For a complete lesson on customary unit conversions, go to www.MathHelp.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn the following customary units of measurement: inch, foot, ounce, ton, fluid ounce, pint, gallon, yard, pound, cup, quart, and so on. Students also learn to convert from one customary unit of measurement to another using the following conversion factors: 60 seconds = 1 minute, 7 days = 1 week, 3 feet = 1 yard, 16 ounces = 1 pound, 4 quarts = 1 gallon, and so on. Students are then asked to solve problems using conversion factors, such as 18 feet = ____ inches.

I know this is a little late for you, but I first think you would have to convert the 325 miles into feet (1 mile = 5280 feet). 325 miles x 5280 feet = 1,716,000 (or if you wrote that in scientific notation, it would be 1.72 x 10^6). You'd then need to convert the hours in minutes, then into seconds (1 hour = 60 minues... 6.5 hours x 60 minutes =390 minutes, then 1 minute = 60 seconds ... 390 x 60 = 23400, or 2.34 x 10^4. You'd then have the numbers in the correct position.

You would need to know that solving for something smaller, you would multiply, and solving for something bigger, you would divide. If 1 T = 2000 lbs, then 5000 T x 2000 lbs = 10000000 lbs.. Or in scientific notation, it would be 1.00 x 10^7. Think if you had 2 T. Then 2000 lbs x 2 T = 4000 lbs. This would be a valid statement, because two tons = 2000 pounds x 2 = 4000 pounds, or lbs.

If you go from a larger number to a smaller number, yes, you would divide. However, she's talking about units, which is different. If you are converting a larger unit to a smaller unit (like feet to inches), you multiply because there's more of that smaller unit needed to cover the same distance/mass/volume as that larger unit. Converting one pound to ounces, for example, is going from a larger unit (pound) to a smaller unit (ounces). There are 16 oz in a lb, so you multiply 1 x 16.
