The fact your lathe is big enough to hold the drive shaft at all certainly made working on it easier than no lathe. Scott did a good job explaining the process of shortening it and why he did it the way he did. Keep on yolking away.

Nick those compressor side changes on the turbo reduce the chatter and damage to the compressor wheel when you let off the throttle, reducing the need for a Blow off valve which is the choo choo you hear on gasoline turbos as you don't want the intake pressurized when you let off the throttle. Apposed to the waste gate which opens to blow off excess pressure on the exhaust side so you don't over spin/boost the turbo. There are much better sources for more accurate info than I can provide.

The imbalance amount that would shake your fillings out in a car application wouldn't even be felt in a semi tractor driveshaft. Car shafts are typically balanced to within a couple grams - semi shaft imbalances are often measured in ounces. Not to mention the RPM difference between the two applications.

I've built my own drive shafts before to get me by in a pinch before but I've learned that even having the yolks slightly off their clocked position and out of balance even slightly will not only eat up U-joints it can also take out the bearings in the rearends, transmission and even the engine bearings and can also end up causing the crank shafts to break. I've just found that it's cheaper and easier in the end to pay my drive line guy $150 to shorten my drive line and have it done right.

Maybe, but on old model Ts and As, (giggity) the drive shaft ran in side of a stationary tube that was called a "torque tube". It's what kept the torque from twisting the rear axle in the springs.

The way that the better shops balance a driveshaft is by chucking it up in a lathe and reducing the run-out of the driveshaft tube between the centerline of the two yokes. If the run-out is close to zero, then the shaft is nearly perfectly balanced (if the tube isn't bent somewhere). They still check the balance afterwards and add weight only if/when needed. In your case, your lathe isn't really long enough to do that. Just FYI.

As a retired machinist that ran large cnc mills, that was a huge block of expensive aluminum. My guess is it took a 5 axis large milling machine 4 to 6 hours to get one done. Then there was deburring the whole thing and quality control check each one. The aluminum, labor and machine time adds up to one expensive turbo, Lastly cone is shaped that way for maximum air intake, my guess.

You could have taken the yoke from the peterbuilt drive shaft and stuck it onto the shaft that you were building. If the pipe was the same diameter. Since your past that point you might be able to pull the old yoke from the original transmission and see if it fits that transmission.

The reason why they do that is air backups at the compressor blade compressor housing then converts the high-velocity, low-pressure air stream into a high-pressure, low-velocity air stream through a process called diffusion. Fluid dynamics.
