One of the wonderful things about you and these videos is that you bring the joy and " playfulness " back into being with horses. I love this and need to keep it in mind that is all about enjoying ourselves it doesn't matter about things not working out straight away as it's all about the learning process and have g fun together.

Such a wonderful session with long-reining. Keeping relaxed and careful makes this training invaluable as part of overall schooling. Your safety tips were perfect as one wouldn't think of the dangers of long-reining. I really learned a lot watching you work through Mowgley's meandering on the trail and his backing up when he got a bit nervous. Thank you for sharing this teaching tool with us. It would be cool to see at some point your long lining some more advanced movements/lateral work at some stage if possible! 😀 and just more around what groundwork in general that you do with them as they progress through the levels would be super interesting!x

Really interesting video! For a long time I've been considering buying a yearling or a very young horse and taking things really slow until he/she's old enough to ride him, all the while playing and training him/her to not be spooky. I'd really want to have a healthy and safe horse, but I'd miss so much riding I am not sure about it. After watching the video, however, it doesn't seem so bad not being able to ride even for a long while because you can really do a lot of things on foot! It was really helpful and I wish you could do more videos about footwork because in riding lessons they rarely teach any of it (how to take care of them), wich is very unreasonable. Thank you very much!!!

Really lovely series. You are so so patient with him and his progress is wonderful. Would love to see the best way to get the optimum stretch for low/deep/round when riding. I have a short necked draft/tb cross and he needs to stretch out and down as much as possible but I'm not super successful with it. Any advice is appreciated!
@audreye7078
@audreye7078 2 жыл бұрын
You have to give him room to stretch down.. a good forward walk on long rein.. feeling his mouth by the weight of the rein.. you might have to lunge him at walk until he finds that stretch and works over his back.. when he spends more time stretching than head high, then you can mix in trot.. don't overdo it for long times as this can be tiring to the muscles.. your better off splitting the training time over 2x a day for shorter periods.. under saddle if he struggles to stretch you most likely need to stop riding until he gains muscle strength on the lunge. You could try just being a passenger for short periods if you have a good helper who can get the stretch on the lunge too. Just because your horse is big doesn't mean the back muscles are strong enough to carry himself properly..
@theunclepluckers

kzbin.info I found helpful too & goes into detail about how to let the horse stretch long & low using their back in-hand & on lunge
@YourRidingSuccess
@YourRidingSuccess 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shannon, the amount of stretch is individual to each horse as conformationally they are different but the important part it is ensure the horse is connected and taking the bit down and forward when offered. The second thing is to remember the reason we stretch the horses, it is to stretch them across their topline, and the best way is when they are balanced on their 4 feet (think of a cat stretch) this achieves the best stretch over their back. If your horse will not stretch it just means you need more suppleness, check out this video and see how the horse stretches more after the suppleness work kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKG9Zn5mlMuUppY 🤩
@audreye7078
@audreye7078 2 жыл бұрын
@@YourRidingSuccess Should the stretch be as low as necessary to allow the horse to raise the back and allow the hind to track under mid body? Unless the horse has long weak loins,, they should be able to overreach in walk and trot when in rhythm and relaxed with good impulsion.. This should be the prime consideration should it not? I see in some of the videos where the back is not rounding up and the strides are not sufficiently active.

It was fantastic to see you long rein. My girl has been long reined as part of her schooling since she was 16 months old. I agree it is fantastic for them and you as well. I have also used it for loops off the wall etc. One challenge I had was when she went backwards she picked up speed and started to run backwards and it was important not to pull as she nearly flipped over almost in a rear. Do you have any strategies to manage this Nic 😊❤️
@audreye7078
@audreye7078 2 жыл бұрын
Is she spooking and using reverse to try to escape? Perhaps the weight in the reins is a bit too much for her and she gets behind the bit? You could try parachute cord and smaller clips if you think the total weight of the lines is too much for her sensitive mouth.
@nicolewaycott7552
@nicolewaycott7552 2 жыл бұрын
@@audreye7078 Hi Audrey I have used John Chatterton training and she is fantastic. However, she has on occasion run backwards and I have used a one rein stop. However I agree with you maybe my hands were heavy but I didn't have the long reins connected to bit but halter instead so as not to put pressure on her mouth at that time of my training. Nic but thanks for your perspective.
@YourRidingSuccess
@YourRidingSuccess 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nic, yes that is an important point to ensure the horse does not hurt itself. You can using some suppleness to encourage the horse forward but it sounds like maybe the horse needs some more work with accepting the contact, you can do this with the double lunging until the horse is more accepting of the contact xx

So great! I’m going to have a go of this. Thank you so much such a great video. Would you always use a saddle rather than a roller, so you have the stirrups?
@YourRidingSuccess
@YourRidingSuccess 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Zosha! Super question! It is good to use a saddle when working with a younger or less educated horse as it helps to get them used to the tack and get them familiar with the sensation of the stirrups without a rider but if you are working with a more educated horse you can use a roller.
@bethmiller8284

I missed this one when it came out. This is great. I have been wanting to know how to do this for a long time. I have a couple questions: if the horse spooks and starts backing up, he can go much faster than I could, I don't want to accidentally escalate the situation and someone get hurt. Any tips to keep it chill if you are both nervous and a bit confused about what you are doing? Also, what if the horse doesn't naturally want to go forward on his own without someone else (a person or another horse) to follow and give confidence? I feel I have seen some people do this with a driving whip to give a bit of a tap but that's a lot to juggle. Thanks
@YourRidingSuccess
@YourRidingSuccess 2 жыл бұрын
Great questions Beth! It is a good idea to start working on this in a smaller space where the horse is comfortable ie indoor or outdoor arena and get used to it before heading to open. Then remember just like the riding, if you keep the horse supple you can avoid getting stuck and also spooking so try a little yielding or just moving the shoulders in a small way. Hope this helps and as always practice helps!!!

You start in an arena and stay there until he has the basics.. then you should be able to circle him .. assess the horse as he is that day and don't go past his comfort zone until he has settled.
@heatherpike5230
@heatherpike5230 2 жыл бұрын
@@audreye7078 thanks for the reply. I'm more thinking about the unexpected bolt. When you have everything under control then a drone flies over or something totally out of the norm spooks them. I can't see the 'one rein stop' working in this situation because the horse can only turn 45 degrees with you being so far back. Do you drop one rein and go into lounge mode? Then does the other rein gets caught in his legs? It's like knowing where the nearest emergency department is even though you don't plan on going there. Or is that just me who checks every time we plan a holiday 😆
@audreye7078
@audreye7078 2 жыл бұрын
@@heatherpike5230 ah.. turn him with one rein and feed the other line out enough to allow the turn.. if you have been working him on calm work, it is unlikely he'll bolt straight off in a manner you can't turn him.. in essence you then are lunging with 2 reins. If your horse tends to over react, practice transitioning from long lines to double lunging.. practice at walk , then trot. I would practice the transition from long line just after you transition to trot then bring to a walk, then halt.. you will develop muscle memory so that in an emergency you can react faster to bring him under control. Worst case scenario is having the long reins dragging where he can step on them and injure his mouth. If you cannot walk with him and control his big spooks with a long lead, then you need to develop his response to halt and or not pull on you before you get into situations where must have that control.

As mentioned below, start with basics in lunging and in arena and it is unlikely the horse would bolt as he respects the aids you are giving him, just like in riding ✨

I have a question about halt under saddle. It takes me too many strides to halt when I ask my horse. How do I improve on that?
@audreye7078
@audreye7078 2 жыл бұрын
Do your halts in the corner.. or when you are coming across the arena to the fence. Most of all, don't pull.. set your hand and sit .. stop your seat's activity.. relax the leg so you are not sending mixed messages. If he does not halt in hand when you stop walking, you need to fix that too. They kind of go together... I presume you are only asking from a walk.. until a halt at walk is correct, don't try at trot.. halt from canter is a higher level skill. Until you can transition between working and collected gait, you won't get really clean no extra step halts.

@@audreye7078 thanks, good advice but I work in an open outdoor arena so no wall or fence. My mare is not difficult to halt. Walk to halt is fine. When I get her connected and trotting nicely it takes a stride or two before we actually get the halt. Looking for tips to improve getting a prompt halt.

@@redmare1746 Then use anticipation to your advantage.. until she is actually working well under herself, one or 2 steps is about all she can do. If she understands half halt, use the half halt to prepare her to halt, then ask for the halt. While you don't pull back, you also don't release the hand until she halts. Does she seem to use her front legs to halt? Or do you feel her hind come under during the half halt? If the former, work on shifting her weight back just before the halt.. this is where the half halt is so important. You're not pulling back, but you should squeeze the rein with a hint more tension as you sit with your seat pushing the hind to the hand. Depending on what you've taught her about the seat versus the legs, you might also slightly close the legs. The half halt is applied during suspension and released before the feet land. Otherwise you're cueing for halt. Does she root at the bit during the halt? She might be bracing for support if she does.. Alicia would have more suggestions to help with that. What I would do is one step reinback immediately after halt, then go forward. Once she starts to anticipate the reinback, you'll probably she she stops rooting and is better balanced. That's also a sign to change up the sequence so she stops anticipating and waits for you to give the next aid.

Hi there! Work gradually on your halts, one of the reasons horses often take more strides to halt is if their balance is not upright and even and also if the horse is not responsive to you changing the tempo of the trot to smaller steps. Remember to always set your horses tempo, not just when you want something from him, then he is always reacting from your seat ✨

Hi Sally! With long reining- safety need to be first. Sometimes obviously things do happen when working with horses, but if you have any doubts in your mind about how your horse might behave when long reining start in a safe environment i.e. in an indoor. The other thing to note is that some horses just don't enjoy long-reining. If you do think everything is fine and do encounter an issue, biggest thing is to think of safety and calm the horse down as soon as possible. And it is the same as riding, often when you are moving you are safer than when you arent moving and can relax the horse by moving the shoulders. x

Can I please ask how you teach them to go forward when you're behind them? My horse double lunges fine, but if you are behind him to long rein he gets concerned and confused and doesn't want to walk forward away from you. You can kind of get about level with his flank on long lining before he nopes out of the exercise and won't go forward or wants to turn and face you. He's not being naughty, he just isn't sure what to do. He understands verbal cues for walk/trot but this doesn't work well on long reining for him and the last thing I want to do is carry something like a lunge whip when I'm right behind him. (He doesn't need whips as he's quite sensitive to voice and leg so I don't use them. He's desensitised to whips now, as he hated them when I go him. You can swing them around/ brush him all over with them without any worry, but if you pick one up with the intent of asking him to move on the lunge, he'll move off very snappily, but gets stressy about it. Just seems like tempting fate unnecessarily to ask him to move off with one when directly behind him when he's already worried I reckon.) I haven't been able to ride for a long time, so it'd be great to be able to add long lining :)

Hi Jaci, super question, the first thing to think about with long reining is there are some horses that are just never comfortable with long reining, this can be young or older and trained horses, some horses are just never okay about it. This could be the case with your horse and if this is the case it is better to not try it and stick with lunging or riding. Even the best professionals in the world don't always long rein every horse! In a perfect world the horse should move off forwards from a little rattle on his sides with the long lines ✨

@@YourRidingSuccess Ok thanks for the reply. Had a big fall before covid started up and was out of action for a long time due to injury. Can't get any riding retraining done until covid restrictions go away (Australia- still under travel restrictions so I can't get anyone in or take him out to help me. Maybe next year) and not brave enough to get on a green horse that hasn't been ridden for so long when I'm also so out of practice, so have been trying to do as much training from the ground as possible. Might have to leave the long lining though from the sounds of it even though it looks like a great tool. Have never had one that objected to much to it before! I thought maybe I had missed a step when trying to teach it from scratch. Thanks again for the response, appreciate it :)

with respect if he is an OTTB he would be well used to "out of the stable and off we go" . I am wondering if he was in training for any length of time and actually raced, or if it was discovered very early on that he was useless as a racer. I had one of these and although hot he was not as quirky as one of my successful ones who can on occasion tell himself that anything going quicker than him (runners, cyclists) should; out of respect be raced !!
