Im going to be real, the last time I was into Yu-gi-oh was in 4th grade. Most kids had either a Yugi or Kaiba deck plus a couple booster packs, maybe 1 kid had a polymerization card everyone wanted for their purple monsters, and Yugi and kaiba were still dueling on that island. After like 20 years now I just picked up two of the 4 pack Retro booster packs box sets and I'm having a blast. If they reprinted those original decks id buy a set of each just to duel my friends old school style, paper play mat and all, no bs just back and forth like the original show. I really do enjoy your videos though because it brings me up to speed on just how much the game has changed since I last remembered it. Goddamm.

Sadly the game can't live off of nostalgia for it's literal first year. I do wonder why people who are focused in on that specific period are so vocal within the community vs other games. Like I played yugioh for 3 or 4 years starting with it's north American launch, I am not nostalgic for launch decks and legend of blue eyes, many of those cards were pack filler. Zombie support was my thing big Vampire Genesis player back in the day lol. I'm not a sweaty player I don't goto locals for ygo but most of my tcg experience is at the pub with friends, that's been a great social environment for all sorts of decks.

I'd love a reprint of the original structure decks (dragons roar, blazing inferno, zombie madness etc). IMO they were the perfect level of complexity for a casual player to have fun and play with strategy. I love the OG yugi and kaiba decks but they didn't make sense in terms of card synergy.

For me, your video about midcore players (and the lack of support) describes exactly why I got of the game. I would love to play some fun, modern but non-meta decks in a casual way but creating that kind of format would be difficult to balance I think.

If they were to revisit the DM era, I'd hope it would take place after the dark side of dimensions story, and focus on Yugi and Kaiba with their modernised decks, introducing new reimaginings of old decks with all the new summoning mechanics of modern Yugioh. I do love DM era stuff, but as much as I want those nostalgic monsters to be usable, the player base can only withstand so many retrains of old cards before I feel they will lose their charm. On the other hand, DM (battle city era and after) was easy to follow and understand rules. I feel like a "modern" anime that showcased the modern playstyle, would be borderline unwatchable for the majority of people. Long board set ups, handtraps galore, and 2-4 turn duels wouldn't be as marketable or appealing as the older 'I get maybe 2 monsters in a turn to make an extra deck monster and sit on that until my opponent figures out a way to destroy it' style of yugioh.

I'm still playing Yu-Gi-Oh!, but I'll always prefer old-school. It's just what I grew up with. I feel like now it's about who can combo off and have the most negates. And what I remember about old-school Yu-Gi-Oh! was actually both players playing. As for merchandise, I would like to see a diversity of monsters and characters.

My opinion as someone who got in because of the anime... I think there needs to be a balance, because even if we got a modern yugioh anime series.. it would be the most disconnected from the actual card game, compared to each other era. Turns take so long and decks are capable of so much now that there is no way that an anime would be able to even come close to mirroring it.

You're so right. I find it fascinating that the people who want a new Master Rule anime clearly didn't watch Vrains. And this is not a critique of Vrain's plot or writing but the actual duels just got to be too much. Soulburner vs Revolver was 2 full episodes of all of 5 turns. The guy that wrote the duels for all the shows admitted that Vrains was too hard and that was over 5 years ago. There is no way they could write duels for the current format. That's why we have Rush Duel shows.

​@7thHourFilms tbf 2017-2019,was uniquely bad about that, if yugioh made tear the standard way to play and every deck had multiple cards that "Our turned" the opponent on turn 0 it would be functional. Or you could have fast endboards like Kashtira/Horus of they go for main monsters pass with some other supports etc Snake eye format was uniquely bad, and this format is too not because decks build crazy endboards but because decks have a ton of in-between moves that serve as divergence points for combos and wouldn't be interesting to watch

I also think the people who make the card game would not want a new anime, either. They've gotten into a position where an archetype can consist of about 4-6 monsters, 2 spells and 1 trap and that's basically enough for the deck. Whether or not this is good game design is, well, that's a different discussion, but the point is that when making something that works for the anime you kinda do need to have a more varied deck just for the sake of novelty. You fall into "Blackwing Syndrome" where the deck has a billion cards but only about 8 are relevant.

Personally, we need a full on card game split between meta and legacy: competitive players can have the next big tournament sweeping decks like Snake-Eyes, Tearlaments and Kashtira, and nostalgic players can have support for retro decks like Millennium, Blue-Eyes and Cyber Dragons. Since Konami pretty much killed Speed Duels thanks to changing production from Europe to USA and banning any future Speed Duel cards from being used in EU tournaments, physical game players are pretty much stuck with Standard or nothing for playing the game at a table with someone else, and there's absolutely no chance Millennium is actually beating Snake-Eyes without incredibly rough bricking from the Snake-Eyes player - so actually having a legitimate divide in product to reflect the two major audiences might just help get retro fans back into the game, showing them that their old favourites actually get attention that's worth their time without forcing the players focused on getting a shot at Regionals or Worlds to play with padded gloves. That's probably not going to work out in practice, but it's something I can at least suggest.

With my experience working at a small business retro game store we now are selling yugioh cards and the cards that have been selling have been the nostalgia cards. Cards based of the anime. We have some modern cards, meta and staple cards and now one has cared about them.

I’d love to see sales metrics of nostalgic vs non-nostalgic products. From what I understand, competitive players aren’t going to spend all of their money on sealed product, when they can just outright buy the singles needed for their decks, and need all extra money to pay for events/travel/etc. However, I expect that most nostalgia customers will almost exclusively only buy nostalgic product, or products that are catered to nostalgia. I expect Konami is keeping their game alive through solely the purchases made by nostalgic customers, to subsidize the lack of sealed product sales from competitive players. When it comes to generic casual players, I think the venn diagram between them and nostalgic players are almost a full circle. I expect that casual players who still keep up with the game are a very small fraction of players. And since there is no widespread casual format, like Commander, I don’t think the Yu-Gi-Oh! casual scene will grow at all. So Konami has to depend on sales from customers who are nostalgic for a 25 year old version of the game.

My favourite Yugioh is 5d and i can't understand why is there still almost no structure or starter decks with Immortals, Mechlord emperors. Why can't all signers get their structure deck after this many years... I'm litteraly playing tcg because i made 5d decks from scrap, card by card. Recreating 5d duels is the only interesting thing to me, as i believe it is for many players(recreating decks and duels from duel monsters, gx, 5d). Yugioh should invest a lot in making new iconic anime like those 3 were bcs anime got 90% of people into this game and new generations need new iconic anime characters like Yugi, Yusei and new iconic cards like Dark Magician, Stardust Dragon, Blue eyes and so on. If not, at some point player base will drop significantly.

DM, Red-eyes, and Blue-eyes all look cool, but a lot of cards looks super cool. I got back into Yu Gi Oh back in 2017 towards the end of it. Last time I played this game was back in 2004. I only played “playground” format 😂 as they call it. I would’ve been like 6 years back then. Yu Gi Oh Duellinks is what got me back into this game. The early days of Duellinks were all about nostalgia. Just like in real life that mobile game eventually got every game mechanic that exists in the modern era of Yu Gi Oh. My experience of actual competitive Yu Gi Oh has been crazy! My mind was blown away when I first got back into the TCG. Nostalgia does work for me but I’m also excited to see what new cards come out. Yu Gi Oh is love and hate relationship 😂

The biggest thing most people miss about older Yu-Gi-Oh is that it took more turns to play even in the "modern" formats before around 2018. Condensing the game down to "Did you have the out in the opening hand?" Doesn't lead to a fun game play experience for a lot of casual players and takes months of studying to get caught up on all the details of the current competitive meta. More turns allow for more exciting build up, pay offs, and big plays as players fight for control of the board. The modern competitive format goes to turn 5 at most and older formats would go to at least turn 10-15. I think that's what other popular games have done well. Even with some power creep, most games have mechanics that physically limit how quickly a deck can win to at least give the opponent the semblance staying competitive even if they weren't going to win. For the average player, depowering the game a bit so that certain cards can't just "do everything" and give the game time to ramp up into a late game state would make it much more approachable and readable for people.

@@mohammedsarker5756 I mean, 90% of people playing anything but MTG or Pokemon are probably ex-Yu-Gi-Oh players. Games like Flesh and Blood, One Piece, and especially Elestrals are filled with them. I know because almost everyone at the locals for those games are all people I used to see at the Yu-Gi-Oh locals 5-10 years ago. Every year the Yu-Gi-Oh locals shrinks as it's pretty much just a play testing group for the few people trying to top the next YCS event. Anyone not that serious just loses every game and quits showing up. It's why I moved onto other games that were more accessible for casual players as I don't have the time to play all the time as an adult with a full time job.

Something I'd love to see, similar to the 2 player starter set, is structure decks themed around basically old characters vs new decks. So you'd have a pack that's a modern Yugi structure deck and a structure deck of a new Archtype. Do the same for Kaiba and Joey, etc. This was you can draw in older fans, while also exposing them to some newer decks and play styles.

There's also the fact that in 2002-2004 literally every kid in school was playing YuGiOh, the game is way smaller with younger kids, replaced by the digital world that came along in the meantime (roblox minecraft etc)

There are people who are interested in the Brand of yugioh but never got into yugioh outside of the bare minimum and they get upset at what the game is vs what it is in their head. Somebody who was into set 1 and starter decks and the anime and who wants to feel like they have a place in modern ygo should be able to play Rush Duel because its simple and their favorite characters are STRONG archetypes... BUT STILL ITS NOT PRINTED IN THE WEST AAAA. The day they release rush can't come soon enough!

The issue is Konami in the west not wanting to take a chance on physical Rush because they're scared it'll create a division among players or they'll all migrate to Rush. Beyond that, Speed is still popular in the TCG but Konami does absolute zero to promote it beyond ads on KZbin and if we're going off DL, it's very popular. The only players against this are those who are comfy with the disastrous state of the game 🤷🏾‍♂️

Do a Yugioh refresh of the anime as you said. But, make it based off of speed duel that's already there. Then, they can rerelease some of the sets but in non 1st edition. Keep the game simple as it is. Then, after get through all of the original and GX game, start a sequel anime. This anime will take place after with characters from the original and GX meeting one another. Then it ends with the duel bikes becoming a thing. PS I love speed duel.

I live in Brazil and, for me, the problem is just the price. I get it that nostalgia also affects a lot but it isn't near the big problem here, any remotely playable deck is too expensive for us. Even if you do a direct transfer, cards that are about 5 U$D in USA is about 7.50U$D here (but in R$). I live in a pretty big city (400+k people) and my locals can't even get 10 people constantly because in the few players there's not common sense to play chill decks, they play like it's YCS. I remember going to locals here when tenpai just released and there was 2 snake-eyes player and 1 tenpai player, while I was playing cyber dragon and there was a guy playing a merged version of the 2-player set, he simply went home in the middle of locals. I know cyber dragons have been bad in the meta for some time, but even cyber dragons are not cheap here.

Konamy must invest seriously in the animes they're going to release (Sky/Branded) what i saw generally is that Yugioh has interesting lores and archetypes that they can exploit them for real. I'm tired of fucking nostalgis DM shits, what i saw when OCG released the las Diabellstar lore cards all OCG user where chatting about lore and not the card use, that's a clear clue that people prefer lore based archetypes

I honestly do my own thing for yugioh and keep to anime format. As someone who builds anime deck every anime series gets supported. Problem is people don't pay attention. I honestly have no care for lore archetypes and won't watch that anime. Right now rush duels is what yugioh I'm keeping up with. If i got into yugioh today and didn't see the anime, i 100 percent would not have touched the game. Modern yugioh is boring and not fun.

Nostalgia is the only thing keeping me buying the merch. I don't like the new stuff. If anything I want more variety of the old stuff back. It's nice getting cool things like figures of the iconic monsters I would never have been able to have growing up or a model kit of the millinium puzzle something that blows my mind to own still. I don't care about the new, I don't like the direction the game took, I still play the old video games because I can't get that fix. If anything it's not catered to enough. You see Yugi and Kaiba on a set and instead of being able to pull most any of their cards in secret rare I' would be getting new cards I don't care about, want to play, or display. I would much rather just pay someone to make some oricas so I can fill a frame with cards to display than pay for packs I don't care about. At this point I'd love to play, the game has become less for me with how it's changed. I'm still a collector, but if they don't cater to nostalgia I'm out too. I'm reallyyyyy hoping their VR game takes us down that Nostalgia route starting with Duel Monsters and lets us explore all the way through the new content. But all of the iconic art and moments through all of the shows. If they do the VR game right that's the next big thing for me. I want that.

They resonate with the players or casual fans more so then idk stardust dragon even through stardust itself has its place in nostalga. At this point, I'd rather have a crossover anime than something new after VRAINS. Konami uses a new anime with new characters as an excuse for a new Master Rule and I don't want a new Master Rule unless it brings down the power level Links brought into the game (although I'd rather Konami just ban most modern handtraps). Bring back the old characters or make the only original character the main character and do something like Bond Beyond Time where they time travel to the other worlds. This could potentially give a lot of old characters a second chance as well as their cards getting reprints/new cards. And for goodness sakes, don't make it a long running series. Those are basically a dying breed. Just make a new 25 ep season every year or so. I think that would be the way to modernize old school yugioh, but I think getting new players back into the meta might be a lost cause.

i think that a good middle ground for nostalgia vs competitive is the BE structure deck, a strong deck based on a classic monster, that is cheap and (probably) even meta

Since 5D's, Vrains and to some extent Arc-V all had a major part of their identity be tied to an alternate play style of Yu-Gi-Oh, I think that if a return to the older card game were to happen, they should do it in accordance to the announcement of a tangible effort to make that lower power format that so many players are begging for and gets official support in events, and focus the anime on that format. Personally I adore giving it the name "Standard Format" so I'll be using it here. One reason this might be a stretch is that Japanese players do not like restrictions even if they are necessary. While MR4 had a sour response in the West, in Japan the reaction was so negative it put fear into Konami over the game's future. But I think that if an anime said, "This is an anime meant to act as an intermediary between people who are learning the game, Standard Format will not displace Advanced Format in events and product releases will remain designed for Advanced Format, so if you prefer Advanced Format, don't worry, that game is not changing." While Standard Format could just be a more aggressive banlist I'm actually fond of giving it some alterations to the core rules that give it more futureproofing and make it more distinct as a format. Nothing that would require making entirely different cards for the format but just things that reduce ideas that didn't age well, like make a rule change where all searches work like Adamancipators instead (excavate, do [thing] with target among the excavated, place rest on the bottom of the deck) - that's how a lot of modern TCGs are designing their own deck searching, since not only does it make the game have a more healthy level of variance, it also reduces the amount of time you need to spend shuffling.

I feel like if we just introduced Adamancipator style deck searching as a core rule in MR6, that alone would probably be enough to manage powercreep. Like, if you want to level out the game again, then you have to do one of two things: hit the power ceiling, or nerf one card starters. What your suggestion would do is create a trade-off between playing 40 cards for consistency and 60 cards for fitting in more tools, because if you want to play an archetype driven deck, you'd have to basically run potential bricks to ensure that your searches have a higher chance of going off. And realistically, what would happen is that Yugioh would return to a more toolbox style approach where people try to produce pile decks that rely heavily on GY recursion again to get around this restriction (which, while funni, is still a million times more healthy than the current game). It's personally not what i would want to do (i'd rather just introduce a more heavily restricted format with an adjusted F&L list, and that along with my legal deck master list is what I did for the homebrew format i'm designing), but that's just me. The only issue with your suggestion is that Konami would have to stick to this design philosophy and resist the temptation of printing a million link 1's that just special summon shit from the deck. They'd also have to avoid unbanning Beatrice, and while you say that would never happen: we got fucking Colossus off the list, anything could happen at this point. It'd also mean that Konami would need to print out a million new cards for decks that have just become simply unplayable due to this design change (which is debatably a problem). Something like Swordsoul would probably be a million times worse with this design change.

@@four-en-tee That's why I'd say it would mostly be a suggestion for an alternate format, but one that actually is designed as a supported format. It wouldn't require a restructuring of the game itself but it would shake up the game of the second format. It's kind of like a Highlander format style rule change (though Yugioh I don't think works very well with Highlander rules, while most decks are fine there are other decks that really are built around a single signature monster and a lot of those decks are really popular) where the rule change doesn't need to alter core product design. Allowing searching for a card directly named might be smart, though. Like White Stone of Legend, if you had to search your BEWD by excavation it would just make the card less playable. Or it would make it so that decks that aren't even particularly OP like Eldlich or Suship can get completely hamstringed by bad luck since their deck requires a very specifically named card to function and if they can't dig for it then they're SOL. Though this does lead to making "The Link 1 that Searches the Field Spell" a problem, maybe try out the format without this rule and see if those types of decks are doing okay and if they aren't then allow something like, "If it says a single, specific card as a search target, you can directly search that way, once per [Turn? Duel?]."

You unfortunately can’t get rid of the nostalgia because of how yu gi oh is set up. The barrier to entry for modern gameplay is way too high and there doesn’t exist a simpler format that can ease people into the game (I.e. draft or another format with a smaller card pool)……. Well there isn’t unless you play a retro format. But that’s the whole point, you basically have to start at the beginning to learn the game and in doing so you get attached to early cards instead of newer ones. Yu gi oh desperately needs a draft format or something similar to get people playing new cards without having to contend with a 10000 count card pool. I think Konami does a great job at handling nostalgia card-wise. I think most of the legacy support they've been doing like with Gladiator Beasts, Sharks, Blue-Eyes, etc. Has been fantastic. And the anime inspired archetypes and decks like Shining Sarc, Millennium, Metalmorph, and Gate Guardian has also been great, and overall well designed. Where i think they misuse nostalgia is in the marketing, like you said. They've kinda been doing the same thing with the tins these past 5 years, and yeah it's the 25th anniversary or whatever, but it can be misleading like you said. It also shows how little confidence they have in the newer identity of Yugioh to sell product. Even though if they put Diabellstar on ANY piece of merch it would sell out in a heartbeat. And with how much effort they put into stuff like Albaz, Diabellstar, Sky Striker, etc. it feels like all that potential is wasted cause they can't make that leap of faith that the community will vibe with them embracing the modern identity. You saw how excited everyone got for Chronicles, and most of that wasn't even legacy characters. They just need to strike a balance and have more confidence in the modern characters that they've worked so hard to be fan favorites. I can assure Konami people WILL buy a tin or merch with Raye, Mirrorjade, or even a Centur-Ion on it!

The thing is that a large very vocal part of the community hates that dm nostalgia is always feature in products, but at the same time I believe those products sell amazingly well cause of the larger non vocal part of the comunity that are really happy to get some yugi/kaiba stuff, so it makes sense. tho I would apretiate more love for the other series, but I dont mind the dm nostalgia, the one thing that I would love for the support for these decks is to be better, like they did with yubel or BEWD, cause for example dark magician has a lot of support but the deck is still awful, same with heroes, the most supported archetype in the game yet its been years since it was a top tier deck, that doesnt really makes sense to me

Nostalgia will always have a place and a purpose, but it should never be the driving force of a living product. I played a lot back in the GOAT format years and started to fall off the game around the time 4Kids was dubbing GX. Having gotten back into the game over the past couple of years and really diving into it, I find the legacy support for DM cards and retrains of old vanilla monsters really fun. I think they can serve as an excellent gateway for getting back into the game for people who fell off of it around the same time as me. Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes, and Red-Eyes can be fantastic beginner decks to learn the pace of the game today and refamiliarize yourself with the core rules. They all take advantage of the expanded play patterns available in the modern format without going so far ahead of what feels reasonable. That's where I feel the nostalgia printings should be placed, as a beginner's product to teach the game. Every now and then, if something turns out to be relevant in a surprising meta way? Well, that's just a bonus! But Konami should also push the other more complex archetypes more beyond just making them flashy and calling it a day. The Chronicles mini-series is a step towards what a lot of us have been wanting and will help other players who picked up the game because of the show find more decks to try out. One of my friends has been trying to get back into the game recently and she started with a Dark Magician deck. Since then, I've turned her on to the Sky Striker cards and Raye's story and she instantly gravitated towards the deck. Increasing the exposure to the worlds and storylines they're clearly putting some effort into building behind these cards can *only* be a net positive for the game as a whole.

I dropped off YGO sometime around the beginning of 5Ds. I liked what I'd seen so far! (and for sure remember the LittleKuriboh memes)... I just sort of drifted away from it, and in retrospect, I realized just how much the anime did for me in terms of kindling my interest in the game. I'm a little torn on nostalgia. On one hand, seeing familiar cards makes me think of the "good ol' days", y'know, feeling nostalgic. On the OTHER hand, I do sometimes look at a release or another and go "really? ANOTHER Yugi and Kaiba deck? Why won't they just move on??" Thing is, going as far back as the GX era, I believed that we were going to start to move away from Yugi, Kaiba, and the old YGO cast generally, and we kinda... DID do that for a bit? But it wasn't long before we were going back to the good ol' Dark Magician/BEWD support/Yugi-Kaiba decks. I think that nostalgia is fine, but personally I do not like how often Konami uses it. Feels like it loses its impact if it's too frequent, which in my opinion, it is.

I guess I see things from a different perspective. I loved yugioh as a kid in the early 00’s. Haven’t followed the series much since. Because of this long gap in interest, the modern franchise seems very overwhelming and unforgiving. So it’s nice to see things I remember from 2003 still have relevance to the series. If it weren’t for the 25th anniversary re-release sets of LOB, MRD, etc I wouldn’t be collecting cards nor watching yugioh content.

Dear god, I'll take any new anime (Master Rule, Rush, Lore) or no anime at all over a reboot of DM. Okay, now that that's out of my system: I get why they reuse Yugi and Kaiba. They sell to the elderly (of which I am kinda one). But there should be more of the other shows. Like there should probably be 4 structure decks put out in a year and 2 of them should be anime character focused. So we have the Blue-Eyes one next month which is Kaiba kinda. Blue-Eyes itself is probably as iconic if not more than Kaiba himself so that's 1. Then let's also do a Yuma/Utopia deck or a Leo/Morphtronic deck. Spread the love for the other shows! And then do another structure that's like Lightsworn legacy support and a brand new archetype structure. Make them all have staples, make them affordable, make them diverse in new and old content. Boom. That solves like half of YGO's problems. And then release Rush Duel so Paul is forced to watch peak and not disregard the current anime.

As a 5Ds zoomer I can kinda get where the DM heads are coming from (My favorite piece of Yu-Gi-Oh media is DSoD). The anime's give context and identity to the surrounding game, without one we're just left with the brutal reality of the tavern brawl that this game is. And that's fine, mostly. As a fighting game enthusiast I like me a good scramble every now and then. But without any other way to enjoy the current game other than...playing it (mostly Advanced) it's very easy to tire of it and just yearn to see people taking physical damage from holograms while screaming at the top of their lungs.

Before I say anything, I've long since left the current yugioh as one of my main games (one too many ash blossomed cards lmao). However for me personally, I say go back to the roots. I feel like what has happened here is an over-indulgence on power creep to sell more product on konami's part, rather than putting creativity first and foremost into card design. It's even started to affect legacy support; Like making an old boss monster legacy support a floodgate or omni-negate instead of something more unique because there's not really room anymore if they want to make it "viable". Call me "old-minded" but I honestly think the beginning of the end for my enjoyment of yugioh, were powerful handtraps. I think we got gas-lit into thinking that they were a "Necessary evil" to balance special summoning a billion times or setting up turn 1 omni-negate boards, but counterpoint, why not just... Not make and/or ban the cards that DO that? I'll tell you why, these new powerful handtraps were a band-aid fix, so it could allow konami to keep selling grossly power creeping cards, with the least commitment. We've reached a point where a card that lets you banish your opponents entire board aside from 1 card, is seen as a mid-tier option nowadays. That's gonna be a yikes from me bud. Look I'm not gonna say what's fun and what isn't, but if yugioh is gonna survive without becoming a zombie, konami has to REALLY crank up that "fun and enjoyment" factor. Look at what people are playing; Old formats, take inspiration from there. It's what I did for my own custom format, by looking at "Goat Format" and basically starting yugioh over from there to make a differently balanced game, and I gotta say, we had fun with it. I'm usually the kind of guy to keep moving forward, but I think yugioh is a rare exception to this mindset. It's like looking ourselves in the mirror almost.

Looking to OCG. TCG already mirrors a lot of recent banlist decisions in the OCG so reverting core sets to OCG style boxes and product would help entice the purchase of product from all players and not just whales. They can keep the banlist fairly similar but now they can save a lot of money not having to spend time or money commissioning art and game designers making tcg exclusive and dedicate more towards improving card text layout and mirror OCG's style of text organization.

Honestly, the OCG/TCG is beyond repair. And Rush Duel is repeating some core weaknesses that early yugioh had (such as tons of weird and useless bloat and filler cards). Just reboot Yugioh completely, even change up the rules somewhat more, give it a new anime featuring the changes and tying the monsters to cool characters... and most importantly: design it in a way that allows for a playable and meaningful draftable format. If there was a good playable yugioh draft format, i wouldn't touch another trading card game for the rest of my life.

I think it would be a great story to tell from a card game designer PoV. Most of the playerbase are not children, and part of OG Yugioh's appeal is the relative maturity compared to its competitors. You can have Easter Eggs like Trap Holes, Raigeki, trash mobs of Goblin Attack Force and Goblin Merchants selling Pots that act as lotteries. One way to do it could be like the way Fate/Grand Order's Protagonist summons Heroic Spirits that may or may not match the setting. So let's say we have Sanctuary in the Sky vs Pandemonium (kinda like Diablo?) since it was one of the core sets. The protag pulls Vic Viper, Draining Shield, Blade Knight, Swords of Concealing Light, Horus Lv6, MST, Burning Land, ground Collapse. How would they use this to navigate through the world? Take a look at Zenshu as an example of an isekai where the storyboarder falls into their own world they created.

Recently trimmed down my hoard. I tried to keep less. But I ended up keeping more than I had planned. Kept 2 small binders of favorites. 3 GOAT decks. 2 meme decks. And 4 of my normal decks. 1 large binder of just cards I like the art of. Still ended up setting aside several binders of holos and rares and other more valuable stuff I'll never play. Without having a current anime new players don't even have a tie-in show to get attatched to. They aren't printjng any new nostolgia espcially since Rush never made is to america. My favorite yugioh anime is 5D's and unsurprisingly my favorite mechanic is synchro summoning because of that.

My suggestion for the card game side, mainly. As there needs to be balance. At least(yearly) Nostalgia 1 alternative game stuff like speed(only structures/collections) or rush(can be packs as well as listed above) 1 alt format set, like to support Edison by making cards from those times more accessible. Kinda like retro pack. 1 starter to teach new people the game, and maybe every three years a new two player starter as we have never gotten something like that before. - new 2 or 3 structures. 1 being a more nostalgia one, like the new blue eyes the other two being more vs/lore style decks, like a fire kings vs atlantians release. 1 competitive card set, like the rarity collection 1-4. 2-4 deck build sets, they don’t have to all be meta. Probably 1 revamp, 1 new meta, 1 new fun(like that one archetype that has a burger as a card, in each set. 1 deck build sets with two meta contenders, and one deck that nearly perfectly counters them when paired with an old archetype, just for the lols. A running MD anime. It could possibly one merging the magic and tech sides of yugioh’s story since we have had 3 magic and 3 tech(yes I am counting Arc-V and zeXal as tech, since it was magic but based upon tech) so far. Edit: forgot the tins. 1 pack in being a nostalgia card. Perhaps one year the best friends get that slot, then the main antagonist, then rivals, then the protagonist and then go through the series. Tins would be a rarity collection but reversed, reprinting cards in common that only have high value prints, such as magia, and in demand cards as those other slots.

This isn't a yugioh exclusive problem. Idk why but all fandoms reach this issue at some point. In yugioh we have new fans versus "yugiboomers" in pokemon they have newer fans vs "Genwunners" people who are fans of Gen 1 pokemon. In power rangers newer fans tend to resent Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for some reason. Not sure why but every fandom eventually resents it's own history and where their franchise came from

The reason you see so many people craving the “good old” days of Yu-Gi-Oh is because the current game has effectively become a completely different card game which leans far more towards a hyper competitive crowd with turns that contain so many actions that can easily result in winning as early as turn 1. In comparison, the old way of playing allows for players to have a more reasonable chance of only winning but actually experiencing the game at the cost of complex play due to a clear limit on what cards can do. This is reflected in the anime where we go from wondering who would win a duel between Yugi and Kaiba versus Vrains where people wonder how someone like Soulburner ever lost a duel with the deck he was running or have a duel go past 3 turns. Even in the Dark Side of Dimensions, there was a clear limit established with what the new cards could do so while they were modern it didn’t feel so different that it was alienating to older fans but instead feeling like a natural progression with duels that made players think the game was enjoyable. I think Nostalgia in the form of an anime reboot or updating decks can help generate interest but it shouldn’t be solely relied on. Unlike say Ash Ketchum who’s story in theory could go on forever, Yugi and Kaiba among others in comparison always had an end point which means there’s only so many stories to create before it becomes disingenuous and uninteresting to the viewer. As for the card game, yeah as much as Konami could just sell GOAT/Edison Decks or install an old school game mode in Master Duel (I think they definitely should) if that happens then if all you want is those formats then basically there is nothing left to sell the player on which ultimately is bad for business since those formats have closed off card pools. Plus not everyone wants to stay in 2005 or 2010 forever. I think the best thing moving forward is a lower power format which leans more towards the casual crowd and commits to not crossing certain card design lines that cause the complains we see now with modern Yu-Gi-Oh. Also, ideally this would go with an anime reboot that in time becomes established with a completely new set of characters/stories to look forward to. Of course, this is best for people who want the game to still be inviting to new players but also welcoming to older players who still are open to playing with new cards and just people who think anything past Duel Monsters or GX is a mistake.

Honestly, numbers will show that old YGO does way better than the new lore archetypes they release, but I'd wager that's also because old YGO had a lot more time, and Konami actually lets old YGO shine, whereas they have no faith in their big lore archetype that releases once every several years. They don't push them at all, and the one thing people have been begging for, they're only now beginning to slowly dip their toes in the water. If Konami cooks with those OVA's, they will be able to attract that broader anime audience and get new blood in that way.

It doesn't help that Yugioh has a big issue in drawing in new players due to it's insane pricing and steep learning curve. Because of this the majority of Yugioh players are those who grew up with the original anime with Yugi and Kaiba and have play it since the beginning when the game was way more simplistic. As a result, this would only incentivize Konami even more to cater towards that crowd since nostalgia is such a very powerful tool.

Honestly I stopped playing because the money spent vs how much I play does not make sense. I would literally play a few times in a few months and the meta shifts so much that I’m always behind and in need of new cards. Then boom one of my cards got banned. Right now I own a pure ryzeal core, but ai refuse to buy fuwalos, purulia, and the Fiendsmith core because I would literally be burning a 500 bucks potentially. I think and evolving Ultimate Time Wizard format is the future of the game. Like deck with the strength of the best XYZ era decks, and they rotate in some Links or more powerful new cards every format while rotating out some powerful cards. Keeping the deck levels in check. People won’t be as pissed when a card gets hit, because the card may rotate back in. Something like a evolving Edison format of sort. For example vayu turbo, but maybe linkuriboh is allowed and helps you get rid of Vayu. Also, it is infinitely easier to teach someone UTW formats, like I’ve taught a few friends Edison and they love it. Introducing a few new cards every now and then shouldn’t be too hard and it keeps the format fresh.

Honestly it is pretty simple. Most people stopped watching Yugioh past GX. Numbers suggest by the time we got to Yuseis story viewrship had dropped by 70%. Past Yuseis story 95% of people cant name the protagonist. Honestly most of them sucked past Yusei anyways.

I think a big thing that makes the newer archetypes less interesting to me is that I feel the anime characters personalities bled into the archetypes quite a bit. Junk on its own is just cool robots, but in the context of the anime they're the cards nobody wanted who had their potential come to fruition because of Yusei. For me I play archetypes like Red Eyes etc. and it reminds me of the anime characters I enjoy. Kinda cheesy but I really feel the lack of the anime makes these newer archetypes feel so much less personal and a lot less interesting as actual monsters, even though older archetypes have objectively less going on. As for reboots, I think Yu-Gi-Oh could easily take the Cardfight Vanguard approach. Start over by printing new cards with a lower power level, and the old Yu-Gi-Oh continues as an eternal format. The new cards can still be used in Eternal YGO without the old cards affecting the new format. CFV also prints new sets around 3 times a year for the old format, so Eternal YGO players would still have new cards and archetypes to look forward to.

A reboot nearly killed vanguard and you ask for Yu-Gi-Oh reboot, it's either the reboot is roughly like vanguard And the main Yu-Gi-Oh dies because konmai neglecting it in favor for the reboot to succeed. Japanese players don't like radical changes to the game especially a reboot and Yu-Gi-Oh is live and die on ocg playerbase mood. Not happening unless it's completely different game like rush, even then rush is majority played by middle school students in Japan, it's still a niche and barely scratched the mainline Yu-Gi-Oh playerbase, Case example is OCG Singapore where Rush is legal and it's not sell well there.

@@r3zaful Not sure why you think it would kill Yugioh, Vanguard Premium and Standard are both really popular. V Premium died because it was simply not a good format, but standard has been doing really well and VG is on an upward trend. Old heads will always be upset when things change but they'll still have the old game to play which would still get new product, and the new format would make the game so much more accessible, which is something Yugioh desperately needs as its place as one of the "big 3" tcgs slowly falls. For those saying Rush duel is the same, it's not really. I enjoy rush duel but there's not really any combos and it's mostly a game of vanillas that just try to beat over each other. If they were to reboot the I think going back to an Edison era game speed would be perfect.

Absolutely love the original anime watched it a million times but the other one which I really loved was Zexal I was never good at the card game but the anime’s always pulled me in and we’re entertaining.

Actually..since we already have a lot of cards and different archetypes now, konami can start with lore format.. main deck should contain 75%-80% archetype.. and then the rest should be same type (for monsters) and any spell/trap.. This way, we won't lose the variety.. and archetypes won't lose some of their cards due to the ban list.. The reason for having the same type of monsters as tech/extender is a homage to the duel kingdom/battle city where decks are using the same type of monsters..

I don't mind the nostalgia stuff like DM but the issue is for all the dozens of support they get they still suck. Hero and Yubel can be at least viable while still being "anime decks". 5Ds onward don't need as much support as dm stuff. Archfiend, blackwing, so on can still hold their own to a degree so unless they retrain some stuff like Speed Warrior they can be fine for few years. Only exception is the pendulum guys but that mechanic as a whole flopped and I wouldn't be surprised if Konami never wants a pend deck to be meta again since it's such a turn off for people

To survive, yu-gi-oh needs an OFFICIAL. Low powered format, with a custom ban list, and maybe custom rule set (that still uses the same cards, and the rules are still 90% the same) but has a currated card pool/minor rule tweaks to allow for slower/more back and forth game play while still being able to introduce new cards as the times progress. Edison and Goat are great, but I completely understand that Konami can't make money off a format with a closed card pool, and honestly it would be nice to see a format like edison, in modern yugioh where any deck even if it won't win you a torunament on its own, can still feel fun and not insanely gapped by the better decks.

I also think this idea has merit, make a 'base set' of DM era cards, the iconic stuff, then release expansions of brand new cards and a few fan favorites from the traditional format and once it gets too complicated revert back to the base set and start again.
