Having '3 legs' is great - l walk faster uphill that most bipedals, because the cane forms a 'balance triangle' and something to dig in and pull on. Walking poles used by make you look like a fit fitness freak, skier, fell walker, olympic walking champ rather than a target. If l'm walking at a dodgy time or place l walk with the metal tipped cane because 'audibly' walking thru an area, signals calm confidence. My friend occasionally uses a long wooden pole that looks very long staff/ bo staff haha

I've had problems with only one leg becoming extremely fatigued after walking a short distance, so I got a cane, and I've learned how to use it properly, and it's the correct height. I have not found it to be very useful after my leg has fatigued. I'll give my thoughts in the next paragraph. Please correct me if I'm wrong: A cane is not a crutch. It's only for minor impairments. Leaning on it only tires you more. Used correctly, in my case, it's a tool to help me (mainly) with my balance, thereby eliminating a lot of micro movements we all make but are unaware of (I'm guessing). This prevents my leg from fatiguing as quickly. (Am I right, so far?) Once my leg becomes fatigued, my cane won't do me any good, and it's time to sit down and rest, which only takes a few minutes. (I've researched A LOT. I suspect I'm developing symptoms of MS. I'm 70 years old.) What did I get right, and what did I get wrong?

5!! Two big reasons. She’s using it correctly, putting her weight into it, and it’s correctly in sync with the weak side. But the biggest clue is it fits her. Canes have to be the proper height.

Several years ago I sprained my left ankle pretty bad and then developed Achilles Bursitis. Was told to use a cane until it healed properly. But was told to keep the cane up against my left foot and support a portion of my weight with my left arm and the cane. It felt natural considering the pain of putting ANY pressure on my foot at all.

I think it definitely depends on why exactly you have the cane and should really only take the advice of your physical therapist. I know others including myself should fully be walking with their cane to replace the problem leg while others use it as a in general mobility aid. The point of using a cane on one leg is to remove the weight/pressure on that leg.

Thank you for an instructive video. I was hit to the pavement by 2 cyclists 4 yrs ago and needed an operation on the right side of my lower back. I can walk about 20 steps on my own and bent only. Too painful to continue. With a roller I can walk for miles, even run, and have a straight back and no pain. Because a roller makes me feel and look too old (in my mind) I prefer to walk with a walking stick. Leaning on the cane I can walk slower and short distances only before I start feeling pain in my lower backside. The biggest problem seems to be the cane, - leaning on it irritates the muscles on my left upper arm, my shoulder, and all the way to my neck. Physiotherapy does not help. Could you please perhaps one day make another video about a problem like this? Thank you and regards from the northern parts of Europe.

It is most likely the neck that is the root of the problem. Please see a neurologist and update us with the findings

I have t-rex arms. I also have cervical and lumbar spine issues. I absolutely do not want to lean forward or bend. I also have drop foot on left side. I don’t use my cane properly, per most videos as far as not having it straight down on my right side. My legs are very weak. Walking is very difficult for me, but if I go to a chair, I think I will never get out of it. It’s a major struggle, but at least I can still move around. I don’t expect to get much better, but I hope to get some physical therapy to increase my strength at some point. I’m 67, I’ll never be a kid again. And the spine issues are a combination of congenital and injuries. 🤷♀️

Same to you, unable to walk by my own . I used rolator all the time even inside the house. I have 2 surgeries and a cervical. My first surgery was fine 9 years no cane and rolator. My balance was fine, still have pain in my lower back I can tolerated it. Now came back, 2nd surgery was bad, unable to hold my balance and walking,. anymore. It’s severe. I’m thinking for another surgery with a different neorosurgeon. Try to use cane if I could handle it. Take care.

Hang in there and don’t give up!!! I have a really bad right knee and my left leg isn’t much better, so I really maybe need two canes… But I don’t see how that would work out for me!! I live in a small house/apartment and I have a walker, but there’s not room enough to use the walker in here… I have to look at his video again and check my height on my cane… I need a cane with the four prongs at the bottom, I think!! Would be so much more stable!! I am absolutely wobbling all over the place, though I haven’t fallen in a very long time, because I’m hyper vigilant, and I say prayers, plus I have a Lifeline That I wear around my neck, so if I fall, Emergency crew will come and help me… So appreciate this fellow/Brother doing this video!! I will say prayers for you also!! Have you found Jesus Christ and the gospel?! He is coming soon!! Love, Sister Gay Michaelis (and brother Michaelis in the spirit world recently) and family…(our daughter-in-law just passed away on Easter Sunday with stage four melanoma at the age of 41!! Setting the cane at wrist height so that a straight arm can be used might theoretically be best but most elderly people I see with a cane at this height still lean forwards bending over the cane. A better compromise might be to set the cane higher. This could mean somewhat less support but improves posture making a fall less likely.

Thank you so very much!!! Well, both my legs are bad!! So I’m kind of confused about this video… I’m going to have to rewatch this several times, and figure this out… Yes, I don’t have the four prongs on the bottom like that one cane… I think that’s the kind of cane. I should get perhaps!! I live in a small apartment/house, and don’t have the room to use a walker… But I am very shaky on the cane… I say lots of prayers and am constantly watching, etc., so I don’t fall!! Plus I have a Lifeline around my neck, so if I do fall, it will contact emergency medical services… But I have not had a fall in a very long time!! Thank you again for this good video… Have you found the gospel of Jesus Christ yet?! He is coming again!!!! ❤🤗😇🙏👍🥰🌎😊

My doctor gave me the same advice. the problem is that it is not helping. I broke my hip and my pelvis when I was 10. I am 53 now and my hip sometimes wants to give out on me. The injury is on my right side and so when I need the support it's on the right side and I use the cane on my right side because when it starts to hurt or want to give out I use the cane for support on that side. It occurs randomly.
