@@panda5996 Hong Kong would be within the Kingdom of Wu. Hong Kong became a part of Chinese Empire in Qin Dynasty approximately 400 years prior to three kingdoms. Three kingdom period is that of civil war, the kingdoms are not different ethnically or linguistically or ideologically. Think of it as the sengoku jidai in Japanese history, where lots of damiyos vied for the power at top. If a modern day Chinese from Hong Kong traveled back to three kingdom period, he/she will be surprised to find that people actually spoke a language very close to Cantonese! The mandarin that most Chinese people speak today is heavily influenced by the Mongolian language, so much so that it is entirely unrecoganizable in ancient China.

And to make it even weirder is there were more than 3 'FACTIONS' and yet the title is the 3 kingdoms.... i mean even the world can be at war and there are usually only 2 sides to the conflict because alliances are formed first. militia and drafted peasant with a spear don't really count. In ancient China when you talk about soldiers they need to be armored to be counted, even for the archers. Yuan Shao had up to 200,000 soldiers in armor at his peak.

Too bad you'd have to field 50 armies of troops in this game to even reach 100,000 men, which is impossible. The unit size in this game is so small. Most battles are just going to be 2,000 troops vs 2,000...

Cao Cao and Yuan Shao were actually childhood friends. Cao Cao was actually the adopted son of a eunuch who served the emperor of Han. The two hangout as kid, and they even stole a bride from a wedding together as teenagers. Unfortunately they drew sword to each others' throats when they grew up, trying to fight to their bitter end. As Yuan Shao and his former allies failed under the cunning Cao Cao and his genius strategists, Cao Cao become the true warlord that control the north of China, with the child emperor of Han under his control he commanded the raiments of those who still loyal to the Han dynasty.

@@codybonds nah, not really, the romance of the three kingdom is just an ancient version of game of throne, and just like game of throne it's full of betrayal, killing, and human nature. Cao Cao swore never to become the emperor of China, even though he control the child emperor, but his son Cao Zhi never made that commitment. So he simply deposed of the old Han emperor after Cao Cao's death and started his new dynasty. You should really do a story about what happened after the kingdom of Wei united China, though Cao Cao never got the chance to see that.

@@codybonds Good video by the way. Not a whole lot of Americans are interested in the history of three kingdom. In China ever since the novel was written, it became a classic for hundreds of years. Chinese love the story, and a popular TV series featuring Chinese history professors explaining the real story of that era was put out in 2008. I think you should check it out, but I don't know if they have English sub for that.

I assume it's Rafe de Crespigny's translation you're referring to. I honestly had ZERO knowledge of this period when the game was announced. It's been fascinating to see how rich and diverse the personalities were. As you said - these are characters that have gone from history to super heroes over two millenia. One even becoming an almost literal God of War!

@@codybonds Yeah, the author of the novel really hate Cao Cao, referring to him as the thief that stole the nation just like the Lannisters, while Liu Bei and his followers were portrayed as the rightful heir of the Han empire who had nothing in the beginning just like John Snow. Even Zhu Ge Liang's talent has been overly exaggerated, depicting him as a god military strategist, overlooking the fact that he played more of a prime minister role in Liu Bei's faction. Again, a very talented guy, but painted like overpowered god in the novel. The TV show I was talking about is an in depth analysis of the history of three kingdom era made in 2006, unfortunately, I couldn't find any with English sub. Jawf94 lol I played bandit king with my friend who played bandit queen and yuan shao declared war on me in the 5th turn, but after 26 turns we finally met and I ambushed him and destroyed his army and me and my friend went on a huge counter attack but they just keep coming but our soldiers fight with pride and passion and not for money! At the time the coalition attacks Dong Zhou near Luo Yang, Cao Cao is just a small part of the team, with several thousands military troops, while Yuan Shao is the leader (due to his politic background), it's not them the strongest warlords (Cao Cao at that time surely isn't). Only at later, when Yuan Shao conquers the whole north eastern provinces, he and Cao Cao would be the 2 strongest powers at northen China, but it's 10 years later since the coalition, mate. Three kingdoms era is much more complicated than just a civil war or military conflicts.

I enjoy telling stories from history - and these are easy platforms that people are interested in right now. Hopefully you've enjoyed Thrones. Yuan shao is quite an impressive leader more impressive than what most historian gives credit to, the key reason why he lost the battle to Caocao was due to a officer defect to caocao and tell him where yuanshao keep his food, which then got burned by caocao, and the reason why that officer defected is because his relative got arrested for commiting a crime…

the thing as much yuan shao have biggest army title or prestige he have one very fatal flaw, he is very rigid thinking. his refusal of emperor help show that he wanted power but does not want to sully his honor to basically make a puppet emperor. on han fu situation cao-cao will accept han fu offer but betray him and take his head (secretly), then split han fu land with gongsunzan thereby gaining teritory without any bloodshed and not making a new enemy.

Actually the emperor didn't like cao cao, and wrote a mandate in his own blood and it was passed to Liu Bei. liu convinced Yuan shao to attack Cao Cao, this was after Liu was defeated by cao and separated from his brothers and fled to Yuan shao. It wasn't the emperor wanted cao cao to take out Yuan shao for making his own empire...that was Yuan shu, he got the seal and proclaimed himself emperor.

You're confusing Romance of the Three Kingdoms with Records of the Three Kingdoms. In records it makes it perfectly clear Yuan Shao had imperial ambition. Also the blood edict was never proven, just something Liu Bei claimed and later the author of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms being a Liu Bei fan of course added it in.

Im currently going thru my first yuan shao playthrough and i declared war on gongsun zan way too early and i almost lost the bulk of my army, but i succesfully wasted his superior horse archers’ ammo and their normal archers ammo which allowed me to flank my enemy easily. And what remained of that invading force from gongsun zan, i HUNTED IT DOWN TO THE LAST MAN, LITERALLY. I didnt stop until they were all gone. I hunted down all the generals and soldiers of that group, even when i took down all of their generals with my champion, i hunted down the leaderless men so that they have no one to return, so that they can’t reform that army. And my spies told me that that invading force was the strongest and they only had 2 armies, so for now im safe. Im going to go west and attack zhang yan he has like 5 cities while i have 8. Easy peasie

the peak of the game would be when your yuan shao faction battles Cao Cao faction (when he already has control of Emperor and most of Central Plains), battle of Guan Du scenario, the battles are epic and tense, Cao Cao forces' threat would really put you to the test. but once you beat Cao Cao... well... the rest of the game become boring... too easy.

I'm assuming you mean every time I say "Yuan Shao" - when I first recorded the video I pronounced it YuAHN Shohw. So I had to re-dub his name across the entire video. It mostly worked... mostly.

I figured it out. The background image was a clip taken from the main menu of the upcoming Three Kingdoms game. It has a low "wind noise" that plays as ambient noise that wasn't removed. It was so low that until I turned the volume up on my cans I couldn't even hear it. I've had three others watch it today on their desktops and was starting to think everyone was taking crazy pills.

I don't actually work for CA. I just create these in my spare time. But yeah they've postponed it twice. Original release was December 2018. That was pushed to February. And now to May. I think the lackluster release of Thrones of Britannia has left them gun-shy. They get a hard time for bugs that most people will never even encounter, and their fan base is a passionate but temperamental one.

I prefer true "non scripted" non "sponsored" videos rather than these... And I don't like when game companies appeal to fans with "real life stories" that actually go against Total War's own motto of "You make your own history". Games should be shown and promoted based on real footage of gameplay and features and not "Stories" much less scripted stories given to you by CA's marketing department. CA will sell a lot more if they completely remove all the marketing department and uses that money to hire 5/10 additional Ai coders. Then the game will sell itself and need no marketing... the mouth to mouth is everything for gaming now... We gamers buy games based on what other honest players tell us about the game and not based on what the Marketing department shows us. Take a look at all the fake Marketing around EA's Anthem... basically the game is completely different from the marketed gameplays shown before.
