Yh exactly he knew he was dying thats why he asked for the mask to be removed in the first place so he could look upon his son one last lime with his own eyes

Sebastian Shaw played this moment perfectly. It could have been so cheesy, but he gave it a seriousness that it really needed.

Plus Ian mcdiarmid who played palpatine was actually surprised to see him on set and asked him what he was doing there and shaw replied “I don’t know my boy I think it’s something to do with science fiction” and shaw had watched the first two Star Wars films as well

Anakin was using the dark side alot and it prematurely aged and disfigured his appearance. But he is not angry and rage filled anymore and finally at peace.

No hate, I do wonder how much the reactor’s actually watch the film, yes he had his hand cut off, however he had been electrocuted, the suit was keeping him alive and the life support systems were overwhelmed.

I don't remember my exact reaction to "I am your father" cause I was so young when I first saw it, but I remember seeing this in '83 perfectly well. I couldn't believe they actually showed what Vader looked like.

I remember seeing this in the theater in '83. For 6 years, we all despised Darth Vader & couldn't wait for him to meet his end. But then it happened, and I remember the audience just sitting in stunned silence. No cheering, no applause, because Vader had redeemed himself at the very end, knowing that it was going to cost him his life, and he died a hero.

To me there's something special about seeing these first time reaction to this particular video because as someone who grew up in the 80s and actually saw all three of these movies in the theater. It's so refreshing to see that not everybody knows Star Wars, not everybody knows the story of the Skywalkers, and so to find this out and to see this happen is actually a very good thing. It means that a whole new slew of fans will now get to appreciate and love Star Wars as much as we all have the last 40+ years.

Emme has become one of my favorite reaction channels and I’m glad she’s finally getting recognition. Watching the movies in chronological order and extended media before this made her develop a lot of empathy for Anakin.

To all the people who are saying just put the mask back on, Vader himself said he was dying. Remember he took the full brunt of the power blast from the Emperor. That shorted out all the tech on Vader. Vader was a full on cyborg at this point, needing tech to see and breath so once Vader got zapped,game over. Fun fact: Vader’s skin looking like that is the result of years of using that dark side just like then Emperor. Using the dark side is so destructive that no flesh is immune to it .

The only reason Vader didn't die instantly when the emperor's lightning shorted out his life support system is because he was using the force to keep himself alive, but couldn't sustain it indefinitely.

@@angerami77Nah they absolutely would've executed him. He "changed" at the end but that doesn't absolve him and he would absolutely be too dangerous to risk keeping alive. What happens when an imprisoned Vader gets tired of confinement and punishment? He turns again and now you're stuck with the most dangerous being in the galaxy who can murder people at a distance with his mind.

If you hadn’t seen the prequels you really only have your imagination to visualize what Vader/Anakin looks like under the mask. But under it all he was just a man. I remember watching this as a teenager feeling a bit underwhelmed by the reveal, but my father said something like “it wasn’t what he looked like that made him a monster, it was what he did.”

What always blows me away when people watch the Original Trilogy first and don't know Vader's back story, is it makes you wonder what could be under that helmet. Scary Alien? Evil Robot Perhaps? No... In the end you find out it's really just an old fragile man in the suit and to me that makes the scene a lot more sad and impactful. At least when I first saw it when I was young. 🙏😁

I remember hearing once that they originally planned on Dave Prowse (who played Vader throughout the movies) doing this scene, but his British accent was so thick that the producers changed their minds & had Sebastian Shaw do the scene.

45? Anakin was about 23 when he turned. And here, Luke was about 25. I thought he was just a little less than 50. Anyway, it was not just "Time" that had consumed him. To be sure, the Dark Side burned up his body, since he was always in a state of fury and anger. Not to mention that there were _multiple_ events where he got injured or body parts chopped off.

The biggest reason why he looks that way is due to all the years of using the dark side. The dark side is so destructive that it simply wastes your body away just like the Emperor.

He let go of the hate. The hate is what kept him alive and able to withdtand all the pain. Without it, his body was dying and he knew it.

Also didn’t help that he lost a hand and that his suit was specifically designed by Palpatine to be vulnerable to force lightning which Bader took a massive dose of.
