A neat, tidy (altho' I imagine, heavy) pen. The 'eye' on the cap is obviously a nod back to the days when a number of (smaller) fountain pens, manufactured in the thirties & forties, sported an eye loop for a chain or cord, & whilst I like the organic touches with the wooden case & cylindrical pen holder, it is rather cumbersome. Without doubt, a very interesting ethos to stand behind the pen, itself. I do like the whole concept that is offered, but for rapid note-taking, you'd spend longer opening the tube than you would writing.... Delightful presentation, Michael - I certainly think my wife would like it :)

Scrively nice to have you back Sir, i agree that is one very interesting pen indeed. But i would prefer a clip on the cap rather than the hole for a cord. I was wondering would a Kaweco Al Sport clip fit on the pen. As always thank you for another excellent review.

Thanks for your comment! Yeah, I am also more of a clip guy. But I am sure that they went for this peculiar design as part of the overall design strategy for this pen. A Kaweco clip will not fit, as the Y Studio is quite a bit slimmer.

物外 - the company name ystudio registered in Taiwan, meaning "something beyond this world" (?) which is a little ironic for a studio making things :-)

Since that phrase was initially from Buddhist's literature, I am sure it was initially used to describe something non-material wonderfulness, but I agree that this can be a playful interpretation that the studio intended to make awesome products.

Very interesting thought on material and non-material binaries. Thanks for sharing this! In some theories of Material Culture Studies - and in some cultures - , things can indeed have sort of a soul. So not that far off track.

Hey, ?If they bought me that pen without ink, what ink would you recommend to make it better for that pen

Iroshizuku (Pilot) inks are generally very good. Also Waterman inks. Pick any color you like :-)

I like those Ystudios. Are you also into chinese fountain pens? I recently got my first one and it's really cool. A Wing Sung 698 demonstrator piston filler with an interchangeable Pilot nib and a screw cap. For less than 20€... And it doesn't even feel that cheap.

Hugh Mungus: I love the Wing Sung 698. It is one of my most frequent every-day-carry pens. I have used it for over 6 months and with different inks. The pen is clearly as good or better than many $100 or higher price pens I own. For the price, you cannot go wrong. By the way, I have never adjusted the nib. I got a Koweco Art Sport for around $100, and I had to adjust the nib and flow before it wrote acceptably.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the pen. Yeah, the fine nib on mine is super nice too, but I might still buy a cheap Pilot with a broad nib, since i usually only use broads.

No, not really, to be honest. I used to buy some, but more in a reviewer interest of forming an opinion about them. I am personally more of a pen user than a collector, and I would never pick a Wing Sung or Jinhao over my Pelikan M400 or Lamy 2k. Therefore I simply have no use for these Chinese pens. But I understand their inexpensive appeal. And they are often quite good pens.

Well if I had an M400 and a L2K, I also doubt that I would use my other pens ^^. Thanks for replying

The are a lot of much better fountain pens for that price out there. Pilot makes the better ones. This is pure gimmick.
