From sailors who were turned into pigs, nymphs that sprouted into trees, and a gaze that converted the beholder to stone, Greek mythology brims with shape-shifters. The powerful Gods usually changed their own forms at will - but for mortals, the mutations were often unwanted. Iseult Gillespie shares how one such unnerving transformation befell the spinner Arachne.
Lesson by Iseult Gillespie, animation by Mette Ilene Holmriis.

There are more adaptations of the story, I believe this is a more negative one if existing at all, a common adaptation is Athena teaching Arachne how to spin, then her boasting of her self taught talents, to which Athena turns her into a spider. Also anybody else weirded out by the name Pluto instead of Hades? If I remember correctly Pluto is Roman.

According to one version, Arachne tried to kill herself when Athena raged and the latter was ashamed at how she behaved that she decided to turn Arachne into a spider with, "No more will you weave on the loom, instead you'll continue your weaving in the air."

In the version of this myth I read, Arachne actually won the competition, but was so ashamed by Athena calling her out. So she killed herself, but Athena brought her back as the first spider. The myth said that Athena wasn't angry at Arachne for winning the competition, it was because of her ego.

This retelling is beautiful, but quick side note: This version of the myth is filtered through the Roman poet Ovid who held a grudge against the Greek and so painted Athena in an unflattering, cruel light. In the original Greek myth, Zeus punishes Arachne for her hubris and so she committed suicide but Athena took pity on her and so resurrected her as the first spider so she could weave for eternity and her children too.

To understand these myths, it helps to realize that the various characters all represent elements of the mind. Arachne represents consciousness being caught up in the right half of the brain, as she's obsessed with her own creative power and beauty. The right half of the brain is the 'feminine' side of consciousness, which is why Arachne is female. Arachne's error isn't really an error in any absolute sense. Arachne is basically Eve, who actually *becomes/is* Athena (Goddess) by persevering and spinning a web of understanding until she awakens to her own inner wisdom. From the relative perspective of time, that seems nonsensical, but from the perspective beyond time and individuality (the Alpha and Omega) it makes perfect sense.

@@maitri6087 If we look at it through Athena's eyes (the eyes of Wisdom), it makes perfect sense. Arachne and Athena represent unconscious wisdom and conscious wisdom (being asleep and being enlightened). For Arachne to become Athena, she must start out as a little spider and weave a web of understanding.

Beautifully animated and narrated as always 🥰 But be careful with mixing up Roman and Greek gods: e.g. Athena, Zeus, Poseidon, Persephone are all Greek versions of the deities, but Bacchus and Pluto are the Latinised versions. Instead the names should be Dionysos and Hades if you'd want to be consistent.
@bsuvo
@bsuvo 8 ай бұрын
It may be because its from ovids retelling of the myth who was a roman writer, who had beef with greek culture. So that may be why there was a mix of the roman and greek names, since the author was roman and wrote about greek mythology. But it has been ages since I read the metamorphises from ovid and cant say for sure if ovid himself mixed up the names, or if he was consistent.

I think it's more intelligence then wisdom. When she wants her way she is cunning and smart. She's also a war goddess the tend to have tempers. XD still One version of the story arachna hanged herself I forget the reason. Athena felt bad so she brought her back to life but she was still a bit mad about the whole thing about disrespecting most of the gods in her tapestry. So she brought her back with a curse

There are many different translations, this one just being one of the most famous. One is that Athena said she would kill Arachne if she failed. It was obvious that Athena had won and Arachne was devastated, so Athena took pity on her and turned her into a spider so that she could do what she loved most for the rest of her life. Others show Athena with a short temper and turning obviously better arachne into a spider, while some say that Arachne's art was bad and insulting and was because of a bitterness she harbored and Athena punished her for her impudence.

Trish Chanyeol Park Remember this is back when humans who had power were equally as cruel and capricious as the God’s they created. (Not that that has changed, we just don’t usually use the God excuse for our behaviors as much now) Humans may not have been the god’s slaves, but a LARGE number were other humans slaves. One of the reasons they are so “ultimate” in their judgment was a way to cope with the hard realities of the time they lived in, a great equalizer to remind all humans that they weren’t in control and a warning to any humans who begin to feel “better than” others. I mean, the moral of this story was don’t be egotistical and stay humble. A parable meant to show you how to never over estimate your abilities, a valuable life lesson much better learnt at the misfortune of a fictitious character than to be put to death, dismembered, or any other various forms of wicked punishments used.

thats very simplistic, I've heard that, Athena didn't reaveled herself before Arachne bragged about her skills, and Athena out of rage showed her true form to yell at Arachne but regreded it. Athena filled with guilt, return to Arachne only to find that she commit suicide and hung herself. athena finally turned Arachne tino a spider to respect her choice of hanging herself but also to let her wove in eternity. she wasn't salty she losed herself in her prime youngness

This version of the myth is actually not the original, its the one written by Ovid, a Roman poet who heavily critiqued the Greek Gods. Arachne in this poem is essentially his mouthpiece, a re-writing of the original myth. The original Greek version (or one of the original Greek variants, at least) is a version where Athena turns Arachne into a spider out of pity after she loses a bet that says she can never weave again. As a spider she can now spin web, so she can continue to weave forever. While I also like the Ovid version, as it's a really interesting criticism of the mythology (As bias as it may be) think a little critically about what the story is saying here, this would be considered blasphemous in Hellenism. The Original version is one that casts the Gods in a more favorable light overall. Though Greek mythos is still full of flawed Gods and heroes, no matter their crimes they're considered divine, this is kind of what Ovid's version was critiquing to begin with by depicting their true nature (in the context of the poem) as hedonists and abusers of their authority. Personally I think it's a more interesting story from that angle, because that context gives it extra depth. But presenting it as the original myth is not only disingenuous to the original mythology, it actively takes away a lot of that important context that really gives it it's teeth. Not that I think this video is terrible or anything, it does a great job presenting the story, but it also happened to miss quite a lot of important parts of it!

It's not the spiders' fault that they are creepy! For the most part they are more scared of us.

Spiders are dope. Plus they eat insects, and insects carry diseases. And they can have pet frogs if their a certain species.

To be honest, Athena doesn't deserve to be a goddess. She turned Arachne into a spider and turned Medusa into a beast. She is so salty.

There’s also another version where Athena spoke politely(in a disguise) to Arachne but Arachne was talking about how the goddess Athena could hardly do anything half as fine as hers. Athena got agitated and did the weave off thing. Arachne also did all those same things in the weave off from this vid. Athena admitted that there was no flaw in Arachne’s weaving but the things she portrayed angered her so she tore up the weave. Then she threw the loom at arachne’s head bc she couldn’t control her rage. (Here’s where it differs) arachne realised she messed up big time and grabbed some string of smth and hung herself in a nearby tree. Athena low key cried and decided Arachne’s talent won’t ever die and transformed her into a spider to keep her talent alive. Idk this might not be accurate but it’s another version where Athena isn’t being a jealous goddess lmaoo

The version I read had that Athena disguised as a old lady and told arachne politely a few times that her talent over loom is gods-given but Arachne refused . Athena revealed herself , a competion , Athena praising gods in her tapestry and arachne insulting the gods ( like in the video ), after that Athena decided it was a tie but made Arachne a half -spider 'cause Arachne was arrogant. Yes , the percy jackson version
