Marko Hietala is the bassist singing on this tune. He is phenomenal. Romanticide would be the tune to listen to next from this concert. It's more of them together. Ghost River would also work well. For Marko, We have him singing lead on The Islander at Tampere and Kiss While Your Lips Are Still Red at Wembley. He is one of the few folks around who has had Floor be his backup singer. And yes, none of the songs at Wacken were written for Floor's voice, but she pulled them off perfectly. She had only been with the band for like 8-9 months. But I guess you can do that when you're a Valkyrie.

Another great reaction! There is a softer more pulled back version of this song from Floor's solo concert in Amsterdam in 2021. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHyqk3Z7n951gdU. She opened the concert with it and it is quite beautiful. This was the most difficult song for Floor to sing until their most recent album, Human Nature, came out in 2020. Tuomas (keyboardist and main composer) set out to challenge all three of the band's singers and he definitely did. One of the more difficult but incredibly beautiful songs from that album is Shoemaker. It is a tribute to the planetary scientist Eugene Shoemaker and an ode to human exploration. It has these incredibly difficult vocal lines in the beginning with rapid phrasing and crazy pitch changes and then finishes with an epic operatic chorus that Floor actually worked on in her home studio after they had finished the original recording because she wasn't happy with it. When the album came out Floor said she didn't think they could sing it live but she has performed it in every show on the Human Nature tour that just finished. My favorite performance is the lyric video which has some stunning visuals to go along with the song but the live performance from Hellfest and Deichbrand are also outstanding. Also the acoustic performance of How's the Heart from Planet Rock also shows off some difficult vocals lines in a stripped back performance.

The male singer is Marko Hietala. He was the lead singer in his previous band Tarot and is a member of Finnish male supergroup, Northern Kings, that does metal covers of pop songs (checkout their cover of A-Ha's Take on Me). He also sings lead on a number of Nightwish songs (Endlessness, The Islander, While Your Lips are Still Red, High Hopes) bt his most amazing Nightwish performance is as the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera with their first singer Tarja Turunen. Yes, those F's are challenging, even for the Goddess. She would not normally belt this high in the songs she wrote herself (normally staying at around D-E, with occasional stabs up to F#5 for extra impact), and she doesn't belt like this since abt 2015, using a very heady mixed voice instead. Wise decision, I would say, as this song was meant to be sung entirely in the head voice to begin with. She has exceptional control of her passaggio and can mix and switch between vocal registers with ease. Extremely talented woman.

For a Nightwish song, "Ever Dream" is pretty simple and straightforward. I always take a great pleasure to ear it ! Sure , the larger and more distant the audience is, the more they will be out of time. There were 82k fans here. An older song, from the 2002 4th album , Century Child, with original lead singer Tarja Turunen. And the 1st record with Marko. His name is Marko Hietala, yes he can sing too. Backing and co-lead on a lot of songs,and lead on a few, including The Islander and the cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes. He sang lead in Tarot, his band from before Nightwish. Sure ,keep the fan. lol. The primary reason for Floor's fan is to keep her mascara from running. To hear more of Marko , try Romanticide or Ghost River from here at Wacken with Floor. Or the 2005 Nightwish version(End of an Era DVD) of Phantom of the Opera , with Tarja and Marko on vocals.

As I recall, she said it was challenging, because she had to belt those high notes for such an extended period of time. Of course, she can hit those notes in her sleep, but it's doing them over and over for an extended period of time that becomes a bit challenging (though she makes it look easy, of course). That was an older interview where she said that, though. This has probably been replaced by "Shoemaker" as her most challenging song. In fact, they didn't even think they were going to be able to do it live, but it's become something of a fan favorite, bringing some fans to tears (literally - see Deichbrand 2022).

There is a lot of vocal power by Floor, with or without Nightwish, for me one of her best vocal performances is "Seven days to the Wolves" live at Wembley 2015 (her voice was in an amazing shape that evening) Floor with her previous band Revamp: "Trial of Monsters" live at Graspop 2010 ( the "free" Floor as she founded the band and wrote the music for her own mood and voice)

Nice Reaction! If you want to hear Floor sing a whole song in her head voice only check out the song Stargazer from the Concert in Tampere, Finnland in 2015. It was an early Nightwish song and the original singer sang most songs with her Classical voice so Floor did the same. Another amazing performance from Floor!

"he can sing too..." Ya, that's an understatement. He was the lead singer of his own band that he created with his brother back in 1982 and they were still together even while he was with Nightwish. So, yes.. Marko the bassist and back-up singer here is an actual bonafide and talented singer. There are are few songs where you get to hear a lot more of him and a few where he takes the lead.

9:25 "I don't know why she would say this is one of the hardest songs". Precisely. There may be some linguistic confusion in play here. Already in her After Forever interviews, I've seen her use the English words "challenge" and "challenging", where in Dutch she would've said "uitdaging". In English, challenging may have the connotation that something is hard to do and also that the person facing the challenge may question his/her abilities to face up to it. In Dutch, this association is way less pronounced. A "uitdaging" is something to be looking fwd to as something exciting, since it's not the ordinary stuff. So your observation is spot on: no challenge here as in "hard to do/doubt abt capabilities" but an exciting song for her, since belting at this level for an extended period while trying to preserve some "body" (not make it sound too yellyscreamy) really is special. She could've gone Tarja-style, which would have been a walk in the park for her. Tuomas orders however boiled down to: "none of the operatic stuff, until I decide otherwise". So this was Floor's answer. Pure belting perfection where going into head voice would've been the easy way out. Has to be said tho, that in time sustaining this belting barrage will have an effect on one's vocal chords, even Floor's. Ppl have therefore noticed that from 2015 and onwards, Floor started to protect her voice especially in the über-belting department. Cheers from Amsterdam!

I remember when *the singers brought up that the fact that the vocal melodies and lyrics of the songs are made by a person who can't really sing at all and that adds a special spice* to Nightwish's sound. I often hear in my head exactly how these melodies go, in which voice they are sung and how the lyrics unfold. Then when I present them to the singers, they tell me that you can't sing that way! There are too many syllables, too many "s" letters and so on. Up to a certain limit, I always try to challenge them to at least try." Haha "adds a special spice". You need to be warmed up for this song you said? Well Floor did this song as the very first song in her very first solo concert in AFAS Amsterdam 2021. But maybe she warmed up thoroughly in the dressing room. Although there are some pictures of that too (I think it is called the road to Amsterdam), filmed by her husband Hannes. Marko Hietala (pron: HEE-ah-Tallah) is a classically trained guitarist, bassist, songwriter and talented vocalist both solo and in harmony. He was with Nightwish nearly 20yrs and made beautiful music w all 3 of the female leads, tho particularly enjoyed singing w Floor Jansen bc he could really belt and not overpower her. Though he is no longer w Nightwish, he has a thriving solo career with his original band, Tarot, and his latest project, Pyre of the Black Heart.

You'll love hearing Floor's passagio in "Shoemaker". It's a paean to Eugene Shoemaker, a scientist-astronaut who merited having his ashes sent to the Moon by NASA. (Read up on him before you listen.) Floor found it even more challenging than "Ever Dream", and had to work on it at home after the studio sessions were done ... but of course she nails it in the end. Tuomas is lucky to have her: she lets him write stuff that he might not otherwise attempt.

Any band would be blessed to have Marko as their singer - the fact Nightwish had both him and Floor together for so long kinda feels like cheating! Not only that, but their blend and harmonies are really interesting given how different their styles can be in certain songs. There'll be other people better-qualified than me to suggest examples, but just from Wacken 2013 the next most interesting from a vocal point of view is probably Romanticide (a veeery different song from this one!) with honorable mentions to Song Of Myself and Ghost River. Then of course there's a whole load of stuff from other concerts (including a couple of fan-favorite showstoppers), but I'm sure we'll get onto that in due course... 🙂

As far as i know, the reason Floor named this as one of her most challenging songs, has not as much to do with her range, even if some notes are challenging, even for her. The hard part supposedly is that she has very few breaks to catch her breath, all while the song keeps getting bigger, stronger and more energetic, which she has to match all the way through. Basically, if she was not an "Olympic Athlete vocalist", she would exhausted at the end of the song, so yeah, with that in mind.. it's a very difficult song to sing. And the guy, Marko... yeah he can sing, omg can he sing, he can counter Floor in power and a good chunk of range, they even have a crossover point where their voices are near identical. If you want to check him out as the lead singer, then you have to check out their amazing tribute to Pink Floyd's "High hopes", and yes.. that is a tribute because it is too good to be a cover.

Not sure about what you've reacted to yet, but a stripped down Everdream is in her Amsterdam solo concert, ( also check out "Face Your Demons" from that one ) ..... Also please watch How's the Heart acoustic version for the most stripped down pure Floor you will hear..... probably one of the most difficult melodies I've ever heard sung. And Lastly Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley), and Greatest Show on Earth ( Tampere ) ....... ‼️👍👍

You should try Therion. They started the symphonic/operatic metal craze and are still one of the best in the genre. I would try Adulruna Rediviva live from Budapest or To Mega Therion from Wacken 2007.

As to the singing of Marko, people always suggest Nightwish cower of Pink Floyd's "High hopes", which is great, but maybe you should start with "Endlessness", especially if it is true that this song will not be played live, because it is the song for Marko, and Marko left the band.

Before Nightwish, Marko Hietala had founded the heavy metal band Tarot with his brother in 1985 and became known with them in Finland. Metal wasn't as widespread then as it is now and they couldn't find a trained singer. Instead, he and his brother took over singing until they found a real singer. They never found one. TAROT - Wings Of Darkness (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) In 2001 the first bassist had to leave Nightwish and Marko became his successor. Until 2021 he was considered irreplaceable. When he left the band due to depression, Empuu and Tuomas wanted to quit Nightwish. Floor persuaded her to keep going. When he resigned, he had promised not to make any more music. But music videos with him as a partner were still appearing in 2021. In 2022 he toured in Finland and in 2023 also abroad. We can all hope that he makes a resignation of resignation. Fun fact: Marko writes himself with a K. When he founded Tarot he wanted to be cooler and he wrote himself with a C. Later he thought that was pretty silly and today he writes himself with a K again.

I don't think the difficulty she mentioned was about it being hard skill-wise to hit the notes, but about strain to her vocal chords over time. She needs to do 2.5 hours shows several times a week when on tour, so she has to conserve her voice to make it last the tours.

You should hear Tarja Turunen sing that song. She was Nightwish's original singer, and I think she sings it better than anyone else.
