If I consider a slope dangerously steep, I either go slowly backwards while glancing over my shoulder or cut across at a 45 degree angle.

My Rollator has levers on the rear of the frame which you step on, this acts as a lever to lift the front wheels up. If possible, go for a Rollator with larger front wheels. 8, 10 or even 12 inch front wheels make it far easier to negotiate steps and other obstacles.

I can go down steps with my rollator, as long as the steps have a handrail on at least one side. I grip the handrail and position the rollator at my opposite side. Then I step down to the first step, moving my hand down the handrail, put the opposite foot on the next step (or do "baby steps" if your balance is bad, always stepping down first with the same foot), and drag the rollator behind me. This may not work for you, but it is easy for me.

My new rollator can handle steps, of which I have nine! It weighs 17.4 lbs, which is about as much as I can lift. I fold it side to side so that the woven backrest is a sling for one arm. I hook my arm through it and take firm hold of the frame. My other hand clings to the railing as I progress step by step. Patience is the key. I go backwards down the steps. The SKU is LB-SME-335. I know it as Living Basics, purchased through Shopper Plus in Canada, but no doubt many outlets handle it. It really is ideal for me. I like it for seating in my apartment because the seat is a decent height and the back rest is exactly where I want it.

Because it has wheels, does it slide on the steps when you are going downstairs?
@arabianknights7391
@arabianknights7391 9 ай бұрын
@@m.taylor It does slide. I don't lock it. I alternate between letting the front wheels, then the back wheels, slide. At the same time I am going up or down a step at a time. After a bit of practice, it's quite easy.

@@arabianknights7391Ok Thank you. I am going to try this going backwards down the steps because I am afraid of falling. I will do it slowly. I was using a 4-legged walker opened going down the stairs but it is too cumbersome.
@arabianknights7391
@arabianknights7391 9 ай бұрын
@@m.taylor I would really urge that you have a spotter while first learning this skill. And please have one hand firmly on the railing. My post was about a rollator that has a seat, not about what is called a walker. Does your walker have wheels that lock and a seat? I chose this specific model of rollator because of its light weight and because it folds up from side to side, not back to front. The design lets me carry the beast beside me, not in front of me, as I navigate the steps.
@m.taylor
@m.taylor 9 ай бұрын
@@arabianknights7391 I am using a walker instead of a rollator. My walker has two front wheels and two back rubber feet, and the side frames fold into the front frame. The wheels have no brakes, so I will be sure to try this with a spotter present. If it doesn't work for me, I will probably hang it on my arm, and step down sideways while holding the stair rail with both hands. Thank you for your advice.

Informative video but how do you "conquer" homes with multiple steps. My home has 6 stairs to the front door.
@yourPTguy
@yourPTguy Жыл бұрын
Excellent question - Are you using a rollator or standard front wheeled-walker? Oftentimes rollators are just unsafe to navigate more than one step depending on their height and depth. There are some things that can be done with a standard front wheeled-rolling walker though. Oftentimes in the situation with a rollator, however, often times another individual helps carry the walker up and down while the person using the rollator uses a rail and or two rails or another device when going down and up. I've seen many people just have a walker for upstairs and downstairs as well, if that's possible.

I rear up to go up the stairs. Same as the second option. Coming down there’s a second option. Using your example, go down with the front wheels. Let up allowing room for the human. Back wheels are still on the step above. Grip the brakes! Step and then bring back wheels down. This avoid the back wheels bouncing and jarring the back…really helpful fresh off back surgery. Found this by trial and error.

Hi there, multiple steps are very difficult with a rollator. Oftentimes another helper is needed to help carry the rollator up and down the multiple steps. If you're alone however, and able to have 2 walkers, some people keep one upstairs and one downstairs. If you're using a standard two-wheeled walker however, there are some other strategies to use which I'll be making some new videos on soon. 😊

How about "2 to X" number of steps that are standard 8" rise x 9" tread??? My porch has 4 such steps. Fortunately for me, I have a ramp at another door and I use it instead. But how about places without a ramp? I tried down my steps - ONCE. Holding the railing and ONE HANDLE of the walker, just letting it "do its thing" while I would step with strong leg, new grip on railing . repeat above as necessary. (a video would be good - maybe also without a railing)
