I remember being in the theater in 1983 watching this. Throughout the entirety of the original series, Darth Vader was the most despised villain ever, and then Return of the Jedi happens. In a moment of love for his son, Anakin attacks & kills the Emperor, knowing full well what would happen to him, and totally redeems himself. And then Luke removes his helmet, allowing the audience to see what was beneath for the first time. And then Darth Vader is gone, and despite being a hated villain for years, the entire theater was stunned into silence. No cheers, no applause, just a moment of profound sadness knowing that Anakin had finally redeemed himself.

Vader was connected to Luke through the Force like he has several other times. Another Example was at the end of Empire Strikes back, Love for his son saved Anakin in the end!

After 47 years this scene still gets me. Because no one truly understands the power of the love between Father and son. Just like most people don't understand the power between the love of a mother and a daughter! That's what makes this movie series and trilogies so amazing. Luke was everything his father wasn't. If you've ever read shadows of the empire where Darth Vader openly states that his son is more powerful than he ever was he's more powerful than Yoda. It's the only time you ever hear Vader's true feelings for his son where he believed his son is the most powerful Jedi to ever live. The book The Shadow of the empire is in between episode 5 and 6 and that's where Vader claims that his son is the most powerful Jedi to ever live! Which frightens him and makes him well up with pride for his son! That's how you know that Luke was the chosen one not Anakin!
@ChrisVillagomez20 күн бұрын
The real tragedy of Star Wars is Anakin becoming Darth Vader. When Luke removes his mask, Anakin is back, and everyone can see the love in his eyes for his son. Stannis Baratheon said: "A good deed does not wash out the bad, nor a bad to good." Anakin was the killer of millions, possibly billions over the course of the Empire, and he also gave his own life to save his son, destroy the Emperor, and return to the Light Side

"Let me look on you.. with my OWN eyes." If you look deeper into this.. Anakin basically spent his entire life looking at things through someone elses eyes. He was a slave and had to do what his master wanted in his perspective. With the Jedi, he still had a master and he was told to view things on a specific way. Then he turned to the dark side, and viewed the galaxy as his Emperor saw fit. In this moment.. the one moment in his life.. where he wanted to look on his son through his own eyes rather than through the eyes of others. In this moment, he was TRULY free.
