When I saw the thumbnail, the first thing I thought of was the audience. In KZbin, the focus is on the audience while in cinema, the watchers are witnesses.

There's a certain irony in the fact that if you want to get a cinematic image, you don't need a cinema camera. Just put a light on the far side of someone's face, a neg on the near side, and you're already much closer to that cinematic look that any camera can give you. Also just hats off to that intro sequence, how many attempts did it take to get the timing right on that?!
@DodaGarcia3 жыл бұрын
When I first learned, I think from a Parker Walbeck video, that the look we associate with film is far more related to the lighting than it is to the camera it entirely blew my mind.

This was so well explained and shot. The dedication of filming all these details and having all these takes just for a quick youtube tutorial. Really great!
@avtoportret3 жыл бұрын
That's actually was very valuable. What's interesting is to see that going with a cinema look on youtube looks just weird. But using same setup from youtube in cinema makes it look unprofessional. They're so different, so incompatible, and so much where they have to be. And another thing - I never studied cinematography, I am self taught, and on youtube they're almost never talk about filming the shadows! Your video is like a third one about that, and I feel like it has to be every second one! It took me years as well untill I saw that, learned that, understood that and started to implement that not just by accident, but intentionally.

3:26 “in film depth of field can be shallower”. I’ve always learned the opposite? Films tend to have a deeper depth of field because it’s difficult to pull focus at f 1.4. I believe it’s rare for them to go beyond 5.6 for this reason

This reminds me of the differences between TV and film in the 60s or so. You’ve got a small screen (in the case of KZbin, maybe a phone) and the subject has to be readable in that smaller frame from halfway across the room while cooking dinner. No wonder you would make the shot as straightforward as possible.
