I'm so glad that you mention the excessive dialogue that it feels like a lot of games are falling into these days. Like, I LOVE the Trails series and I enjoy talking about how big characters' boobs are as much as the next guy, but especially these days as I am getting older and have job, wife, kids, etc to juggle, I just don't have time and don't care to listen to characters go on about things that aren't plot relevant.

I live in Germany and the Ys series and Wonder Boy series "forced" me to learn english back in the early 90s. One day my father bought me an English-German dictionary and I remember I looked every single word up to understand clues and the story.

Not sure if someone mentioned this but for the blue speed attacks. You don't need to dodge, you just need to hold down the dash button (which is also the dodge button). so just run when the speed attack is being done (you can even run towards the speed attack to intentionally trigger the blue counter)

I I just finished YS X and I loved it! You were spot on a about Trails influence on this game. There is a lot of dialogue and cut scenes! Which i did love cause it made me love the characters more and the story more endearing but yea it needs to be toned done next Ys game! But overall i loved this new entry the naval combat was fun and i just loved exploring! That's what was missing for me in Ys 9! Ys8 still might be my favorite, but this game yea easily 2nd or 3rd best Ys game for me!

I'll give modern western developed rpgs or games in general, credit in this regard, they know when to shut up no matter how self serious they may often come across. I think the limitations of old jrpgs hid their sometimes bad storytelling capabilities.

Regarding the long conversations my biggest complaint about all modern RPGs is they make them too long. The conversations drag on, the story drags on too long with too much filler etc. I've come to realize the limitations of the old consoles were a huge blessing. It forced devs to make a much more focused story and experience. There's very few modern RPGs I've been able to finish because of this.

Especially in worlds that are generic and stories that are generic which is what the ys series is to me I tried a couple of them but the worlds are just so generic Doesn’t feel like there is any real weight to the world If you wanna know what I mean Metaphor refantazio has tremendous weight to its world

@@WdawgSmith To me that's less noticeable when the game is shorter. For example I don't feel like the world is particularly interesting in any Dragon Quest game yet I enjoy the earlier ones because they don't just keep dragging. I never really made it through 11 because it's so long. In a similar vein Xenoblade has incredibly creative worlds but I've only ever made it through the first one. Even then about the last 25% of the game I was just trudging along saying come on end already.

I'm the kind of guy that has to run around the whole map talking to every character whenever NPC dialog changes. It's kind of what Falcom games are known for now, and there's great stuff in there I don't want to miss. It was fine in Trails in the Sky but it did kind of kill the pace of Ys IX and Tokyo Xanadu.

Thank you for the review! I was really excited for this Ys game, but other reviews have said the same thing: it starts off way too slow. I just finished my first Trails game, and I think that intense volume of dialogue just isn't for me. I only have about an hour a day to play a game (if that), so I want to actually be able to play it! Not just spam the action button through endless cut scenes.

I have a huge backlog of games, like most people, but some games automatically push themselves to the front of the line. For me, that was Metaphor - a game I had very little interest in until I played the demo. It’s just so good. I’m sure it’s the same with this game for some people.

Grabbed the demo today, and the overwhelming amount of dialogue and cutscenes immediately stood out to me. VIII did it well enough, I liked the characters enough in IX to deal with it, but X definitely giving me Cold Steel 1 & 3 vibes. I'mma still play it though. Lol.

I just got to the lighthouse myself. Took me an hour and a half (a third of which was spent in disbelief in not being able to enter buildings so easily 😂) I like getting to roleplay Adol more even though that's not for everyone (Dialogue choices outnumber Memories of Celceta for sure). What drove me batty was the fact that a bunch of the replies to Adol were voice-acted (I'm glad this didn't happen when you talked to everyone aboard the Lombardia in VIII). I understand that they want the introductory phase of the side characters to be grand but dumping a lot of the character work and stopping the flow with cutscenes was not fun. I preferred it when the mini/side-stories were in text/optional and you just jumped into learning the new mechanics and figuring out if the new button configuration suits you. The storybook nature of JRPGs has always been a double-edged sword and I'm not happy when devs forget this.

I love the Ys series, I played them all in chronological release order (even 5!). My favourite are still 2 for the ending, 8 for music and gameplay, 9 for story and characters. I started playing X today and it looks promising.

as someone who's about to enter the final boss fight. yeah the story does not compare to YS8 at all. The characters are vibrant and have their own moments......but for some reason it feels like their arcs are one and done so fast i completely forget they even had a conflict. Cruz conflict was about his career path and wanting to be a shipwright but was afraid if he even had a choice due to his father's constant enthusiasm to want Cruz to take over the trading company and despite numerous moment aboard the Sandras indicating the eventual confrontation between the two.....and it's resolved in an optional affinity moment and very quickly mind you. AND THIS GOES FOR EVERYONE, the eventual conflicts each of the youth brigade (the people that help you in the Sandras as core members) are resolved so quickly and easy that it's quite pitiful to even acknowledge the conflict. RAFE was the biggest victim of this, his final affinity? seeing his father die to protect him (because apparently those years in the ispanil mercenary didn't quite teach this man how to dodge or look at his back). it's done so horribly (DOESN'T EVEN HAVE VOICED DIALOGUE DESPITE THIS BEING A MAJOR EVENT). The captain and Jack in YS 8 had better final moments than whatever the heck all of these are. TLDR; the affinity system in this game is an inferior and downgraded version of the one present in YS8 and this is detrimental to it's characters since it's supposed to make the player learn about them, but we learn THE BAREST OF MINIMUM even when maxing out their affinity. Doesn't help that while some have tragic backstories, some of the other's conflict (Rosa and Phyllea) are such a rose tinted "it's not just black and white" and they give out a very sad and "i had no choice" narrative, when in reality, IT WAS BLACK AND WHITE. Phyllea had absolutely 0, zilch, Cero, Zero, NULL reasons to not tell her family "hey i'm going with someone and i think i ain't going back for a long time. love you all! and when i have time i'll be sure to visit". i'm reaching end game and i still don't know why Phyllea didn't tell her family she was going to marry a Norman, the entire family knows she's free spirited so it's not like it mattered at all and despite her reasons being that her family was being targeted, hence why she stayed on balta island and became a warrior, that still doesn't change the fact that because of her choice the entire family business and dream was at the point of collapse, with or without the pirate targeting them. Yet the dialogue wants us to think that "Nooo, no one is wrong, it's just an unfortunate coincidence and misunderstandings" LIKE MAN LET'S BE FOR REAL, it was because she left without a word. Main story wise, i did love how Karja was developing as a human and a norman warrior, understanding the basis of what is life outside of battle and that sometimes relying on others (or having a shield brother named adol) can allow you to reach greater heights one could only dream off.......and then the whole "I'm Rollo's Descendant and now the norman's want me dead" happened and the story died there. They had the AUDACITY, to put Horik (a norman who was about to cheat on his wife) be portrayed as the morally right character. I....what?! Grimson wanting to put an end to Rollo makes sense, it was because of that curse that Ilina died, it was purely selfish on his behalf and he has already stated that he was a failure of a father and willing to live up to that title if it meant ending rollo, i understand that. THE OTHERS???? WDYM YOU HAD NO CHOICE???? YOU ALL KNEW WHO THE TRIDENT WERE AND HOW ROLLO WOULD REAWAKENED, just don't bring Karja next to em!! Grimson HIMSELF had the power to end the Trident (it caused Joro and Jgol to retreat). THERE WAS A CHOICE, A RIGHT ONE and the game wants to me believe that there wasn't??? that this was fated to happen? Give me a break, the normans were growing on me as both savage warriors on the battlefield but clearly evolving to be more human than beasts, and they just threw that out the window. EVEN WHEN ILINA HERSELF CAME AND TOLD THEM TO NOT DO IT, they still wanted to end Karja. I have never seen such a 180 in their brains. Each time i met a norman in this section of the story, it was such a bore of hearing "i'm not here to fight, i just wanted to see how you all are" "YOU AIN'T FOOLING US ROLLO" "It's fine if you think i'm rollo, but i myself am fighting Rollo too" "Ugh....uuuugh i'm sorry princess, we had no other choice" over and over and over again. god damn, OUR WORLD'S VIKINGS could demolish these norman's in a heartbeat simply because of their attitudes and culture. I'm upset about this because damn, the sagas about Torsten, Ivar and Rollo are genuinely great, i was invested in these stories and the sudden change of Rollo was something that i didn't expect but was intrigued to see what actually changed their minds. Turns out, Rollo was born with some sort of curse of the 3 evils, hubris, nihil and lust (don't know why Joro is lust, there's like only 1 scene of her doing this trait and the rest is just anger). Still haven't beaten the boss and i kinda already know what the identity of the old man is (after seeing the picture in the chest and rescuing Lila who tells us she was Rollo's wife, it clicked on me). So i'm invested in this part of the Norman legend (that said, lots of gods mentioned, barely seen any one of them). But got damn was the "Rollo" hunt so astronomically dumb. god i hope they suffered through a calamity (plague) when Adol became old, those people are the definition of "Built alternatively wrong, built without the preset parameters, everyone built different, but they are just built incorrectly, like it's just wrong and they should not exist". Grimson's comment sent me when we were on Rollo's ark "actually i hoped the Sea Throne could fix this business with Rollo quickly" if that's what you hoped for, mf, WHY DID YOU SEND PEERLESS PAIR THEN??? FOR A TEST??? FOR CHITS AND GIGGLES???? IN A SUCH CRUCIAL MOMENT??? Final words for my once favorite character: Phyllea started as my favorited member of the Normans (even tho she was a non norman), came out being the absolute worse human ever, her lack of communication are off the charts, over 9 thousand. Can't even join in the fight to save her sister or even talk to explain something so basic, that's how bad it is. Even SIR CARLAN in YS 8 is a far better human than her, guys a prik but at least he tells people what he wants and what he will do, this girl is somehow more of a coward than a noble WHO DOES NOT HAVE ANY FIGHTING EXPERIENCE OR NAUTICAL NAVIGATION SKILLS AND POMPOUS DEMANDING LEECH who FLAT OUT tells you in YOUR FACE that he will not join you in helping the crew escape the island. As much of a snob Sir Carlan is, that man knows what he likes, what he doesn't like and is not afraid to tell a person who's 2x stronger, taller and smarter than him that "you want me to help you? in your wildest dreams" and just leaves. Phyllea apparently when to Norman and honed her skills so she can be "betrothed" to her loved one, yet can't even look at Rosa in the face, and runs away from her parents sight. H O W???? HOW IS IT POSSIBLE FOR A NOBLE TO BE BRAVER THAN A PSEUDO NORMAN????? Not to mention Phyllea never grows as a character, she never went and apologized to her family, only her sister, when the main victims are the ENTIRE family (still haven't fought the final boss (literally at the door) so don't know if some post credit scene will show me the conclusion of that). But Sir Carlan? now that is a man who properly grew based on his environment and surroundings, from being a pompous dead weight who never contributed to the village, to becoming humble after being forced to survive for himself for days when he almost escaped Oceanus. While still being a proud noble, he starts contributing in efficient manners to the village and slowly taming his arrogant side (very slowly). NOW THAT IS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. it costed her literally nothing to just send an anonymous message to them after they stop getting targeted or even visiting them. Also on the subject of her, what's the deal with her husband? guy lost the ability to wield a sword but suddenly when the princess shows in balta island after starting the "Hunt for Rollo" story section, guy is using a sword......i thought he couldn't wield one? or could it be that they meant he can't use the skills he used to have as a swordsman because of the arm injury? confused and i'm sure it still won't be explained even after finishing this game, seeing as this guy has no affinity stars. Story as a whole is great, but those "Rollo" sections really weren't that satisfactory from beginning to end, the only good parts are the parts that do not involve the normans. Affinity system could've used more time in the oven because it is such a bare effort to even raise such affinity (doesn't help that by the time you get one of the characters affinities, you are literally AT THE END OF THE GAME, so it provides nothing to the character or plot). Still, i quite liked the story and glad it still hasn't pulled a Deus Ex plot out of nowhere like in YS 9 (don't hate it as much, cause like the monstrum nox didn't quite get the memo that Adol is an adventurer and does not want the vigilante life so of course he wished for all to be fixed and i was also fully on board of leaving that god forsaken city). gameplay is peak, nothing more to say (which there were more duo and individual skills though, also i still don't know why duo skills have a mastery gauge when it doesn't even unlock any new skills like individual skills do, not even an achievement).

beaten the game. was nice to hear that Karja isn't going to stayed cooped up in the obelia gulf and that at one point the Normans will migrate again, not to thrilled about that though since it means other places to pillage and plunder (haven't gotten a single hint that they learned from Rollo and try to change their ways, but here's hoping), The Greigr explanation is satisfying and makes sense if we think about how they came to be, the only exception is, WHO THE HECK IS THE MAN WISHING FOR THAT LVL 99 SUPER BOSS VERMODR???? it said it has the techniques of ancient heroes (first time we hear that there are heroes in this part of the world btw, might be indicating that world's thor due to how vermodr controls lightning). Still want to see the gods though, they hold the answer to the remaining mysteries of the Sea King's Throne. other than that, thoughts remain the same, Phyllea is implied to, EVENTUALLY, come to them to help reconstruction of carnac, we never see it though, not even in the credits. Not a single norman will apologize for trying to kill the princess (despite them being clearly wrong) and we just brushed this aside as if nothing happened, it's not even the norman way since they always hold grudges but hey, it is what it is. Overall, good game, highly recommend it for people to try it, ain't the best story out there and the characters don't even come close to the entire cast in YS 8 but it's still enjoyable for what it offers. Gameplay is superior to YS 8 (only in combat though, the raids of the village are inherently more challenging than the recapture segments in the Obelia Gulf). Exploration in the sea is satisfying (even though we don't fully explore the outskirts of said ocean but we have plenty to see). might try out YS 9 now that i played this, interested to see how different it is.

Agreed. I really like the Trails series, but especially with later Cold Steel entries, the inane cringey dialog that adds absolutely nothing to the game got to be so obtrusive that I found it difficult to slog through the game. Ys is best when the story is more straight to the point and the gameplay carries the experience along with the kickass music.

The SNES version of Ys 3 was my first, and is still my favorite, but queen of hot takes here also loves Zelda 2: Adventure of Link, so take that for what it's worth. After that, I did actually pick up a copy of the SEGA Master System version of the first game, believe it or not, but I've never been a fan of the bump combat, so to me, the series started getting really good with 6. 9 was a little bit too far into 3D Platformer territory for me, though, and I usually have trouble figuring out where I should and shouldn't jump in those, so since this is continuing that, I probably won't pick it up. Thanks for the review, though; making informed decisions for buying games is more important now than ever.

Yup, highly looking forward to it! My most anticipated game of 2024 after Daybreak and Metaphor. As a Trails AND an Ys fan though, I hope Falcom don't start mixing up the two. Ys should be an action game first and foremost. Still, combat looks excellent and that's the bread and butter of Ys, so it's all good. :)

Im only in the 2nd chapter and about to do the shield brother bit, but so far i like it. I have gooded more times than i wanna admit on guarding and its interesting from what i saw you only get skill mastery for using skills on enemies. In previous games you could go ham grinding them in or out of combat. I think IX did skills best though sp went down a lil as they leveled up. Im not complaining im loving Ys X so far.

I cant wait I have both the PS5&Switch CE's coming. I was just going to get the switch version but I realized id rather play it on PS. I had a $45 NIS reward credit so I said screw I can always sell one down the road maybe. Im playing Metaphor ReFantazio right now and im only like 6hrs in so im not sure when ill get to it. Ι do agree a lot about the '' trailisation'' issue . I also believe the next game should be with just Adol and more difficult like the older games . I read that ys 10 is generally no that difficult even in nightmare and that's something I noticed in ys 9 also . Lastly I haven't listened all the music tracks from the game but my impression is that there is a luck of inspiration in this sector ,starting from ys ix . Apart from these things I eagerly wait to play the game ,because Adol is my favourite rpg character of all time ( I was also there when ys was released on the snes )

looking forward to ys x, fresh off the back of finishing ys8, im getting an ys game on launch for the first time because of my experience with 8, i literally couldnt put it down

So many great JRPGs releasing this month and early next one, but I'm staying faithful to Ys. Falcom need my money more, and they also treat me better as a customer. I'll wait until Christmas for Metaphor and Dragon Quest 3.

Good god, why is every JRPG I’ve been excited about for ages coming out at the same time!?? Thanks for this review. While it looks great, I think this game is going to get side tabled for a couple months while I work on Metaphor and then DQ III, but I’m definitely gonna have to pick this one up too at some point.

I have never really been bothered by trails dialog that much even if some of the "every character needs to chip in" does get old. That could be because my first RPG was Xenogears and Xenosaga though...

I've been playing Ys since VI on the ps2. Didn't hear of 3 on the Super nintendo until I was an adult unfortunately, but been a fan ever since. I am excited to play X and the remaster of Oath of Felghana psp version, which is essentially a remake of 3. 😂 I just hope they finally remake V, I had to play it on an emulator, but it'd be awesome if they ever do. 🙏

I wanted to try the ys series at some point, but this video didn't really sell me on it. Visions of Mana, a game I played recently, frankly looks a lot better than this. With so many games coming out right now as well as being in the middle of metaphor refantazio which will certainly take me many weeks to complete, I think I need to pass on this one. Then there's dragon quest, romancing saga 2, and fantasian neo dimension... yeah this one is a pass.

Falcom games have a PS3 era aesthetics and they never try to overdo it, it does look bit more dated compared to modern entries but as a whole package they do make for a nice experience! Visions of mana does not get enough love as well, this year has been great for JRPG fans!

Love this game so far, one of the best in the series overall IMO. I am a bit curious though: Does anyone know if there is more than one ending to the game? Like an Ys 8 sorta deal or something similar? Mainly asking since that was probably my biggest gripe with that game (Which honestly says a lot since I saw it more as encouragement to explore the game as much as possible). And I'd love to get the 'best ending' in Ys X, if there is such a thing as multiple endings.

The BIG problem i had with Ys X (japanese version), it's that the gameplay felt so slow... never seen an Ys game been this slow since the Ys games when you were just bumping on enemies, there's no flash guard nor flash moves (a staple for Ys games), the main gimmick of this game is about perfect blocking (which isn't that hard to execute, the window is pretty generous). Still a good game but i was more satisfied with the Switch remaster of Oath in Felghana personally (again, japanese version) and some older titles like Ys VIII, Origin or even Ys IX for it's very fast paced gameplay alone (the story was meh though).

Hey, now! Ys III for the SNES was alright. It was my first Ys, but I also think Zelda II on the NES is the best Zelda. So, maybe I’m the outlier. Great episode as always. Here’s a question though. How is the localization? Is there any of that western funny business?

The one thing I don't like about this game.. Is the pirate thing.. There literally vikings.. Not pirate's.. Ya pirates and Vikings kinda act the same.. But There conquerors like the Spanish Conquistadors.. So they should have said Vikings or Pikings since this game loooves wordplay

I'm so behind on YS and Trails. I have not played YS since six on the ps2. 8,9 and 10 all look great. I just have not gotten around to them. I've played the first two sky games and the first Cold Steel game, but I'm behind there too.

I really love this game but no, it’s not your fault. Dropped Ys X on hard and while I’ve been having a fun time, the game is poorly paced; has bloated, needless systems; and stilted island exploration combined with mediocre ship combat I don’t want to do anymore. It’s not Ys 8. One boss battle was a one hit kill on me or I beat it without getting hit easily when I figured out a strategy that felt kinda lame and exploitive. But it was so unbalanced I had no choice. I enjoy it, glad I got it, it’s a solid 8/10. By Ys 8 is almost a perfect video game.
