In all honesty Duelist Genesis was appropriately named. From a MTG clone to a game with it's own identity, the beginning of the synchro era irrevocably changed Yu-Gi-Oh forever.

Agreed. Duelist Genesis is my favourite set of all time because Synchro changed not just the overall game tempo but also deckbuilding as a whole. Levels mattered now beyond tribute numbers and you had to incorporate differing levels depending on tuners you wanted to use so you could make the synchro monsters you wanted. It wasn’t perfectly timed for the comp scene as it made DAD decks have a natural evolution to silly levels of power BUT i also think it was a great example on how Synchro’s were changing the game. And for better or worse they are probably why Konami tried to replicate this energy with every new era having a new summoning mechanic and just never quite suceeding as capturing that essence.

​@synchrofanatic510 this is a great explanation- I do want to note that there is also the final and very important aspect of card advantage and strategy. Fusions were largely impractical unless they were cheated out bc they requested you to go -2 for a guy who probably wasn't that useful- synchros being more powerful and less demanding in that respect made it so that yugioh players had to develop a part of their brain to think about the game that way, which relates to the unique skill expression of the game.

@@nbassasin8092 Thats fair enough! Xyz made the extra deck more accessible for many decks and the materials being ammunition was certainly unique. I do think however the reason I don’t feel Xyz hit that high mark with me was because they changed deck building in a way that I don’t think was as interesting for the game. Their ease of accessibility also irked me as now you wouldn’t even need to consider tuners if you didn’t care about synchro’s, just 2 levels 4s, 3s or w/e and you’re good to go. That inherent lack of an innate restriction for their summoning made them too easy to get into and therefore once the more powerful xyz monsters started to appear began to dominate the game which you could say is a statement of their impact depending on perspective. But overall you could just play 2 level 4s and slap them together to make an any Xyz assuming it was generic whereas if you want a specific synchro you needed to make sure you had the correct levels on field to access that level pool AND ensure you adhered to the tuner/monster type attribute requirements. But thats just my take on them and i can defo understand why many people jumped in during XYZ era and stayed. Pendulums are their own beast and I think I consider more of a new main deck summoning mechanic as well as an extra deck one and they defo have had an impact considering Links were made probably just to nerf them. Links just suck but sadly are busted so sometimes you gotta play em!

I'll never forget how upset I was at Konami when I saw that DAD was a rare in the ocg and then months later they bumped it all the way to a secret rare back when sets had like 10 secrets per set and you could only get 1 per box.

yeah that's the reason why I don't see PTDN as up there with the best sets in terms of best product. almost all the admittedly great cards were high rares and you had to spend hundreds if not thousands to get them. that was the time when the game was as expensive as never before.

STRUCTURE DECK : DRAGONS COLLIDE was probably the first structure deck ever that changed the formula on how a structure deck was done until the moment it released. Previously, a structure was just a bunch of random staples and banned cards from sets that were now far behind their time, but now, a structure deck litterally turned into one of the better tier 1 decks to play in the meta

ABC deserves a spot in the "buy 3 and win" structure deck conversation. There was a small point in time where it was the top deck to be playing because nothing else could keep up with it. Sure other decks could beat it, but it gained a ludicrous amount of advantage so quickly, and with Terraforming at 3 and a bunch of other busted shit still out, it was crazy.

I think it's because it's new enough that people don't think of it when they're reminiscing about bygone sets. I think the newest product mentioned was the Albaz Structure, but that's memorable because it was a good Structure Deck after a string of poor ones. I do think it was a poor quality set though. The only things seeing much play from it after the gutting of the Ishizu cards is Swordsoul stuff.

the problem is it doesn't have a good end board especially going first. that "Dark Dragon Sychnro" lock on a lot of the monsters is very restrictive. But it gets to it's end board through like, any number of cards. Soul Resonator is full combo alone for god's sake. (NS Soul, search bone archfiend, special, send crimson resonator, to make soul LV2, synchro rising dragon for crimson, special 2 resonators, make your choice of massive synchro)

I had a used Battle City Duel Disk for a few years. It was so cool, it had a spinning function to set it from travel and Duel modes. My brother and I later got the 5Ds Yusei version of the disk. It was cool, a little larger than Battle City, didn't have a pop out slot for field spells like Battle City. My one complaint was the Velcro strap that made it itchy (at least there was a tab for you to grab to somewhat stabilize the disks)

While the original Duel Disk was classic, I have to give the gold standard for Duel Disks to the Yusei Duel Disk 2010. The 2010 version of this product ditched all gimmicks in return for pure function. This thing fit sleeves comfortably-50 in the deck and 30 in the grave!-had a super solid construction, five digit life totals, and slots for banished cards and your Extra Deck for the first time ever. And that’s not to mention that on top of that you got a Duelist Device which can track life totals, use dice, coin flips, and counters, and even had a microphone for whatever fucking reason, as well as five promo cards-Frozen Fitzgerald, Dark Diviner, Dark Flattop, Driven Daredevil, and motherfucking Blood Mefist. It’s thanks to this product that OCG copies of Blood Mefist are so cheap, and that at least gives you a way to own a budget version of a YCS prize card that has never been reprinted since. Since this product, the only Duel Disk that has been made better is the Proplica version which is more expensive and had a limited run. It is a crime that this thing was never brought stateside.

Totally not because I just finished watching History of 2011 but MAN was Legendary Collection 2 GX a goated set. It established the formula that the yearly tins would follow with the Mega Pack as a massive card set with many reprints, cards printed in different rarity with ones initially low end getting a rarity Bump and expensive cards (sometimes) being printed in a cheaper rarity. Thunder King Rai-Oh got it's first budget reprint in the set and I'm prettty sure this was the first set to give Super Poly a shiny print. Lot of things got shiny upgrades actually. Then Ra Yellow Mega Pack came later and made it better.

On the Rarity Collection I'll just say - I've returned this year to Yu-Gi-Oh (ok returned is a strong word, I started collecting again adn thinking and building a deck or two...not overly competitive but just to be able to play with someone eventually and got SpeedDuel sets and me and my GF have played a few times) and nothing has made me spend more than the Rarity Collection. I can't even explain it, in reality I just want 3 Pots of Prosperity, Baronne, TTT, I think Droplet is in it too and maybe one of each copy of Eldlich since I am building a Gold Daddy deck (because fuck the new decks with 20 min solo turns, we're playing old style Yu-Gi-Oh with 2 summons per turn maximum xD) and yet I've already bought 2 boxes and am likely to buy at least 1 more (couldn't get them from the courier since I had to travel out of town but monday I'm opening those bad boys and when I don't get one of the cards I need, we're going back to buying boxes bby! xD) So yeah...in the eyes to someone who's been out for tens of years this product looks massive! Honestly I think after I'm done buying it the only thing I'll be missing in my collection (that I really want) will be Chaos Angel. My Golden Daddy deck needs just one or two floodgates more and it's done, my Amazoness deck I think is done, I'll have to duel with it to see what it needs more atm ad after that I might have to look into a real competitive decka nd see what I can build with the cards I have (I guess something using Baronne since I'll be buying Rarity Collection boxes until I get him 100%) In contrast the previous set couldn't motivate me to spend a penny on it. I remember playing Battlin' Boxers when I returned to yu-gi-oh for a bit years ago but just a few oki cards for an ok deck didn't seem like a worthy investment. I like the idea of Vanquish Soul but I don't see a reason to buy boxes when all the crads I'll need are high rarity so I'll probably end up with more useless stuff than not and still not have a deck. Meanwhile with the Rarity Collection feels like every card you get is cool, even if not one you actually want. So you don't feel screwed by the luck draw.

I would argue that all booster sets should be counted as one product. Besuses this video is basically "what is the best set"
