Here's a funny one ! Twenty odd years ago I went for a lesson and the young pro said this is what Tiger Woods does , I gently reminded him that I was 40 years old and would be impossible to copy Tigers swing and his answer was , well if you want to get better at golf this is what you got to do 😃 I picked up my golf bag and went home 😂😂

100% agree. My only issue, I have seen loads of chipping/ pitching videos on KZbin (which is my weakness) however every time I go and see a pro they teach me another technique entirely. Paralysis by analysis.

Nice vid, Mark - a couple of thoughts.... There's only a couple of youtubers that I trust [including you Mark] so I stick to them almost exclusively. After almost 50 years of playing & studying golf, and spending most of that time in A-grade, I think I can filter out a lot of the stuff that doesn't suit me. Sometimes I play with "keen" friends who will say "I saw this on the net - what do you think?" They wonder why I wince! Too many rock on down with a new idea and try it from the first - a recipe for disaster. It's important with a new idea to try it out - practice it on the range before taking it to the course, or possibly discarding it. And youtube is not a substitute for lessons with a competent teaching pro - there is nothing as good as a one-on-one discussion with an expert. The biggest benefit of youtube for me is to watch great swings. I try to swing like past golfers with my body shape and tendencies - I am relatively short with a flat swing that sometimes gets into trouble with hooks.... so I watch a lot of Ben Hogan vids [if only!]. The other big benefit for me is trying to emulate the fantastic rhythm & timing of players like Steve Elkington and Louis Oosthuizen - that really helps me get into sync!

The issue I have with YT golf advice vids is that they do not have real people in them with swings like the viewers. Every YT golfer swings 100+ mph and can shape shot. There is a huge disconnect for us since many of us cannot relate. If the vids showed real golfers with varying swing speeds going through the suggestions/leaning, it would carry more weight. These YT efforts need to have that "I do that" click for the users for them to get more out of them.

Emphatic agreement. However -- this is based on having played and worked to improve for nearly 60 years -- know there are a lot of really lousy teachers out there too. Be very careful who you decide to listen to in real life as well.

I found taking ideas from too many content creators counter productive. Using the content to learn more about the swing has been really helpful

Ultimately I think you have to understand your own swing and know why it breaks and how to fix it. Once I understood and matched my grip with face control it became much easier.

KZbin got me from absolute beginner to being able to hit the course. Lessons got me from over 100 to under 100 and put the correct thoughts in my head when swinging. KZbin also has helped me build my bag with clubs that are right for me.

It can be a mixed bag with instructors. Had 3 lessons with one instructor in Virginia and definitely improved. Had 3 lessons with one in NC and came out of it with zero practice drills and minimal improvement if not a decline

The main problem is that a golf swing is an athletic swing and not everyone has that athletic ability and most of the KZbin inc club pros at my course are basing the swing on that unfortunately. So I only watch the videos that cater to helping the seniors which has helped me no end as for the other KZbinrs I watch purely for entertainment value xx

I ended up dropping all other KZbin golf channels and have been exclusively you and Coach since you two aren't just repeating the same old jargon. I like that you two are challenging the status quo!

I must say that KZbin has helped me improve my sway problems and learning techniques to shape a shot. I will try an idea if I think it may help me. If it works then; okay. If not, I'll move onto something else.

I'm actually starting to reduce my golf subscription slowly to ween myself off.. I'm only keeping golf vlogs and entertaining ones.. I got one swing method and I'm sticking to it until I play better (or quit!)... Best way to not follow useless tips is not seeing them!

In terms of swing mechanics, I've found KZbin is no substitute for an actual person-to-person instruction. In terms of equipment reviews and entertainment value it's great, but I've never found a video that's significantly improved my game. It's very hard to mimic what someone is doing on a phone screen.

The problem with youtube videos is they all come with clickbait-y titles like “the one secret that 99.9943517% of golfers don’t understand!” to lure you down their particular rabbit warren. One to one coaching is limited I feel also - the coach can only tell you what they observe. For instance i’ve had a coach tell me ‘try starting the downswing with your lower body more”. But it’s simply suggesting _to_ do something, without saying _how_ to do it. He’s observed what looks like starting the swing with the upper body, but just trying to start it with the lower just results in too much hip action which throws the club out of whack.

the “stand nearer to it with taller posture (and less knee bend)” is the one that kills me. When I try it my game just goes to shit almost as bad as the one piece takeaway. Just results in poorer strikes. Ive played with a 1 handicapper who seemed to have plenty of knee bend and worked for him. Hamstring flexibility is different in different people, possibly as a by product of other sports, and trying to override it produces too much tension imho.

What we need a golf tour that’s only available on KZbin. Hang one we’ve got one of those, the Muppet tour. That’s golf content on KZbin worth watching. All the other stuff is click bait rubbish. Apart from some content providers that do honestly put out some worthwhile information.

There have been some good basic golf swing thoughts that surely helped. But then there is some know it all people who has no idea and they confuse the less experienced golfer to the extent that their game falls apart. Then watch vids where the KZbinr goes for lessons and those coaches none the wiser.

How do you find a coach that is genuinely interested in you? or just sees you as a source of easy money. You need to see something yourself in the guys (or girls) personality. Out of all the different coaches I’ve used can’t really say I’ve bonded with any of them. Maybe it’s just me.

Saw someone mention it in a comment, stick to one youtuber. I 've suffered from this illness aswell and found out the easiest path to be cured is to narrow it down. I only "take advice" from one nowadays just because we are on the same journey. Older gentlemen searching for speed 🤣

I play off 13.6 my strokes gained according to shot scope 2022 season compared to a 10hc golfer are tee shot +0.09, approach - 2.97, short game, +0.35, putting -2.78. The greens at my club are notoriously slow and small. How much do you think this is playing into my statistics? I average 25% greens in reg on my course, however it moves to between 30-50% on other courses (my putting increases on these courses due to not being used to how fast they are). Any suggestions on how I should be using my statistics to improve my game on my unique course is welcome.
