i literally just ordered a snake eyes package like a week ago because i wanted to throw it in the tenpai deck i put together over the summer, I never even got to play the deck in person and now i won't. I wanted to have a tenpai deck because I happened to have a trident dragion from like 8 years ago and at the time it was the only really expensive card needed in the deck at the time and I was excited to finally have a competitive deck in all of the 16 years of playing yugioh. I get that it is what it is with the meta but its just sad

The problem isn’t Tenpai, the problem is that the game is at a point where a go-second deck _has_ to be designed like Tenpai (uninteractable one card combos that sometimes kill through Prosp) in order to be anything short of a meme that you only see on MD ladder like Numeron et Al.

It's infuriating that Konami straight up decides behind the scenes "this one or two decks WILL be the meta, anything else that even remotely competes will be hit to irrelevance. I will forever be angry Purrely got entirely killed super fast, but Ishizu-Tear and Kashtira were allowed to run rampant for so long. Putting Purrely cards to 2 is functionally the same as putting any other deck's main combo pieces to 1. And Purrely has counterplay: it typically ends on a single towers, while relying on a field spell and a continuous spell for recovery if the towers is removed, and the towers stops being a towers the second it has 4 or less materials on it. Meanwhile, Ishizu-Tear had literally zero counterplay and could full combo turn 0, and Kashtira could lock 9 zones by your first standby while also having a Macro Cosmos out. What they should do is: when new decks come out and the meta shifts, they should un-hit decks that were hit in the previous meta or two, to let them compete with the new decks. As in, have the new meta decks exist at full power and compete appropriately, but also unhit prior decks to allow them to also compete. Imagine formats where there's more than one or two viable top decks. Imagine if we had full power Purrely, and more meaningful unhits to Zoodiac, a less kneecapped Snake-Eyes, and a slightly less dead Ishizu-Tear into the current format. Wider variety of viable decks is objectively good for the game - retains older players who may not like the current meta decks, encourages newer players with more choice, reduced feelsbad when your pet deck got powercrept the next format and/or got kneecapped and never got time in the spotlight.

There is some context to this: The guy has only really played anime themed decks like Heroes and couldn't afford to pick up things that were often meta because of their price point. Instead he'd just pick up staples after reprints made them less expensive and play whatever he could, like Swordsoul post reprints. The one time he decided to take the plunge and play Tiered was with Superheavy Samurai because of how low rarity the core was and we all know what happened with that. This year he hasn't played as much since the top decks were out of his budget but was looking to build Tenpai for the same reason as SHS and well history just happened to repeat once again. Additional context: we're Canadian and buying cards from sellers in the US is expensive. At the time of this post 1 CAD = .71 USD so getting chase cards from outside the country gets real expensive real quick.

Also drawing blaster would be another brick in hand I think. The main issue is kaimen at 1 which is rough. Furo can bring it back to be used for a second time but it can only bring back on your opponents end phase. Which is insanely bad cuz if they have something to pop furo, ur shit outta luck.

I'm sad Tenpai got killed, because it's a budget deck. Like, think about it, you can buy the core for easily under $50, and fill out with a bunch of handtraps and board breakers from the various reprint sets, and boom, you were set for the basics. Now it's barely worth playing since you'd have to go through hoops to have any sort of grind game. I suppose you could try like playing Dragon Rulers as a diet Tenpai, using the Odd-Eyes Rebellion line for OTKs, but man, this really feels bad for the budget warriors.

I just don't think YGO randomly needs to be order of magnitudes more expensive than other tcg's secondary markets. I also disagree with secret rares, which is a standard rarity, need to pay for the box. A special rarity could definitely pay for boxes and then some but I do think it is a bit crazy for a standard secret rare to be required to equate to a value of a booster box, like the other cards straight up don't matter. I feel like the players who buy the product are complicit, either willingly or unknowingly, in the inflated prices of these standard rarity cards. Only collectors genuinely care about special rarities like starlight, ghost rare, etc. We know they are going to reprint cards. It is necessary for companies to do so. But that doesn't really excuse the reason on why they are so damn expensive just for being a good card like how S:P Little knight or Baronne de fleur were when they first hopped on the scene. Nowadays you can get them for cheap. But if someone wants to play the format of today. They have to hope that for some reason a deck they want to play with doesn't happen to have a card that is shy of a hundred dollars in it just because.

@@Altares_V I've read your response and all I can say that there isn't a point in arguing. This isn't about feels, it's market demand vs market supply. Math, data, easily observable. You can claim that the US market is somewhat manipulated by buyouts, but if you compare things to the EU Cardmarket, you'll notice the trends are often similar without them as well. It isn't true that only collectors care about rarities. There is not need to excuse anything. Supply & demand. If 1 box has 2 secret rares on average, and 1 box costs 60-80€, those secret rares have to make up the majority of the value. If there are 10 secret rares in a box, 1 which EVERY player needs and the rest are mediocre, you'll have to pay the box price or more for a single card. Sucks, but it's math not some conspiracy on players part. It's just math.

Tenpai wouldn't be so bad if the Boss monster didn't make it impossible to respond. Summon all the babies, make the boss... game over, literally nothing you can do because game mechanics. Oh you tried to play the game properly... too bad. Also summon 1 monster go to battle phase, effect effect effect, wow what an interactive and fun deck. Tenpai was just the tester deck. We will see another Tenpai like archetype in the future and they will be even more broken. But at that point we will have cards that can actually respond to them, and not be forced to have the few cards that can stop them now.

I swear I'm convinced people who make the bulk of banlist complaints do not actually play this game. Someone will go "this banlist mid" like I'm sorry you clearly have not been to a regional and 3-4 of your 8 rounds are against Tenpai. Heck! 2 regionals ago I played 3 tenpai, 3 snake eye azamina, and Rescue ACE. All of them are dead now. And as someone who DID play Yubel, 1 phantom is a hit because it means you can't use 1 as handtrap insulation and 1 as an interruption. God forbid you need 1 as an extender body. And like the memes, Kashtira Unicorn does just annihilate it. It's a good list. People are unreal.

@@ThisisKyle no but phantom of yubel being at one does make the deck more difficult to pilot since you can't use phantom as an end board piece and an extender

​@@ThisisKyleIt's still good, phantom to 1 makes a difference (lotus 1 card is weaker, you need to recycle phantom if you need it for a handtrap etc), but it's still got a crazy amount of starters and the capacity to make unbreakable boards

I do agree in terms of game balance it's a good list, but that's not the only axis we're working on. There is a trend of cheaper decks being hot much faster and harder than the expensive ones, and tenpai is another example of this for better or worse.

I disagree to an extent. Just like what farfa said even in card games with rotation some decks last for 2 years. Tenpai didn't even last for a year. Its just unfair to the people who bought it.

Problem is this is just another Halq situation: there's a million and five possible targets, and every time any are banned people will just move to the next on that list. Floodgates should be banned too, but not in a Halq way; they are deserving of it in their own right, not by the sins of another.
