What's worse is that they just select the same five ads to show you over and over again, and it's rarely ever for something you actually want. You just get sick of hearing the same ads over and over again. Now you can't actually watch a video for more than 2 minutes without an ad interrupting it, and it's a nightmare during long videos. Even worse is the fact you can get ads longer than the video you want to watch, e.g. a 40 second ad for a 3 second video. I tried an ad blocker in the hopes that it would improve the situation, but then youtube got petty and told me I just flat out couldn't watch any videos whatsoever until is disabled the blocker.

His conclusion was, if you donate $1 over the period of 5 years or so, you have already given the creator much more money, than what the creator would have earned by you watching and interacting with every single ad, on every single video over those 5 years. So if you feel guilty of using ad blocker, as you are taking away money from your favorite youtubers, just give a $1 donation every year or so, and that would be much much more beneficial to that creator than watching ads to support him. The worst example of KZbin ads was a video uploaded today by ‘Kazoneart’. It was a video of a manager mourning the loss of his friend and colleague. The video was roughly 14min long and it was just a man, with a camera talking about how the death of Kim Jung Gi; How it happened, the funeral arrangements because Gi died abroad, how the company will commemorate Gi. During the video, Hyun Jin Kim the manager of ‘Kazone’ breaks down while talking about Gi. KZbin thought the best thing to do was to put an ad break of unskippable ads after Kim breaks down crying and turns the camera off before he resumes. When I shut the video down to watch it again there were THREE UNSKIPPABLE AD BREAKS in the video. So, here’s my non-ad blocker way of getting rid of the ads when they show up but it works 95% of the time. When an ad plays there’s a small ‘i’ in the bottom left corner of the video, click that then ‘Stop seeing this ad’. It’ll cancel the ad block even if you don’t give a reason. This is me giving you the finger KZbin. Putting ads on a broken man grieving for his friend.
@mossnodachi3502 жыл бұрын
I was genuinely just thinking of this when I clicked the video. The fact that youtube has an entire algorithm for divvying up ads and their content and somehow slapping it onto someone being honest and open about a really tragic (and lets be honest, traumatic in regards to how Kim jung gi passed suddenly abroad) event. There is NO Reason there should be ads on that at all, let alone unskippable. Not only is it a pain in the ass to viewers, but it makes it impossible to talk about anything of value without (in this case) a grieving man being interrupted by idk, a cheery youtube shorts or hobby lobby christmas ad

I remember I saw my best friend's grandmother trying to watch Vietnamese cooking/tourism videos through the KZbin app through a Roku TV. Even though it was technically through my best friends account, the algorithm was able to figure out that it was a different person watching because her grandmother didn't fully understand the UI and remote and wouldn't skip ads. The end result was KZbin pumping multiple actual 50 minute ads at her for shady medicine.

This is really the crux of why I hate ads so much. Lets do the math here: Call it 3000 views on a video for a dollar. Call it 3.33 ads on a video to be super conservative and make math easy. That makes for 10 000 ads per dollar. 15 seconds per ad is 150 000 seconds per dollar going to the creator. But lets say only a third of views aren't using a blocker so it's 50 000 seconds per dollar. Or in other words, the creator gets 7 cents for every hour you spend watching ads. So watching an ad is like being paid 70 cents an hour to do a job you didn't ask for so ~20% of that money can go to people who deserve it and 80% goes to whichever megacorp is running it in the form of you buying crap you shouldn't. Or to put it another way, if I gave someone a dollar on Patreon, that's gives them more money than me watching 2000 videos without an ad blocker. But youtube wants 12$ a month to be ad free, as though I'm going to watch hundreds or thousands of videos each day. Completely crooked.

@joshuabacker2363 Жыл бұрын
That's just power dynamics. Content creators depend on youtube. KZbin needs content creators, yes, but youtube is a singularly organized entity, while content creators are basically a vast mob of individuals. Even if some of the content creators won't abide by KZbin's monolithic standards, they ultimately can't effect any serious change, especially since they are individually weak. The top 10 most-viewed KZbin channels have a combined view count of just over 1.1 Trillion views. KZbin gets that many views in total every year, nearly. All of those channels could vanish with their viewers never deciding to replace them, and KZbin probably wouldn't even notice the metric difference for years. Furthermore, only the top 9 channels actually have more TOTAL VIEWS than KZbin's MONTHLY view count. There's literally nine channels out of tens of thousands of active, partnered, actually-relevant channels that could even put a visible dent in KZbins metrics on their own. And of course, none of these channels ever would get involved in stuff like this. To even further elaborate the difference, Pewdiepie only has a total view count of 28 billion. KZbin gets nearly 3x his total views per *month*. Three separate pewdiepies would have to leave youtube entirely to set them back just a month in views. For the vast majority of channels, it's even worse. Grant's channel only has a total of 33 Million views. He would need to find over 200 youtubers of a similar size to get a total view count equivalent to a month of youtube's views. And if he wanted to actually leave the platform and lower youtube's monthly views, he would need to find nearly 1000 other channels of a similar size to cause any measurable impact on KZbin's metrics. And this is all heavily skewed information, because in reality, if Grant's channel disappeared tomorrow, most of his viewers wouldn't stop viewing videos, they'd just turn their attention to other videos or channels. KZbin has *all* the power in this relationship, and the only ones they really need to appease are advertisers and sponsors. Content creators and even viewers are just too small and too divisive to be a threat to them.

I predicted this years ago, it started with a single picture, then 3 seconds, then 5, and I quickly realised they would keep pushing it and never stop. Now you can get 2 15sec ads in a row and probably several times for one video. It's gonna keep going.
@moodlethenoodle2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I noticed how they recently switched from one unskippable 15-second ad and 1 skippable one to 2 unskippable 15-second ads.

they're also far more intrusive now on mobile(at least), opening a tab(?) that closes comments and takes up the entire screen when you aren't watching the video in full screen mode.

I still can't believe that they briefly tried to make it so skipping the first of two ads STILL made you watch the 2nd one. I mean, it's bad enough that they moved to the two ad system to begin with, but at least it was tolerable since if the first one was skippable it skipped both.

My favorite thing is when KZbin saves my place at the end of a video I watched. So I click, get an ad. Then manually go back to the beginning, and get another ad.
@SanchoPanza-wg5xf5 ай бұрын
I sympathize. You can append &t=1 to the end of any URL to skip ahead, where 1 is an integer that specifies the offset in seconds. Or you can use open-source software that allows you to control your own device, instead of defaulting to whatever the manufacturer provides.

The really egregious thing to me is the fact that KZbin doesn’t give creators the option of having mid-rolls or not. They have the audacity to force mid-rolls and take the revenue as well. This is actually driving many users away from creators. It gives the impression that the creator “sold out” even when actively trying to limit ads on their own videos.
