I bought my Lamy Studio Imperial Blue in August 2024. Unfortunately, converter of that pen is malfunctioning after eight months.

I've had Sailor and Parker fountain pens, and I find that Pilot fountain pens offer a superior writing experience compared to other fountain pen brands.

Great video! I have the amber in medium and the black in bold. I typically keep Yama-Guri in my amber. I also like my 743 which has the same “15” nib in a converter pen instead of vacuum fill. Both models, 823 and 743, are great functioning pens.

I just don't need another fountain pen. I have my favorite, and a lot of others, so why would I buy something I don't need? But I love this one, and - just as my favorite pens - it's brass!! And I absolutely love how it opens and posts. No, I don't need it.... know I will own one soon haha.

Nice Review! I have this pen I think now for over a decade, I really like it. The mechanism is a bit vulnerable to dust and stuff. Some years ago, i got some sand in my Pico, I was able to clean it but since then the mechanism is a but weird. There‘s a specific pressure point to get it properly to open. If you just press it fully it does not open at al or not properly. So it‘s like a trick that the pen could only be opened by me which is kinda cool.

The MB 146 EF. But it’s the overall pen I like better. Nib-wise, I prefer the Pilot.

As a lefty over-writer, I have found that oblique dip pens work well for me. They give me enough space that my hand never thouches the ink. That said, I'm also having fun learning to write under-hand so that I can enjoy more fountain pens. Either way, its about learning to love the process for me.

@@Scrivelynotes I don't write on Tomoe River all day, but if you do a review of a fountain pen you should use a fountain pen friendly paper. There is a lot of cheap papers compatible with fountain pens like Oxford Optik or Rhodia.

Great review - I do enjoy hearing your thoughts on pens. Yes, these are a joy to write with. The nib is first rate for writing feel. I ran into a problem with my 823. I liked it so much I bought a Pilot 845 as well and that too gives 'no regrets'. Thanks for the review and wishing you a great 2025.

Thanks for a thorough review of this classic pen. By a coincidence, I also have the Amber version and routinely fill it with Edelstein Smoky Quartz (as with you my standard brown ink, but I fortunately bought a huge supply when this wonderful ink came out in 2017, so won't run out for many years). The 823 is also my standard rucksack pen, which I always carry around while travelling or walking. It is one of the most practical and elegant pens one can buy- once one gets used to the filling mechanism and the opening mechanism that allows ink to flow through from the reservoir to the main housing. Another advantage is that, when fully filled, the reservoir can hold c. 2.5 ml of ink. I fill my 823 only after several months...!

Thank you for your review. I realize this an older review, but running across this review is very timely (for me), I just purchased one of these and I am anxious to see it in hand. I have a good idea of the physical size of an A5 and A6 notebook, but sometimes different brands take a bit of creative license with the dimensions. To get a sense of scale, it would be great to see a Lamy Safari or 2000 along side, to get a visual anchor. I’ll look for your other reviews on inserts. Thanks again for your review!

TL,DR 823 : You pay 100% for the writing experience and the novel vac filler 845 : You pay 70% for the effort that has gone into making the pen (the whole urushi thing) and 30% for the writing experience. 823 is more of a writer's pen and 845 is more of a collector's pen from what I can gather

I think the pen is made by Vivapen. I have a Vivapen Classic that I bought for about $20 some years back. The moment you said Slovenia, and the curved nib, I thought, "huh." Once I saw the nib, I confirmed it. It's practically the same pen, except the one I have came with a converter and had an ink window, and was white. It's not bad, but the nib is one cool looking curve for sure. I also feel it's like an eagle's beak.

@kenshinhimura30144 ай бұрын
you forgot to mention that the pen also have an issue with the clip. If you put the pen on a think piece of cloth or a book cover or something that puts enough tension on the clip, the area of the metal leg that touches the plastic will create enough tension to crack the en d of the cap. I think Montblanc is no longer replacing or repairing the caps and that's why it's no longer produced.
@Scrivelynotes4 ай бұрын
I have not mentioned it since I never experienced it.

Clips were designed to go in shirt pockets, no over thick book covers. Use it the way it is intended and you should not have a problem.

High-priced rare wood can be difficult to source, not to mention the reject quantities during production. That said, I'd much rather buy their Classic in platinum plated Guilloche, or even sterling silver models for the price.

Went thought the same process when I purchased my M200, and actually gasped at how small it was out of the box. Probably a scientific reason for the disconnect. Between the brain knowing dimensions and the eye seeing. I bought the M200 on sale and found an M400 nib unit, also on sale. So I have a M200/400 for about $150 US less than a M400.
