I love around the 7 minute mark (slightly past it, actually) where you said, "It is the adults who cannot separate LGBT people from the sexual acts that they participate in." Honestly this is so true and I don't think it gets talked about nearly enough. I can't even count the number of times I've been in the middle of a perfectly normal conversation with someone, and then my sexuality comes up and suddenly the only thing that matters to the other person is the mechanics of how two girls can have sex. I can't tell you the frustration of walking down the street, hand in hand with my girlfriend, and have a guy scream at us to make out (and I won't even get into how disgusting it is that he only wants to see it so that he can enjoy the show. Like, for real? Go watch some lesbian porn. It's free, and you won't have to embarrass a 17 year old infantry soldier who can knock you on your ass in 2 seconds flat). It's ridiculous that my best friend's first reaction was, "But, like, can you have sex? Now that you're lesbian?" (first of all, it's not "now that I'm lesbian". I've always been lesbian. I just chose THIS moment to tell you.). The last relationship I was in lasted 4 months and there was 0 sex involved (shocking, right?!) and I was honestly disgusted that my "friend" looked at me and literally said, "But I thought all lesbians did was imitate sex?"... For real? Just stop. I go on dates. I hold hands. I kiss goodbye. I text, "tell me when you get there, so I know you're safe." I stay up late because my girlfriend won't hang up first. I lay back on the couch with my feet in her lap and play video games. You know, all the "normal" relationship stuff? Why do so many people think that being lesbian changes that? Another thing, since it's in my head now and will likely bug me for the rest of the night, why is it "a gay" or "a transgender" or "a lesbian", but never "a straight"? Like, are we suddenly things because we sleep with the same gender as ourselves? Are transgenders less human because they were born with the wrong tools? I mean I just don't understand why there's the extra little conjuncture in there. What's it's purpose? Okay, I'm sorry, thank you for reading, rant/s over.

Oh yes thank goodness you talked about this. People seem to not really understand why LGBT creators and supporters are so upset about this, I know that this isn't just affecting LGBT people, it is affecting a lot of other creators I watch as well. BUT, the fact that KZbin are restricting LGBT videos and yet are allowing the racist, homophobic, and downright despicable videos is what I get upset about. I'd much rather my nieces and nephews watch two people who love each other than a person spewing hate. How many times do these things have to happen before KZbin starts to realize that talking to their creators will stop all of the outrage and anger? How do they not learn?! Great video RJ as usual. As a Software Developer and website creator myself, I can see how they might be filtering out LGBTQ+ content, by simply doing a search for the word "*sex*" in the audio scripts for tags or description, etc. This would filter out videos labeled "biSEXual", "homoSEXual","tranSEXual", but leave tags like "gay" and "lesbian", or a few other used by LGBTQ+, so if they tested the filter against "gay" and "lesbian" to make sure they still appeared, they would have missed a few other SEXual orientations. However, you bring up a valid point about working with their community, and one thing KZbin could implement (and they might have in the KZbin Hero system) is User Acceptance Testing or UAT. Basically, its like Beta Testing a new build of the website, and would be a portal available only to users who generate money off their videoes or have a certain number of uploaded videoes. A build notification would be sent to each person with the ability to see the portal with Patch Notes on the New Features and Bug Fixes, and then left up for about a week to a month for users to browse, submit bugs and issues, and adjust their own content to minimize issues with the build. That would just be my suggestion.

Unfortunately, the algorithm definitely flags "gay" as well. Haven't seen any examples of "lesbian" or similar terms getting flagged, but I'd imagine it's the same.

Well said RJ, I knew you'd have a thorough and comprehensive response. I don't buy the "mistake" BS too, someone wrote the code that included LGBT+ related words in the filters. My entire channel and all my videos disappear because I have the word gay in my channel name, it's infuriating. I was giving KZbin the benefit of the doubt, but I'm new to the space, so I didn't realize this is not the first time something like this happened. You never fail to teach me something! Thanks!

I am always confused when people talk about "protecting the kids". I am a teenager now, and I know many people who are part of the LGBT community. As I grew up, I knew that not only could boys like girls and vice-versa, but I knew that it could also work in other ways. I genuinely don't remember ever finding that odd. (*and it isn't, obviously) Like, I remember reading an article in a magazine at the dentist when I was about 10 maybe, and It was about Tom Daley coming out as Gay. All I thought as I turned the page was "Why is that such a big deal?" and I still stand by that. I don't define someone by who they like. I define them by their personality and how good they are as a friend. This may be because I live in one of, if not the most LGBT accepting countries in the world, but I know that there are still improvements to be made here and all over the world.

Hi there RJ! Thanks for the great video! I am a shepsexual since 2011 or so and I wanted to speak my mind as a gay computer scientist. Nowadays, there is an emerging tech called deep learning which is also used by Google's Alpha Go as you may have heard. Assuming that they have used a deep learning algorithm to implement the restricted mode, it is actually the algorithm that predicts whether a video is safe for kids or not. In such an algorithm, you'd train the deep neural network on a dataset(in this case, a collection of videos that are safe and that are not) and try to predict whether a previously unseen video is NSFW or not (depending on some stuff called features that are determined by the algorithm itself). Maybe this is just a mere case of "overfitting" in which the algorithm performs well on training data but not good at all on real world cases. What I'm saying is, this is a brand new technology and they may have made a huge mistake. Shit happens... But this is KZbin, they should have been much more careful. Yet, please don't let this infuriate you. I believe in KZbin and I'm sure they will fix it asap. :) Great video as always! Love yaaaa!! *kisses* P.S. I bet it has something to do with the fact that the word sex and/or sexual is in the word bisexual. They probably put those words into some sort of list that would block the video that has that word in its title. So things like bisexual, transsexual, homosexual, asexual, etc would be blocked.

I don't know, I do think this might have been legitimately a mistake in the way they created this "Restricted Mode" algorithm. Maybe if the algorithm was created by using an AI method or something like that, it would be possible for it to become flawed given that, yes, a lot of LGBTQ+ content is not very kid-friendly. I don't know if this was the case, but what I'm saying is that it is a possibility that this issue might not have been intentional. If it was unintentional, were they aware of this? Maybe, and since we don't know the answer to this question, it really comes down to whether you believe they were aware or not. Given their history of support for the LGBTQ+ community, I am personally inclined to believe they did not know. Don't get me wrong, I do think this is a serious error, and yes it should be addressed, and I guess we'll see how KZbin really feels about LGBTQ+ content when and if they release a fix for this. Besides, I don't think KZbin has any obligations to release how their algorithms are used (or will, ever), I mean, that's their product and largely the reason why they are succesful, because their algorthims are (as far as I know) top notch, that's why the Google search engine became so popular. I don't think they want them to be public knowledge. And no, I don't work for KZbin.

im not saying it was partisan or intentionally LGBT/progressive specific, that would be ludicrous to assume, however, most of those you stated looked like current affairs programmes and with the ever changing and often brutal nature of the news, it may be more easily explained why they were blocked (also some of those individuals did swear). But my point was (and I'm sorry it was poorly made now I read it back) I'm still not convinced that even if an algorithm problem it makes the idea any better. The sheer number and massive scope of things you have to block due to the messiness of existence means you restrict people from centuries of human progression and instead give them a cartoon network style system in its place, with nothing in place to ensure that the filter is even applied properly and appropriately by parents.

I think the best solution for creators is to utilize negotiating and bargaining power with KZbin. Determine a strategy or agreement with internet platforms like KZbin. And if that doesn't work develop a strategy to collectively take protested actions to ensure an agreement is made. Find a solution that demonstrates that it is in KZbin's best interests to cooperate with content creators. After all without content creators the bulk of their ad revenue would diminish without new content to attract viewerships.

It's really disappointing how KZbin keeps doing things like this. Hopefully they will learn from it and stop keeping everyone in the dark. This time is especially sad to me because without lgbtq content on KZbin I would of never (or it would of take much longer) been able to truly understand lgbtq stuff and myself. As an autistic person my brain can find understand things to do with people hard. I heard and read about lgbtq over tumblr but without seeing and hearing youtuber who are bi, pan, gay etc. I wouldn't of really being able to have it click in my mind what it was. although I agree that this is bad, youtube doesn't actually code like that. they may genuinely not know what is in their code as they use self coding algorithms which means that no person actually specifically input that code but that the test for these bots was not good enough. this could mean that it was a lack of 'questions' on this test about the LGBTQ+ rather than a malicious intent (developing their tech in this case means that they are improving the test for the self programing algorithms).

Considering Alphabet is working heavily on Machine Learning, I presume they are using a trained AI that they don't understand, instead of humans deciding what should be "restricted". It is still bad, because it indicates that they have terrible quality control with their training data (Google Photos being racist?). We the LGBTQ need a more inclusive platform to host our videos. This was my wake up call that google is way too big to be safe. They're in everything we do and that's kind of a terrible thing to be trusting in for so much. As I said, I did sell my android LG V10 and went with an iPhone. After like 10 years I ditched chrome and I'm now on Firefox. The only way to fix this is to hit them where it hurts and that's by ending subscriptions changing services etc.

The filter works with user flagging. The reason why LGBT content is affected so much is because of homophobes flagging LGBT content, which makes it stand as "controversial" even if it didn't get reviewed. Yes, KZbin's system is somewhat broken, but it isn't bigotted.

I can understand blocking adult themed content that's explicit, but blocking a coming out video like really?! what's wrong with coming out? while i agree youtube messed up big time, but let's face it, those homophobes that sent complaints probably bitched at youtube for allowing gay content and flagged gay content, so i guess youtube was weak, felt the heat, and because they also have to deal with customer service, they went to the easy route and restricted gay content. a bad move i agree.
