Different versions of the myth exist. In another, Athena wins the competition. In yet another, Arachne's weaving is a mockery to the gods, showing their most embarrassing moments.

no it doesn't, there are no greek myths associated with arachne and Athena first of all. 2nd, only 3-4 roman versions exist about arachne & Minerva. while in all those version only one version from Ovid gives the full tale, will the rest only mention Minerva hated spiders, no story or why the hate. In Ovid's version he says Minerva lost to arachne and enraged destroyed her tapesry. Also in the video, Minerva wasn't the one to challenge arachne, arachne challenges Minerva.

Ovid is the first written source. However, most mythological stories he's written are just his version of much older tales from the spoken tradition. Medusa being a rape victim is one of them. In this case, it suffices to say that Arachne still means spider, even in modern Greek.

@@depicurian1 yeah and it's only an assumption, no written version detailing existed before ovid. We have no way to know if arachne existed outside of rome, many stories he wrote he just picked from other greek and roman writers with his own spin on it Like making Athena and Hera appear nude before Paris which didn't happen anywhere else. while many stories he invented as it seems because no other source except him was found. Like that's the case with arachne. You can only allege someone may have written a arachne/minerva/athena story or it was part of an oral tradition. But we have no way to prove it. Besides, the main important thing it's known that arachne/athena story had no origin from greece as nobody found any artwork depicting it. If there was any artwork depicting it, it would have been possible oral traditions regarding it did exist. But it doesn't so you don't have enough evidence to allege it was an oral tradition. and speaking of medusa being a victim, again we don't know if it was a part of oral traditions or not, nobody found any artwork depicting it. Besides that, even in Ovid's medusa tale, she isn't a victim, they have mis represented the story for years and years, Ovid says she deserved the punishment and it was most likely a consensual relationship based on what he has written about Minerva in his other myths. the various versions of arachne losing the competition against Athena is nothing but modern retellings of the myth with no ancient source to support it. I can create a interpretation of the story, popularize it enough and it will become a version. Is it credible? No, absolutely not.

In EVERY source I've found, Arachne is mentioned as deriving from Greek myths. Please, find at least one decent source that claims otherwise or stop the effort to culturally appropriate what does not belong to you.

@@depicurian1 what are you talking about lol, you stop doing the cultural appropriation, you are expected to provide any legitimate souce that it originated from Greece, you won't find any Greek origin, all the writers talking about her are from Rome. No even a single Greek writer has talked about it, and NO artwork either. come up with a legitimate source yourself, names hardly do anything.

Q different version is when Athena actually felt bad for the girls death that she transformed her body into a spider and gave her the ability to weave webs so she can still do what she loves as a spider

Arachne fate was sealed when she bragged she was better then Athena...the Gods took offense at such boosting by mortals and their punishments were always terrible.

Yep, that was weaved in her tapestry, various warnings not to spite the gods. But Arachne did not listen.

That was possibly the point of this story. Ovid hated the gods and thus presented them as evil.

Athene gave her multiple chances to apologize for bragging. She admitted the girl was a magnificent weaver. She took offense at the subject of the girl's tapestry. She took pity on the girl by allowing her a form that allowed her to continue her weaving, without the offensive content.

Ever cared to distinguish whether the myth is from romans or greek? why not use the roman names of the gods? There is no arachne in any greek mythology writing, every source about arachne is from Rome.
@depicurian1
@depicurian1 8 ай бұрын
It's ok, we do not take offence in the Romans using our ancient gods to make up their own. Cultural appropriation was not a thing back then. We just saw it as a step further in the spreading of our culture.

@@depicurian1 Its not about taking offense, I do care about people staying true to sources, because people created thei own interpretations, versions, and label them as "Greek mythology" and put out a video on the internet creating confusion and spreading incorrect information. That's why I only recommend videos from people like Jake doubleyoo or OSP which mention sources.

Quick and easy search displays that she was a Greek woman who had talent for sewing. She bragged about being better than Athena and they later had a competition. That's where the story breaks off from tales of her winning and Athena, being jealous, killed her and brought her back as a creature that spins an infinite number of treats or "webs" since spider.

@@Violet_Storm76 if you would have done a quick and easy search you would have found this video as well. Quick and easy search is always spread with misinformation in case of mythology. Go and actually look where the writers were from who wrote about the story and there was no arachne in any Greek literature by any Greek writer. All sources are from roman writers. Ever seen the difference that Mars and Minerva were probably married and that Mars fell in love with Minvera in roman literature? In Greek literature Ares and Athena never liked each other.
