Certain monster effects can also be psuedo SS4, like the Borrelx Dragon(s) Quick Effects and Access Codetalker SS1 Effect Activations. You can negate their summons and negate their effects [before they can trigger them, but once they stick on the field and their effect is used, that's it unless a continuous effect is in play that would gum up the works.
@matthewkuscienko46163 жыл бұрын
I feel as though the term "spell speed 4" is part of the reason why people get confused about spell speeds: if it well and truly WAS in fact tied into spell speeds, then those cards would be able to respond to anything in the game, including counter traps. For this reason, I feel that it would be more accurate (and also less confusing) to give them a different name that would better explain that they cannot have any effects chained to their activation. The thing about spell speeds is that if you are able to respond with the appropriate card, you can chain it, which isn't the case at all with quote on quote "spell speed 4" cards

One thing to keep in mind is that, if the card’s effect/description says anything that contradicts what he says in the video about Spell Speeds, the effects overrule game mechanics. For example, Curse of Fiend states that it can only be activated during the Standby Phase of your turn, but it is a Normal Spell Card, which is Spell Speed 1 and, therefore, can normally only be activated during your Main Phase. However, since Curse of Fiend specifically says it can (or, really, can only) be activated during your Standby Phase, that effect takes priority over the rule that says you can only manually activate Spell Speed 1 cards/effects during your own Main Phase 1 or Main Phase 2. As a side note, in the early days of Yu-gi-oh!, it used to be that Curse of Fiend could be activated from your hand during your Standby Phase (similar to a Quick-Play Spell Card), but later, there was an official ruling that states that Curse of Fiend must be Set face-down before the end of your Standby Phase to activate it, making it more like a Normal Trap Card that can be activated the turn it is Set. Also, nowadays, to get something similar, cards nowadays state that they must be activated at the start of your Main Phase 1 to get the same desired outcome: basically, you can’t do anything else before activating it. Another example would be the several cards that specifically state that they can (or must) be activated during the Damage Step ignoring the rule that prevents most cards from being activated during the Damage Step. Another thing to note is that every Spell Speed 3 card can only be activated in response to an attack or Summon or as part of a Chain. Technically, that’s not really a rule; it’s just that every single Counter Trap Card has a condition in the effect description that means it can only be activated in response to something, and none of them include change of phases or Setting a Spell/Trap Card. One thing omitted from the video is activating a Pendulum Monster by playing it in a Pendulum Zone from your hand. It works just like any Continuous Spell Card in that regard, so they’re Spell Speed 1. Also, while not explicitly in the rules, while _activating_ a Continuous Spell Card, Equip Spell Card, or Field Spell Card from your hand to the field or from face-down on the field to face-up or playing a Pendulum Monster from your hand to a Pendulum Zone is Spell Speed 1, while activating a Continuous Trap Card is Spell Speed 2, the effective Spell Speed of their _effects_ that activate while they’re on the field (rather than the activation of the cards themselves) are more complicated (this includes the Pendulum effects of a Pendulum Monster). Generally, it follows the same rules as Monster effects: if it says “during either player’s turn”, “during your opponent’s turn”, and/or “(Quick Effect)”, it’s effectively Spell Speed 2, but otherwise, it’s effectively Spell Speed 1. Also, if a monster has an effect that allows it to be Summoned in a non-traditional way (like “Can be [Special/Normal/Tribute] Summoned by…”, “Must first be Summoned by…”, or “Can only be Summoned by…”, those effects don’t have a Spell Speed at all; they are simply a Summon and are treated as such, not the activation of a card or its effect(s). The same goes for performing a Pendulum Summon, Synchro Summon, Xyz Summon, or Link Summon, or doing a so-called “Contact Fusion” to Summon a Fusion Monster without activating a Spell or Trap Card or using the effect of a Monster in your hand, GY, or field, as well as any Normal Summon or Set, including Tribute Summon. The Summon doesn’t technically have a Spell Speed, nor is it treated like activating a card or activating an effect. You can still activate cards and effects in response to them as if they were Spell Speed 1 (or Spell Speed 2 if it says the Summon can be done on your opponent’s turn or either turn or says it’s a Quick Effect), and, outside of those other conditions, when you can perform those Summons largely follows the same rules as Spell Speed 1 cards and effects, but strictly speaking, they aren’t card effects or activating a card, so they don’t have a Spell Speed, just like how Setting a card, Flip Summoning a card, or changing a monster’s battle position aren’t considered to be card effects or activations but have the same restrictions as Spell Speed 1 cards as to when you can do them. Finally, there is an order for priority as to who can try to do anything first. In the case of an open board state, the turn player gets priority, meaning that the other person has to allow the turn player to (try to) perform an action (activate a Spell Card or Pendulum Monster-as-a-Spell-Card from the hand, (attempt to) perform a Normal Summon/Set, Flip Summon a monster, activate a Set Spell or Trap, activate an effect of a card they control or in their hand or GY, Set a Spell or Trap Card, perform a nonstandard Summon, perform a Synchro, Xyz, Link, or Pendulum Summon, attack (during the Battle Phase), change a monster’s battle position, declare that the phase will end, or (during the Draw Phase) perform the normal draw at the start of their turn). Once an action is performed, the opponent gets priority to respond to that action with a Spell Speed 2 or higher effect first before the turn player can activate a card in response to their own card. When either player starts or adds a new card to a chain, the other player gets priority to chain a new card or effect first. Basically, turn player gets the first shot to do anything, and if player A does something, player B gets the opportunity to respond to it before player A can respond to their own action. (Though, as noted in the video, in the case of simultaneous activations for a Flip or triggered effect, the turn player’s mandatory effects take priority, followed by the other player’s mandatory effects, then the turn player’s optional effects, then the other player’s optional effects. You’ll know it’s optional if it says “can” or “may” or something to that effect; it’s mandatory otherwise.)

@matthewkuscienko46163 жыл бұрын
@@kaiserdragon7233 That's true, but it's also part of the reason why so many people think that duelists in the series early on are "breaking the rules" of the game. Because the game was originally not planned to be sold as an actual real life trading card game, there were certain cards that were altered when the game was finally printed to be sold in stores. As a result of this, a lot of people who mainly watched the anime probably had at least somewhat of an understanding of how the game worked, didn't fully understand the rules of the game due to there being many instances where certain things are either not explained as well as they should be or otherwise be changed to work differently in the anime from how the same card would work in real life, with some examples from duelist kingdom including: *Mystical Elf having an effect to increase the attack points of Blue Eyes White Dragon by the same amount as her own (seen in the duel versus "ghost" Kaiba) *Flame Swordsman being able to defeat Rex Raptor's dinosaur type monsters due to his cards apparently being weak to fire * Bandit Keith's machine type monsters being immune to the attacks of monsters if they used magic to fight in some way (regardless of whether or not they are spellcaster types) *Any time Yugi plays Catapult Turtle in duelist kingdom, such as when he used it to destroy the flotation ring of the castle of dark illusion in the duel against Panik or when he used it to destroy Mirror Wall in his duel against Mai

In regards to Spell Speed 4, there are cards that can enable other cards to be Spell Speed 4 or have Spell Speed 4 vs certain card types despite being Spell Speed 1 or 2. Slifer the Sky Dragon, Obelisk the Tormentor, and The Winged Dragon of Raw have their respective Summons treated as Spell Speed 4 as no cards can be activated when they are summoned. Dark Ruler No More is Spell Speed 4 against Monster effect responses since the opponent can't activate Monster Effects in response to its activation. Crusadia Testament enables Crusadia Monster effects to be Spell Speed 4 as well against any effect the opponent could activate. There are also cards that enable specific types of Summoning to not be interacted with such as Magical Meltdown and Branded Lost preventing Fusion Summons from being negated or interfered with, which is a Psuedo-Spell Speed 4 for the Fusion Summons themselves.

Forbidden Droplet is a special case of Spell Speed. Basically you can't activate any effect with the same card type to the cards used as the cost for Droplet. So if they discard a trap card as the cost, you can't activate any trap cards in response to it, *including Counter trap cards* , but you can still response to it with monster and spell effects. But once they discard all type of cards (monster, spell, trap) as the cost, you won't be able to activate anything to it as Chain Link 2. Basically, *Forbidden Droplet is a Spell Speed 2 card with 1/3 to complete Spell Speed 4 heritage.*

@sufx08453 жыл бұрын
This a was a really helpfull video ! But i think they are some imprecisions ^^ First the spell speed only applies for activated effect. So continuous effects of a monster do not have any spell speed. This is quite relevant because Cyber dragon has no activated effect, it only has an unclassified effect that allows him to special summon itself. That means that Cyber dragon has no spell speed 1 effect. The second thing is more a details but the effects of spell cards that activate gy are all spell speed 1 effects (including quick spell), also all effects of trap cards that activate in the gy are all spell speed 2 effects, unless they are trigger-like effects (like waking the dragon) and therefore are spell speed 1. The third thing is that trigger effect, even if they are spell speed 1 can be activated when they are triggered, regardless of the phase. That is important for cards like altergeist multifaker that has 2 trigger effects you can activate during either players turn. However your video is really clear and can help a new player to understand how basic yugioh works :)

The Spell Speed rabbit hole goes even deeper than that; some cards can actually negate SS4 effects, for example Fabled Unicore, which has a lingering effect that while you & your opponent have the same number of cards in hand, all effects your opponent activates are automatically negated; as such if a SS4 effect is activated while the condition is met, it will still be negated, despite having the "cards & effects cannot be activated in response" line of text which distinguishes them as Spell Speed 4. Maybe we should start calling Fabled Unicore Spell Speed 5... don't you love how simplistic this game is? 😂

If a monster was summoned by itself (like a normal summon, contact fusion, synchro, xyz, link or the summon of a monster like cyber dragon or t.g. boost raptor) you can negate that summon with a card that negates the summon of a monster. But if a monster was summoned by the effect of another card (like regular fusion summon, the effect of cynet optimization or t.g. drillfish special summoning itself for some reason) you can't negate that summon with an effect that negates a summon. Missing the timing still confuses me to this day though.
@randomprofile58533 жыл бұрын
@@Marcos-jv2me Thanks bro.
@Marcos-jv2me3 жыл бұрын
I think i understand how missing the timing works, but i am not sure. If a card has a trigger effect (that is, a card that only activates immediately after a certain condition is met, like the white stone of legend or the normal summon effect of t.g. screw serpent) it will either state "if" or "when" at the beggining of the sentence that states said trigger effect. An effect with "if" can NOT miss the timing. an effect with "when" can. If the conditions of a card with "when" does not appear during the resolution of a chain link 1, it misses the timing. An example is the effect of "Mist Valley Baby Roc". The effect of said monster states: "When this card is sent directly from your hand to the graveyard,you can special summon it." If, and only if that card is sent from the hand to the graveyard during the resolution of a chain link 1, it will trigger it's effect. Otherwise, it misses the timing.
@Marcos-jv2me3 жыл бұрын

Unless they count as spell speed 2 without me knowing, spell speed 1 don't necesarily need to be activated on main phases. This works like monster effects. Monster effects by deffault need the monster to be on the field for them to work, and state if they are activated somewhere else if it's the case. So, if Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring wouldn't have the part that states that it must be activated in your hand by discarding it, you would need to summon it in order to activate it's effect. Spell Speed 1 effects are the same. Most of them are manually activated on an open game state during main phases, but some effects state that the trigger is x event, with or without optional activation, such as Sangan, wich activates when it's destroyed. As I said, I'm not 100% sure about what I'm saying, because I don't know if they count as Spell Speed 2 effects, but for what I know, at least some of them count as Spell Speed 1, such as Time Thief Redoer, who, on an open game state during the standby phase, can activate it's Spell Speed 1 effects.

Basically the thing with with "spell speed 4" is that unwritten rule of yugioh that states, in my words, "Regardless of the game rules, If a card say so, it is possible". So if a card say that it cannot be negated or chained, nothing can negate it or chain it, even if it is a spell peed 1 or whatever.
@TotalEvo74 ай бұрын
Its simple, the last card in a turn (chain sequence) always activates first, so the first card has no effect on the last (even though it was played first).

Here are some cards that have spell speed 4 Ultra Polymerization, Borreload Dragon, Uria, Lord of Searing Flames, Odd-Eyes Gravity Dragon, Silent Sword Slash, Silent Burning and there are many others but these are the only one I can think of. But the strongest out of all the spell speed 4 cards are Silent Sword Slash and Silent Burning simply they can be used even if you have Silent Swordsman LV7 - effects (Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned by "Silent Swordsman LV5", and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. Negate all Spell effects on the field.), Spell Canceller - effects (Spell Cards, and their effects on the field, cannot be activated. Negate all Spell effects on the field.) or Imperial Order - effects (Negate all Spell effects on the field. Once per turn, during the Standby Phase, you must pay 700 LP (this is not optional), or this card is destroyed.). Basically Silent Sword Slash and Silent Burning can't be negated even if you have cards what negate spell cards on the field and the main reason why these card can't be negated under any circumstances is because of Silent Swordsman LV7, here is the effects of Silent Sword Slash (Target 1 "Silent Swordsman" monster you control; that monster you control gains 1500 ATK and DEF, and if it does, until the end of this turn, it is unaffected by your opponent's card effects. This card's activation and effect cannot be negated. You can banish this card from your Graveyard; add 1 "Silent Swordsman" monster from your Deck to your hand.) and I will point out the part of the effects "This card's activation and effect cannot be negated." and and this would be the same for Silent Burning. Basically the main reason for Silent Sword Slash so it can be used with Silent Swordsman LV7 and just in case some of you don't believe me play Yu-Gi-Oh league of the Duelist or Yu-Gi-Oh duel links if you have Silent Swordsman LV7 to see this for yourself. Here is a edit: main reasons why Silent Sword Slash can be used while Super Polymerization can't be used when cards such as Silent Swordsman LV7, Spell Canceller and Imperial Order is on the field simply because Silent Sword Slash has "This card's activation and effect cannot be negated." while Super Polymerization has "Neither player can activate cards or effect in response to this card's activation." and basically one can't be negated under any circumstances while the other prevent others from activating in the response of its own activation.

Really informative and understandable vid. Tanks! I have one question tho: At 5:28 u mention that the opponent cant play his quick spell card since a spell Speed 3 trap card has been activated. Does that mean u could chain a quick spell card to a spell Speed 2 or lower card, even if its still in ur hand? And if so, whats the point of Setting Spellcards facedown, since then they are more suseptible to removel? Actually scrap the second question, i can think of a couple situations where it could be usefull.

What you're referring to is unofficially called the Summon Negation Window; an important thing to note is that this window doesn't open if a monster is summoned by a card effect.

@eu4um3 жыл бұрын
You’re incorrect about Cyber Dragon. It’s effect isn’t a trigger or ignition but instead a summoning condition for an inherent summon. The effect does not start a chain but the resolved summon can, similar to a normal summon. A better example would be Mermail Abyssteus or Abyssmegalo. Their effects ACTIVATE in hand and discard for cost, thus can be chained to with Maxx C and you will get a draw when the chain resolves. If you tried to chain Maxx C to the summon of Cyber Dragon, you could only chain to the summon, and therefore would not get a draw, since you do not have to declare the activation of Cyber Dragon’s effect, you just: Summon it.
@EliaIlProfeta3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much this, although you don't even "chain" to an inherent summon, you just respond to it (the summon won't be Chain Link 1, the activated effect in response to it will be).

I don't think Dark Ruler no more counts as a spell speed 4, as it only prevents the opponent from activating card effect. Also, does Forbidden Droplet also count as a Spell Speed 4?

I wonder, what would happen if they made a monster whose effect was that you could chain normal traps to counter traps and monsters summoned from your hand or deck can respond to countertraps activated in their column. Considering the countertraps are mostly just negates, I don't think it would do much.

Can you make a video about the timing? (If you haven‘t done that already). Because back in the day we never cared about the timing (we probably never knew about that either). And when I‘m playing a YGO Video Game and I‘m missing the timing of certain effects, I‘m always asking myself: "How did that miss the timing?"
@Sharpndbuttrfly3 жыл бұрын
Missing timing is when a card effect says “when this card etc.” If someone chains to a “when” card effect, thats missing timing because you have to resolve it right awayto gain the effect. if I remember correctly or it might have been changed

He did go over those, and did mention those being Spell Speed 2. They're just the regular everyday effects that can chain to most other effects, and can be Chain Link 1 if you want them to be, but are capable of Chain Link 2+.
@matthewkuscienko46163 жыл бұрын
To clarify really quickly: *Counter traps are spell speed 3, and can be activated in response to any other card (as long as it's appropriate) *Both other types of trap cards, quick play spells, and monster effects that are listed as quick effects are spell speed 2, and cannot be chained to a counter trap, but they are able to be chained to any other effect/card *Everything else that I did not already cover is a spell speed 1, and they cannot be chained to any cards/effects

@EliaIlProfeta3 жыл бұрын
Cyber Dragon doesn't have a spell speed 1 effect, because it's not even an activated effect in the first place. It's an inherent summoning condition, which doesn't actually "activate" and does NOT start a chain.
