ARM Pitching Development

Күн бұрын

Tutorial on baseball pitching mechanics for young pitchers. This how to pitching mechanics for beginning pitchers video by former college pitching coach and current ARM coach Jason Beeding is perfect for pitching athletes ages 9 - 14, or anyone just starting out.
Try to keep things as simple as possible when first starting to learn pitching. Having an open mind and a willingness to try new things is a must for pitchers to reach new barriers.
Pitchers that have a solid foundation and understanding of their mechanics need not move past this point. However, if you don’t, we have included a formal presentation for a foundation to work by.
I’ve always said try to make the uncomfortable feel comfortable. Remember if you are trying to make mechanical adjustments you won’t necessarily get the adjustment on your first try.
Keep working and over time it will happen. Good athletes make positive adjustment to become better and get good at their sport. Great athletes make positive, technical adjustments that last their career.
Each pitcher is unique and should have something positive to build on such as mechanics, mental approach, velocity, movement or control.

Really appreciate this. I'm playing with the 11-12 yr olds, and their inital undoing is stalling or over-exaggerating the beginning of the motion (almost looks like they go into slo-mo), which results in their center of gravity being on their back leg at their release. You totally nailed it.

No trying to disrespect at all. I love the game of baseball but who is your target audience for this video(parents or the 10 yr old)? there were some baseball language examples said that a 10y/o might not understand. when I was at the foundation stage of teach my son, I showed him how to release the ball first like throwing a dart, elbow over shoulder and snap the wrist to increase the ball rotarion. then progressively went through the mechanics. great video and keep the videos coming.

@@backoff3477 This is a good point. I definitely think it’s more for the parents/coaches. I will say it’s good to keep them from bad habits in their setup and lower body as you do reps. I’ve run into this problem with other mechanics.

I haven’t really looked back into the simple side of pitching since I was this age. At these ages it’s really hard for these kids to get good hip shoulder separation and drive. I think your approach to arm position and direction is done well. A lot of kids are told to go into a balance point which becomes an obstacle when they actually start learning to pitch by 14+. Good,simple approach to beginners. Well done.

Great stuff! I agree with keeping things simple at this age as they can focus on mechanics of take off and just throwing a strike!....only thing I like to do a bit different, is having the ball out of your break and rotated up and in ready position to be thrown, right when the front foot has landed. I feel like this takes alot of strain off their arm as the momentum is being carried at this time. I noticed how you are out of the break but still haven't rotated the shoulder and the ball up until after your foot has landed.

Hey Jason. Love the videos! Hard to find a lot of great instructional videos with arm care/protection at the forefront. I’ve coached baseball for years and recently decided to start a 11U travel ball team. I’ve learned quick that I have to completely reset my guys back to the basics from all the bad info they’ve got previously. Hard to get them to understand, it’s not always about winning rings/trophies at 11, but about developing a really solid foundation that will help them in the future. I use your videos to re-iterate my point so much appreciated. My question is do you have any good videos for solid pick off drills? I have a couple I use but wanted to see if you had anything available. Didn’t see anything on the page but I may have missed it.

Great vid..The only thing I would add is to make sure after separation that the Thumb on the pitching hand is facing downward. A lot of kids have no instruction in that regard and are holding the ball with her thumb facing towards the sky. This dramatically affects the torque and load of a pitch..Keep at it an thanks for sharing.

This is a great video. I pitched in college 20 years ago, and have an 8 year old lefty that is getting ready to move up to Minors next spring, and very much wants to pitch. What differs significantly from what we were taught then is the low hand position after your hand break in the "power T" position. We were taught back then to get your hand up at head level or above and throw downhill from there. But all the modern teaching seems to show a lower, shoulder-level hand position before throwing. I'm looking at a list of videos on youtube from other instructors, and every one shows the position you showed. What is the reason for this vs. how we were taught back in the day? I would think this position would promote more strain on the shoulder/elbow and create trouble getting on top to get the ball down in the zone.
@ARMPitchingDevelopment
@ARMPitchingDevelopment 3 жыл бұрын
Great comment. The difference is in the how fast the arm spirals up (circle) and loading the arm using shoulder and back muscles in a more efficient manner than "Power T". Today we see a lot less rotator cuff injury I believe in part because of this technique. However the down side is you see a lot more elbow injury due to increased velocity. My take is that velocity has been the new standard over pitch ability and durability. Here is my thing. I don't get too wrapped up on arm slot as long at appropriate timing of movements is being met, especially at younger ages. For younger guys the "W" position will usually promote staying on top of the ball and pitching down hill. Everyone is a little different and this is just my take on the matter. Hope it helps y'all at some level. Thank you :)

Is it a good idea to keep eyes staring at target area? Instead of being distracted? I really liked the comment about keeping head still as possible to avoid erratic pitches. The difficult part of the video is that it’s pretty choppy because it’s a lot of stop and go. But overall very useful. Thank you

Thanks for watching. My later videos are much more consumer friendly. This was an early video in my YT journey. Yes, I preach stay connected to your target when you are ready to commit the pitch. I don't like guys looking at the ground, start, then try to pick up the target. My personal coaching philosophy. Thanks

@@ARMPitchingDevelopment the reason I even asked was I was watching little league baseball World Series and the camera man tends to show different angles than I’m accustomed to seeing and the coaches have live microphones. It’s really a breath of fresh air since professional sports are so political and we all need an escape route sometimes. And the kids are really good. Not as polished as pros but the technique is good. My adopted grandson is starting to play and likes pitching but his movements are so jerky it would make you cringe. So he’ll be watching your video today. Bill

What grip do you recommend for kids hands. I’ve been teaching my 9yo to just do a simple 4 seam grip just to get him thinking about it. I know it doesn’t really matter at that age but I was wondering if you had any thoughts?

Hey I’m 13, 14 in April and I’m throwing 68-70 from 60,6 but this upcoming weekend will be my third time throwing from 60,6 and my bicep always seems to hurt I want to say it’s because I didn’t really throw like I should’ve for almost 2 years because of covid and I can’t go for longer than 2 innings without my arm starting to hurt is it just because I’m not used to pitching from 60,6 or what’s going on?

I’m coaching a 15u team, who are mostly 14, and it’s such a pain to not be able to express properly what I’m trying to say because I’m so used to more advanced philosophies. Any tips on what to do when your team practices ridiculously well, but loses it in game?
@ARMPitchingDevelopment
@ARMPitchingDevelopment Жыл бұрын
Yeah closing games can be difficult as long as you're winning or losing within a small margin you're playing at the right level the more the guys play together the better they'll get at closing the game out and the winds will start piling up if the talent is there as well. Just try to be patient with him and keep encouraging them.

Idk bruh I started pitching for the hell of it so I never been taught but I taught my self to throw a curveball 2 seam and the 4 seam but according to an app I only clock out at 40 mph😂 it measures 60 feet but the mound is only 45 feet so idk if it’s cause of that or I just have poor mechanics😂😂 I’m 23 and work construction swinging away a sledge hammer so I just don’t make sense to me lol
