I'm sure there are plenty of instances when it does go awry, but in my experience the vast majority of the time when somebody says 'political correctness gone mad', nobody has been arrested or anything and what they really mean is 'Somebody is disagreeing with and criticizing me and now i have to defend my indefensible position.' Some people have very weird ideas about freedom of speech. All it is is protection from the government (with a long list of caveats), it is not freedom from criticism or speech without consequences. Being called a bigot is not restricting your right, it is somebody else excercising theirs.

I do like that he described PC as "often clumsy" because there definitely are cases of clumsiness. Despite lots of stories being made up, there have been cases of teachers encouraging kids to sing "baa baa rainbow sheep" and silly stuff like that - but the salient point is rather than being a symptom of PC gone mad, it's in fact one individual person being a little overcautious and trying to protect themselves by censoring something that no-one reasonable would ever find offensive. They are minor incidents at best. But of course they make good headlines when splashed all over the Daily Mail.

Even the particular example you used was mischaracterized and had nothing to do with political correctness, the teacher was giving children an example of creativity, taking existing things and changing them into other things. Some parent decided to view this as 'political correctness' and then the daily mail morphed that into children being BANNED from singing the original song, which led to a nationwide hysteria. Of course there certainly are real examples of attempts at inclusive language being clumsy or unwieldy, but even if that never happened you can be certain the right wing would fabricate nonsense to justify being able to frame "not calling people the n word" as somehow a societal evil.

Disagree. Political correctness has in many instances been an affront to common sense. The absurd level of (well intentioned?) do-goodery has been extremely patronising to be quite honest. It has also stripped our language of some of its nuanced richness and societies deeper understanding of terms. Leaving us with a bland, sort of neutral grey/off white palette with which to paint.
