Exactly. The person who was like “not all brands need to cater to everyone.” Oh great coming from the person who probably is able to find a serviceable foundation color match in every brand. It’s easy to say representation isn’t important when you’re represented everywhere. Like a person who eats 3 square meals a day telling someone who is lucky to get one, “it’s just food.” I also was thinking about how insulting it is that some people truly see no intrinsic value in diversity. They see a room full of mixed races, genders, whatever and say “no one would want to be in that room-unless they were trying to profit off it.” Which is why they love to throw the idea of tokenism around anytime a POC person is at the forefront of anything. In this case tho, this is actually tokenism and its digusting

I really love how people will defend segregation and racism to their last breath. A brand that promises to be inclusive should deliver on the promise, ethically and properly. They’ve outed their true company values of racism. They said black people = black face paint (the same logic as blackface) and then DOUBLED DOWN. I actually don’t care when brands aren’t inclusive, I’m used to not being able to find my shade. But don’t say you’ll be inclusive, make a shade for no one and then lie and double down. They think we’re dumb, they think we’re less than, they think we’re not human.

I can understand the concept that Korean brands operating in only South Korea don't need to cater to all shade ranges. But not when they're expanding to an international market. If your argument is people shouldn't cater to a skin tone that isn't dominant where they're selling, that falls flat when you're selling in the Western world.

This is why I appreciate brands like tirtir are making a great effort to expand their shade range quickly AND effectively as they grow in the western world.

It’s important to note though that there are people with darker skin tones in Korea. I live here and there’s a pretty substantial SEAsian community who have darker skin, as well as a growing Black community. Even so, the foundations don’t even cover the skin tones of many ethnic Koreans. It’s not true that Koreans all have pale skin, especially in rural areas, it’s just that paleness is associated with beauty and wealth. Colourism is a real issue here in Korea and the beauty industry perpetuates it.

The model, the swatches, and the bottle were all shown to be dark, but when influencers got them they we're WAY lighter. Not just a few shades. 12:15 THIS!!! literally I was going to comment this but robert beat me to it lol. inclusive doesn't mean you need EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE shade; it just means that you shouldn't release a range that is 90% for white/light-skinned people, you can be inclusive with a variety of shade and tone options without investing a huge amount and making 100 shades, the difference is just to make sure that every step between the shades is equal so you end up with a wider range of products for different skintones. I'm not going to speak for POC, but as a very pale girlie with cool undertones, it's difficult to find smth that doesn't look too orange or yellow on me, but I'd much prefer to have a slightly darker option with correct undertones than for every single paler foundation to be orange or yellow on my skin and I think it's likely folks with darker skintones would also prefer to adjust their highlight or concealer to work with a shade that's maybe slightly lighter/darker than their actual skintone but has the correct undertones, rather than be thrown a shade range that's completely outside of anything they'd be able to use. tldr; no excuses for not making an inclusive shade range in 2024, at this point, y'all just pretending you care about diversity if you aren't actively making the effort to cater to the widest possible range of skintones. fr if it's really a small business and money is tight, maybe just release a formula that can be stretched easier across skintones, smth like a cc cream or tinted moisturizer that has a sheerer coverage so it'll blend easier into slightly varied skintones.

If you as a brand come out with a line and it comes with a range of tones from light to dark then you have from the beginning admitted to catering to ALL skin tones. Anyone whining that they don't need to cater to all tones is a part of the problem. They already DID from the start so there's no defending that when they drop the ball. If you don't want to cater to all skin tones then whatever I guess, but if that's how you feel then why are you releasing a skin tone range in the first place?
