Granny always told me "Taysha, you are a GIVER and GIVERS have to set limits because TAKERS never do". It's so hard because the joy I get out of giving and being of service to others goes so much further than anything else I've experienced in life. Limits. Definitely need to set limits, as we can see here with poor Rahat. Another thing Granny used to say (which I believe is in the Bible?) "The WICKED will NEVER prosper from ill-gotten gain". I've seen the truth of that statement play out so many times.

People outside of the low income community, should not directly "help" people withen in low income community. Simply put, Rahat had not come up in the environment and did not have the necessary skills to detect Eric's deceptions. Anybody from the community could've immediately told that Eric was not a genuine person from the start. Game recognize game, and Rahat was a mark, an easy one. That's the point of this case though. I'm sure Eric had the same feeling when he received that support. But because he was given the huge amount money without having to work for it, he felt it would be an ongoing thing and deemed the low paying job worthless compared to the amount he's getting through donations. He abused it and started to want more money to feed his addiction, and when he wasn't getting more he turned to bite the hand that fed him.

@@dagmarland I grew up VERY poor. I'm talking almost 100% of my clothes were from flea markets till I was about 18. We could only afford a certain amount of food every day, so I had a BMI of 17.3. My advantage was that my parents actually had pretty good education and I had friends. I have spent WAY too much money too many times. I have been late on rent many times, even went $2500 into debt with a friend at one point, but I promised to pay him back, and I did. Today I own a house and use most of my savings to renovate it. I would say I'm better than the average person at budgeting. If people put in an effort, they can learn how to spend their money.

The thing is, Rahat gave him too much. He started with a house. This is crazy. Should have started with a small apartment. Should have the homeless choose the furniture. Help to carry the furniture into the small apartment. Like all normal people start their life when they start a job. Then the homeless could have worked his way up being supported by the money. Little by little he could have grown into a person that is able to run a house and a job. Rahat wasted the fundraiser on just one guy who was not ready for this amount of money. Should have founded a common house for a group of homeless guys. Maybe one or two of the group would have made it to a job.

Rahat you are an awesome human being. Reaching out to change lives takes a pretty special kind of person. Tragically there are so many con artists out there. He and his cronies certainly proved that they deserve to be destitute and homeless. I really hope you can come back from this and be a lot more assertive. Perhaps next time, you can set a goal and when that target has been reached, your followers know that the balance would be used to assist somebody else, and so on. This really became a nightmare for you. There are so many hard earned lessons here. You have the friends, the documentation, and more than enough witnesses to be more credible than the lost cause you tried to help. As for Raz or whatever his name is, he used a biased and uncorroborated interview to up his subscribers and income. "Seemingly", the word he himself used, should have made him ask more questions before he posted any of it.

It isn't he is ungrateful. He is a prisoner to his addictions. From personal experience with my own family member struggling with addictions, what Rahat explained is what I went and am still going through with a family member. Rahat should have used that money, to help pay for Rehab/Therapy, then the remainder to be used after he got out. But he didn't know. Most homelessness is due to addiction, or they eventually turned to substance abuse, once in that realm, it takes professionals to help them, not someone with $40k giving them a house to help them turn their life around. This was no ones fault.

Rahat you did a very good deed to try to change this man's life and give him purpose. You gave him ALL the tools he needed, shelter, clothing, food, job, however because the man did not try to help himself by staying away from old friends and alcohol of course this could NEVER work. The main thing is that you tried and hopefully you will be able to regain your life back. 🙂

That's it. I've been around the recovery community for a long time and I've seen it countless times. You can set someone up with the world but if the person isn't putting in self-work, it's dust in the wind. The intentions were good, but this is pretty typical.

@@nonreturn7386 I wonder why this wasn't checked into beforehand? Eric needed to be in recovery and getting help with his issues FIRST. I understand it was a lottery. With that being said, there should have been a collaboration with recommendations from a shelter or community resource center. This money could have been used for a person who really would have been helped with something this spectacular. Just sad and disheartening.

I feel for Rahat. If you feel called to philanthropy and altruism, you have to have a very thick skin and be prepared for disappointments. The percentage of assistance that results in long term change or solutions is very small. You have to find enough nourishment in that small percentage to sustain you through the failures, and learn not to take it personally. Very very hard to do, and compassion fatigue is very real and common. But - we need folks like Rahat, with a genuinely caring spirit and a transformation mindset. Now more than ever. Rahat, I encourage you to use this lesson as a platform from which to continue. You can effect real change, and you have purpose. Revise and rise, Good Man!
