The bases were off and they are white. When Fenty came out with lavender cream blush it was thin and buildable and came off with pinkish finish and it was cute! But you can still use them in different ways. The ads are wrong and misleading. I’m angry that she was bullied and made to feel like she had to take a break over this.

It makes absolutely no sense. Old Mcdonald could see that "lavender tinted face paint" is absolutely not universal and literally would only work on a very small percentage of people. The fact that she was telling her experience with it, and her truth towarda what the blush was NOT giving, she shouldn't be under fire for it Also the fact that YSL still hasnt said anything about this crap, and doctored photos, and used women of color as human gaslights is disgusting. I won't even use a damn sample from YSL idc what it is. It's shameful as a brand in 2024!

I follow medium skinned creators because I love beauty content and there’s talented artists out there. The micro aggressions pivot and turn into blatant racism. It’s almost like you shouldn’t air your grievances because you should just be grateful someone throws you a bone. Brands really, REALLY need to stop advertising that their blushes, lipsticks or other complexion products are "universal". I think such things don't actually exist. Human beings come in too many different shades and too many different undertones for one product to work for ALL of them. And that's okay. I also get the feeling that certain brands don't really don't want to take the time to find shades that works with different skintones, but still want to appear to be "inclusive", cue the deceptive marketing. But when people like Ohemaa point out that they, as dark skinned women can't use this product, they don't want to admit the truth, so that's why she and others get comments like "You're using the product wrong!". Just another day in the life of a Black woman.

I really really really REALLY need people to stop attacking POC creators for calling out brands and actually listening to what they are saying. They are saying that these brands need to work on making products for EVERYONE,not just them. Jackie Aina famously said that there should be an ultra light, AND an ultra dark. idk wtf YSL were thinking advertising any of those blushes as universal. like, did they think no one would notice? they, at best, underestimated how many POCs are looking into their brand and, at worst (and imo almost surely), just don't care and will say whatever to sell their products. both options are gross and the hate that Golloria got for all of this is idiotic. she was just stating facts.

also i can't help but be mad at the fact that they're making so much money on these blushes anyway because this went 'viral.' i swear these companies will lean into controversies because they know people will buy their products for content and other companies see that and follow suit. i hope people boycott YSL like they did Youthforia.
@krisdiane
@krisdiane Ай бұрын
Third option - they did this on purpose in order to make theirs line of blushes go viral. Most of those shades wouldn't even work on me, and that tells me that they intentionally made a line of blushes that would exclude anyone of color from wearing them AND they falsely advertised them as being dark skin friendly and *sent them to dark skinned women* to create backlash and conversation about their blushes. It's sickening. 😔

I have A LOT to say about this. Jackie Aina talked about how KZbin had stopped doing initiatives that placed Black beauty influencers and other content creators in the forefront. I noticed that my algorithms do not reflect what I mostly watch which is Black beauty influencers. I have to search for their content. The majority of the content I see made by white influencers and it’s not always beauty. This slow trickle backwards started around the same time Affirmative Action was overturned. Affirmative Action was not just for Black Americans. It was for ALL marginalized peoples: women, Latinos, Asians, LGBTQ+, differently abled, etc. In this country, corporations response to inclusivity when it is popular. When it is not, they go back to what they were doing because their intentions were never to be inclusive. Their intentions was to only get our Black dollars for as long as they could until our popularity dies down. This is something I have seen happen time and time again in all of my 46 years of life. This isn’t our fault. This is the fault of the social construct that “they” want to maintain. Black beauty influencers should not have to consistently make videos discussing this topic. We should not have to demand equality and inclusivity every waking day of our lives. The racial power structure in this country needs to be broken because we are literally fighting uphill battles and it is exhausting.

Everything you said and the fact that reviewing is not the same as complaining. It's a content creators job to review and tell if the product works on them or not and why. That's not complaining. . . Ppl don't think and just love dislike us. I followed you to support another black woman, you're gorgeous, love your voice, you do show multiple ways to use a product, you usually show every color, and I trust your opinion. I really like that you show every color because I am lighter skinned. Desi Perkins, itsmyrayeraye, and Sabina Hannan on here are a few of my shade references. As a lighter woman, it was frustrating having to explain to other black women that even I couldn't find make up that fit me 5-10 yrs ago. The dark colors back then were made for tanned Europeans, not lighter skinned Melaninated women with warm undertones. Even now it's still difficult due to the weird undertones. Only two of those would have worked for me. These ppl don't like what melaninated creators have to say because they are race biased. We should just stop supporting these companies all together, don't even tell them how to fix their products unless they pay for it. Great video.

I appreciate the honesty in your reviews for products. I'm not Black, not even close, but seeing the way so many formerly inclusive brands have gone off and idk cut costs, got lazy, don't care. Its depressing. You should be able to criticize a product for not being working for you without anyone trying to get you to bend over backwards to find ways it will. If a product doesn't work for you, it doesn't work. And that's not on you that's on the brand. Especially when they advertise it as being a universal "one size fits all" product. It really says a lot about the industry, and honestly the world a s whole right now that dark skinned people can't stand up for themselves and push for inclusivity without fragile brand fans clutching their pearls and blaming you for a product that wasn't made to work for you, for saying "hey actually this doesn't work". And it really, truly sucks to see that you and other dark skinned Black women have to deal with so much shit. We do need to be better.

It's so gross how companies, makeup or otherwise, think that it's ok to lie about their inclusivity just to sell products, or even do things poorly on purpose (rage bait basically) to get advertising for a product through controversy. It also doesn't help that company had so many chances to say "hey, these might be too light for part of the demographic we're trying to sell to" and either fix the product or advertising. The worst part is that the Internet eats up the controversy, which incentivises content creators to make content about it, which puts the brand in the spotlight, positively or negatively.

and the target of said ragebaiting is ALWAYS deeper skinned customers, mostly Black women - no one's pretending a product is paler than it actually is or a foundation range goes lighter than it actually does; it's always pretending things will work on deeper skin tones when the companies know damn well they won't. they want the money without having to actually do the work to be inclusive for deeper skin.

As you said, I watch beauty creators because I like to see what they say about formulations and the looks they create. That’s why I watch people from all over the world with a variety of skin tones. Skin tone doesn’t impact skin concerns, artistry, and lasting/irritating/etc formulas. I watch dark skin tone creators because I know if a product was intentionally created to look good on them, 1) it’s a company intentionally looking to include everyone in makeup and 2) I can use the product as well. Maybe I use a light hand rather than build up. But I know I’m cool with this product. By the way the Fenty Daiquiri Dip Blush was stunning on you. Absolutely stunning.

I am soooo glad you mentioned the darkskin statement many light/brown skin creators say in their videos. I’ve seen many light/brown skin creators say “this product on darkskin” in their videos. As a dark skin women (Ohemaa is my skin twin) it irritates me cuz it’s like bookie you’re not dark skin and in the Black community we know what dark skin is and looks like. It’s problematic.

I am a medium olive person but I follow you because I enjoy your videos and admire your makeup artistry. I also want to support brands who are doing the right thing - if a product’s shade range is marketed as universal, I want proof. I’m not giving my money to companies that flat out lie about their products. As an olive person, I know that not every product will have something suitable for me. And that’s ok. I’m also ok with having to customise products using blue and green pigment mixers. Just don’t f’ing lie! In this day and age, you are going to get found out!

The way you said this broke my heart. Keep in mind... I'm constantly enraged by how black women (specifically dark skinned black women) are treated. Since my childhood, I've been made extremely aware that people will treat us differently. It's sick that this happens so much that I am now desensitized to it all. I can't imagine that all that work that happened in the late 2010s just crumbled to getting back to this, but I think it's because people were just performing. They didn't really want to include us, but they saw the success of brands like fenty and wanted to benefit by jumping on the inclusivity band wagon.

This was such an intelligent and well-spoken video, Ohema. It was like watching a deductive argument in a debate. You left no holes in your logic. I wish people could see racism for what it is. At this point it feels like everyone is tired of even asking for brands to be inclusive, and literally the bare minimum is don't lie to us. The bar is on the ground and we're literally just talking about makeup.

Hi Ohemaa I have been in the beauty industry for over 35 years and have worked with darker skinned clients who were fed up with finding a liquid blush they loved but not being able to wear it because of the white cast due to the white base they use. So what I would do and this kind of made it fun, is take a little bit of moisturizer that dries down really well so we can thin the consistency down and make it blend really well, we would start with the concealer I used on them so we had a base to start with adding a tiny bit of the moisturizer and get out my eyeshadow palettes & sometimes my powder blushes we would try to recreate the liquid blush shade. You can use a shade lighter concealer if you want a brighter color but it works really well & you can even add in some highlighter to make it a shimmer blush. Right now I actually like to add in physicians formula glow pressed powder it adds a nice little lit from within glow. I'm appalled at these blush shades and wouldn't wear any of them myself and I'm on the fairest shade range of the scale. Every person should be allowed to wear any makeup they want and feel beautiful in it. I know Physicians Formula has a big problem with their inclusiveness but I can't find another bronzing drop that works on my sensitive skin & I fell in love with their glow powder and mineral powder it works for me & it's so hard to find those key formulas that just click with your skin you know. I really hope things change in the future but I encourage people to not rely on the big companies to finally create those shades you've been waiting for...create them for yourself! If you don't like liquid blushes you can take a cream foundation that's a shade or 2 lighter than your skin tone and start mixing in eyeshadow or even a little lipstick as long as it's a matte lipstick in it! You can make a cream blush in any shade you want. I know it's not about that but until they give you more options I wanted to give you some ideas. I love your channel and highly regard your opinions! Thank you!

Ohemaa please know your loved and never change I am not dark skinned but am mixed POC I saw the rise and fall of the big beauty gurus that were WHITE. I never saw when under their spell and the product was LITERALLY smashed, binned , verbally trashed and stated as non approved by creators they were loved tge more for it " uh uh honey this is trash" can you imagine a dark skinned creator taking the blush and burning or throwing it in the bin, the hate they would get of not having this conversation with dignity and respect and how dare people question a persons individual preference. I am always amazed as a tan skinned woman with blue eyes the fact I am mixing foundation shades in the year of the lord 2024. I live in the uk I learned colour theory as I was a SFX make up creator until a stalker of a decade attacked me by finding me on line after 5 years of me leaving a job as a retail pharmacist and then processed to leak photo shopped pictures of my sfx make up face on the bodies of unclothed people, then he tried to kidnap me and has left me with broken bones and spirit. The reason I found my happy place until I had to take every down and become invisible was because of hate from men and women who were of colour , i tried the normal thing of product reviews and I got comments saying that I must be wrong with use or it was ok on so and so they are your skin colour. I took that product and used it as a sfx look, so I did it from a place of anger. Nobody knew that my undertone changed due to undiagnosed cancer and a vitamin deficiency. After i lost my safe space i looked for creators who were like you honest and true as watching other lead me into buying a makeup collection that is going to waste of more that $5000 skincare too. I am grieving and in pain and frankly disappointed with the people who look like me ripping a creator down for a make up opinion. As a survivor of CA and SA and DV a army medic and a civilian nurse and relief worker grieving for my support system I failed to save and passed in my arms, we dragged creators over a blush? As many have been disappointments due to their greed of PR, I would have loved to have gotten PR its on my bucket list as I love the packaging. I have seen more poc poc creators buying items than ones who get PR we have talented individuals on Instagram who cater to women of a certain age regardless of skin colour and u tube creators and they hardly get PR where I have seen creators who have products spilling out of hallways and storage and they're throwing away stuff as it missed the deadline or has gone bad. Creators really be up hear lying to get brand deals and trips, and to me creators who say i was sent this but its not for my and then bring in a person a friend who it may be for or just stating the facts is deeply honourable. Never change and your beautiful as well as the young lady who is being forced to carry and be a punching bag for a liquid blush. You can never buy you integrity back your trust or your honour or time. Thank you for always being diplomatic classy and a advocate. 💛🇬🇧 sorry I am unsure of my life span and wanted to try and state my voice not for sympathy but for a different perspectives as only we know why we chose to enter a beauty space that started to cater to us late in the game, as a model I was avoided by MUAs and may used bronzer to darken my makeup foundation and scar cover up make up that medical grade and it was used all over my body on photoshoots and no non were bikini or swimwear and yes they would lighten my skin tone especially when I would do shoots in india. Colorism is real and hear and from day one I was told " ahhh your eyes are beautiful its a shame ur so dark , u should wash ur daughter in goats milk and yogurt " my mum told them to f off politely and told me I was beautiful and my make up covered my beauty. I don't type this for sympathy but as a person never accepted by the family and friends who i grew up with being mixed race and the white folk who never accepted me so I was always out of place until the internet at 25. God bless

At this point, I am convinced they do this on purpose, to shamelessly cause rage bait and have their products talked about. So despicable from such a big brand 😒 And yes, some ppl are always so quick to criticize and dismiss any black / dark skin influencers for stating straight facts... just because their fave brands got pointed out as being non-inclusive (on top of putting out false advertisements) You're right, some brands are falling back into their old habits of not giving a shit about being inclusive. Tho I agree that brands make ads that are misleading and this is a marketing fail, I also want to point out another problem. I am opposite of the spectrum, any lightest shade of the high end brands are too dark for me. They don’t cater to my skintone, mostly blushes are disaster it is like putting color on white paper everything is looking like I have taken a beating. Highlighters are impossible, they look like dirty streak on my skin, especially gold toned ones. I have to use eyeshadow. Every foundation I use, I have to mix mac studio face and body in white color to match my tone. Otherwise my face will look darken than my neck. But because I am a minority in beauty industry, most of the products that actually work for me (like that lavender blush for example) get discontinued because noone really buys it. Whenever something matches me, people get frusturated about the product saying “who uses this?!” I use it sister. Being very light is hard and no brand is really inclusive.

if a brand markets a certain product of theirs as a specific certain thing, like "good for x people" or "you can use it x way", then the products should be able to keep that promise. if not, the brand deserves to be called out. i think people should open their eyes and try and at least sometimes, either investigate before you criticize or just shush, because otherwise, their comment can be seemed as false, unneeded, uncultured or hateful

As someone with dark skin, I rely on your product reviews to be honest and transparent. I understand that the beauty industry is driven by profit, which is acceptable in a capitalist society. However, it's crucial not to deceive or manipulate people with dark skin into spending their hard-earned money due to misleading marketing. I've wasted money on products because of their marketing tactics, such as enhanced lighting and exaggerated claims. This is why you and other content creators with dark skin are essential for holding brands accountable. It's disheartening to see some cosmetic brands moving away from inclusivity. All I can say is keep up the excellent work and don't stop. Thank you, from your forever fan.

The bases are like foundation on them! Really odd. I’m paler than pale and I don’t even think I could wear the lilac without it looking like concealer. As a sometime makeup artist, I would never use these on ANY client (and I’ve had people of every skin tone including East Asian, Egyptian, Iranian, and Sudanese people) because it just looks like coloured concealer. Really horrible, bizarre choice for a base.
@Mari-zq3gn

Every person in the beauty space, who wears makeup, who wears blush, lipstick, lip liner, understands colour theory. Regardless of skin tone, everyone has applied a specific product to their face and seen it mix with your base undertone to turn into a different shade, or swatched a lipstick on the back of their hand and had it look completely different on the lips. People who wear makeup experience colour theory thus understand colour theory. It's not ignorance, it's not naivete. It's just racism. YSL understands colour theory. They know what happens when you use white as a base for any liquid product. And they knew exactly what they were doing when they sent these blushes to dark-skinned creators...
