It's a shame that Goha 66 got snubbed out because we could've had a great Kids vs. Adults arc in Sevens. The Goha 66 members could've been jaded and tired salarymen who lost their passion for dueling and the kids could've reminded them how fun life is through Rush Duels.

I will give some slack in saying that coming off a series like Vrains where the villains were absolutely stellar and honestly all S tier characters and villains which is a tall order to follow up and top those characters, but sadly a lot of them for sevens were definitely either not around long enough or just not very good in general which is a shame since the structure of good villains were there just never around for long enough to cement themselves as good antagonists

@brunosanto34882 жыл бұрын
In fact, one of the strong points of VRAINS is the villains (with the exception of Bohman, who I consider to be a worse villain than makes the SEVENS villains look better). Although well, in VRAINS, the only ones that stood out were Playmaker, Soulburner, Revolver and the villain on duty (as much as I like AI, it feels like a villain out of nowhere for the last Season of VRAINS) Now, I'd also say that Zexal had good villains, but at the same time, they're pretty forgettable. The Tron crew is quite well-liked, but they are rarely mentioned as outstanding villains. About the Barians, they were a good antagonistic group, but most people remember Nasch and Vector as the only standouts (something similar to the Goha Siblings with Yuo and Yuga Goha) And well, Zexal's final boss is generic as hell: an interdimensional god who seeks to destroy the universe.

I didn’t really mind Goha corporation and the Top of Hexagon being fake out villains. Because they would just end up being tropes themselves with how a lot of villain groups in shounen tend to be. One big boss and his wacky underlings. So I didn’t mind Sevens breaking expectations on their villains. The problem was that they did it way too much to the point that they didn’t feel legitimate. Especially the adult characters who aside from Otes and Mimi were always portrayed as incompetent.

Sevens lacked the villain threat alot of the other YGO animes had. Characters like Marik, Vector, Zarc or Lightning are memerable bad guys. It's an unfortunate drawback because everyone is now much more fleshed out, that a one-dimensional mustarsh twirler is out of place. Neil and Goha-Yugga sort of filled those roles, when they first became the villains in their respective arcs. Roa & Asano were always showed to be somewhat sympathetic. I think it's a good sign when out of 10 disapointments, a lot of them have overlap, so it's only really a few big problems with the show overall. They can all be summed up by: Poor villains or 13 episode arcs causing a lot of plot elements to be rushed through. I think the Goha Siblings are my biggest disappointment. I think they're all such great characters with fun personalities but they just... don't do much. They're glorified side characters, and as much as I loved The Lukeman, I think it was a bad idea to introduce him in that arc when it was supposed to be about the Siblings vs Team Rush Duel. They just hyped them up so much with the intro and the promotional promo that I really thought they'd be fantastic villains or at least that Yuo and Yuga would live up to that, and the worst part is... Yuo and Yuga are GREAT villains who just got snubbed at the end. If we had more time of Yuo and Yuga doing evil shit, I wouldn't be as mad about where they ultimately ended up. And of course, Otes too. He was great early on, when they were building mystery about him, but when we're at the FINAL DUEL, and we still don't know anything about him, that's when we have a problem. If we just got a LITTLE bit more about him I feel he could have been great. The Sevens villains were all just short of greatness.

Probably the only time I forgave SEVENS doing a villain fake out was when The Lukeman basically stole Yuou's role as main antagonist, to the point the immediate first episode after The Lukeman is defeated, Yuou's siblings try to cheer him up for getting his spotlight stolen. If only because The Lukeman was so bombastic it fit his tokusatsu / ultraman thematic and was a case of Yuou's plans backfiring on him HARD. I don't count Asana, Roa and Neil as being "fakeouts" because it was kinda obvious they would be a case of "defeat means friendship". I do find annoying Roa kinda got sidelined for a timeand couldn't even play the "narcisistic friend who will eventually get humbled" role. He eventually plays that role while keeping his ego in a good way but he could have appeared more. HOWEVER Nanaho and Goha Yuuga getting sidelined almost immediately after they were set up as villains was annoying because it felt like an inferior repeat of The Lukeman and didn't even stay as secondary characters. they kinda just left the show and only barely came back at the end
@willnack53152 жыл бұрын
I feel the core of what disappointed people can be traced back to 2 things: 1: false 20th advertisement. We were all looking forward to seeing something that would connect all previous series like they advertise and they barely did anything like that. We only got DM themed cards, a baseball themed Utopia, and that one cat version of Odd-Eyes. No Neos, no Stardust, the Cyberse card could’ve just as easily been Plant-types, not even some Ojama cards! 2: the writers assumed only kids would be watching this and forgot that the series has an teen-young adult audience too. Kids wouldn’t care about the plot holes or the short arc or even notice how repetitive the show gets; we would. On a separate note, did they cancel dubbing Sevens? It wouldn’t surprise me considering how the only good parts of the video game we got was the voice acting (at least to me) and they clearly haven’t put out any hints of when they’re going to release the first episode or when they’re going to import Rush Duels!
@lpfan44912 жыл бұрын
I can imagine the dub dropping at a random date in 1 or 2 years. It's pretty obvious that the chances of a rush duel TCG are minimal and importing the anime for the sake of the anime is probably not a priority anymore. Did Vrains even reach europe? I missed that if it did.

So many things felt like they were building up to some mystery/ supernatural phenomenon with Luke, but they didn't go anywhere. I could list many things but overall, my biggest disappointment is the writing for arc 6 and especially arc 7. Arc 6 dragged out the Goha Yuga reveal for too long, it had weak duels and some that didn't need to happen at all. Like what use had Luke vs Yuga r3 other than Yuga receiving another L from Luke? Tiger vs Yuga r2 seems stupid in hindsight aswell. Like Tiger never told the boys why she didn't want them helping Swirly. Her brutally defeating Yuga was supposed to be the reason for Luke dueling her later since he couldn't forgive her for how she had treated Yuga. But when we reach that point, the duel is just another disappointment for me. Arc 7's downfall was the whole memory loss subplot imo. I could write an essay about how bad it was for many characters and how much had to be retconned/forced so some things make sense (like Romin suddenly singing well despite being tone-deaf). That arc was basically just Luke doing everything to bring back the memories of the others (and yeah, he's kinda responsible for Asana and Neil remembering again too since his initial plan to bring back Gakuto's memories might have failed but it made Rinnosuke step in to duel Gakuto which inspired Galient and Sebastian to duel their "masters" too) while Yuga did nothing at all until ep 90. Heck, he, Gakuto and Roa suddenly being fine with Romin never getting back her memories was just ooc and only happened so Luke can stand out and be the hero who saves the day. Roa's reasons why he pretended to have lost his memories were stupid imo. I already mentioned Tiger vs Luke but man, what was that duel? Luke being all calm for no reason was very weird (considering he was mad at her again for insulting Yuga at the end of ep 88) but the worst thing was when he came up with some "excuse" for Tiger's shitty behavior towards Yuga in ep 76. Why all that "I can't forgive her yet" bs if it leads to nothing? And the way Nanaho and Goha Yuga were handled... They were our promising antagonists who got tossed aside for the final antag Otes. Goha Yuga in the last arc was just talking about darkness, then suddenly flying around looking unwell, back to the ground just to be kidnapped by Ko Girls and after being saved by his siblings, he returns to them. Nanaho and her servants being defeated off screen also feels wrong. And am I really supposed to believe she would smile happily to see Yuga coming back?

Let's actually look at the season to see if this is true. The beginning portion lasts from ep 2-15. That's 14 episodes. Then the desert world arc lasts from ep 16-26. That's 10 episodes. Going further, we have a transitional episode with ep 27 Lastly, we have the dark world-arc from ep 28-51. That's 24 episodes that contain multiple interlocking miniarcs. So basically, no, this is pretty much nonsense. These smaller arcs are of dynamic lengh, dynamic structure, are all setups and sequels to each other and even knew to have an episode outside of a longer arc for better pacing. That simply can't be done if the rule is "standalone 13 ep-packages or bust".

Not in any order, but here are some of mine. 1. Only 2 openings and endings (I think there could've been 2 for each season instead of 1) 2. Yuga's dueling record/character. (It's one thing for Yuga to not be the best duelist in the show, but it's another thing for Yuga to have almost 10 losses and not really enough wins to make him look like a capable duelist. Not just that, but it almost feels like the writer completely shafted him at some points. It's like they made Yuga, decided to make Luke the main character at some point, remembered that they had to make Yuga do something, and had a difficult time coming up with what that something should be. There were points early on where Yuga said that he wasn't interested in becoming the king of duels, only to change his mind after he dueled Roa. Then he would keep going back and forth on whether he wanted to become the king of duels or not. Not only was his dueling record bad, but his development as a character wasn't as good as the rest of our main cast.) 3. The villains (Yuga and Yuo were good, but definitely a little underwhelming. The show spent so much time hyping up the 6th Goha sibling, and when Goha Yuga finally revealed himself to be that threat, he just left the plot abruptly to make room for the Otes plot point. Nail and Asana were good as antagonists, but I wouldn't really call them villains per say. Yuo was great early on when he blindsided everyone by introducing fusions and even getting Luke to join his side, but I would've like to see a little more from him.) 4. The Goha Corp. (Mr. Goha and the Top of Hexagon felt completely pointless as characters. Only Mimi was really relevant between that group, and even she was more like a gag character.) 5. Otes' character (He was a mysterious character since episode 1, but I felt like his motivations and reasons for being didn't warrant him being that looming threat in the shadows. He didn't even win a single duel throughout the entirety of the show. We waited so long to know why he opposed Goha Corp so much, chose Yuga to inherit the Sevens Road monsters, let him install rush duels, and was constantly watching over him, but the show didn't really deliver.) 6. 13 episode arcs (Having shorts arcs can be a good thing, but when every single arc in a show is structured like that, it really limits your options in terms of writing as a result of trying to cram everything in that small timeframe. We got a duel between Bakuro and Hunt, a second Luke vs Bakuro duel, a completely unnecessary third duel between Yuga and Luke, and a duel between Gakuto and some guy dressed up as a zombie who is never even seen or heard from again when they could've spent that time having other matchups that made a lot more sense.)

It feels like every modern yugioh series had a character that wins way too often -Kite should've lost to Yuma -Declan never loses until Zarc shows up -Playmaker was just too squeaky clean. So I had just finished Sevens literally like 2 days ago and I agree with a lot of this. I think the thing I hated, or disliked the most was just the bunch of possible development not used. The one that always comes to mind from this is Yuga Goha where I believe in the short time he was kidnapped and after being set free he shouldn't have just immediately went to the siblings. I mean I know the series was ending and all and there was like 3 episodes left at this point but I feel like they had the time to invest a little bit of boost to the guy cause to be honest he's the one that come back into sevens cause I was like "Oh I have to see this man duel" and it's disappointing how quickly he goes to helping all of his siblings without any dialogue in between. This and Luke in general I guess we're my only issues. Luke while I did like him felt like the way they wrote him made him seem like in my eyes he was the main character and not Yuga. Yuga handled all the maximum stuff with Nail and Asana but lost a good chuck of duels (Which I do think is fine, maybe 1 or 2 too much for my taste but eh), but Luke, he pretty much got Yuga Goha's climatic fight all to himself. I think they should've done Luke starts began Yuga literally called him a threat and it would make more sense for him to get rid of him first. At this point the duel would just play out like it did but with reversed situations, or maybe that one's just me since he was closer to him I could see arguments where it was done right. But I won't say Luke's wins weren't all completely for nothing because sometimes they have really good development behind them, (my personal favorite of this being his matches before Romin goes against Princess G cause you get to see a more serious Luke).

Honestly, my biggest disappointment? Master of Sevens Road. This was supposed to be the ultimate protagonist monster, the strongest of all the Sevens Roads, this was pretty much supposed to be the one of the most badass things ever. And what happens? He loses in his debut duel without accomplishing much. Now this isn't exactly the 1st time in the series this happened, there were plenty of boss monsters with a not so stellar introduction. However, this is the worst for 2 reasons. 1: This is the protagonist's ace monster. Nothing more needs to be said here. 2: After this duel, Yuga only had 2 duels left and in neither of them he summoned Master of Sevens Road. And I actually predicted this to happen, and I wish I was wrong. After Yuga's duel against Roa we never saw MoSR ever again. With all this put together, they made a monster that, rather than looking like the most awesome thing ever, ended up looking like nothing but an embarrassment.

Season 0: Half of the first 20 episodes is effectively filler, most of which never comes back. Also, Shadi's entire thing never comes back because Toei simply didn't bother to push some sort of reference into the last two episodes. "Not our responsibility that the anime is dead, lol" DM: The main villains of the last two seasons sadly suck, completely ruining those arcs to some degree and an actually pretty well developed villain was utterly wasted.(Guess which one) And Mai's characterassassination when they made a decent setup for good original content and closure to her character. GX: "What do you mean the Series lied about the consequences?" 5Ds: Leo and Aki getting screwed out of their relevancy, Z-One's backstory, divine being revived offscreen for no valid reason which is taking away closure from that plotline because lol. Zexal: Really depends on what one considers a disappointment. What I heared a couple of people say is that the ending is too happy for all the tragic shenanagans that had happened until that point.

9. I figured she'd end up fighting Ranze since Ranze was the one who pointed out how she's an evil ninja as opposed to her good ninja status. 8. I'm fine with it, and I call him "King of the Joeys" because of it. 6. There are 80's cartoon villains more competent than the majority of Goha, I'm talking Skeletor, Cobra Commander, and Shredder levels of 80's cartoon villains incompetence. Or if you think that those guys aren't worthy of ridicule, than Dr. Doofenschmirtz from "Phineas and Ferb" is more competent than him. 4. Yeah, half of them got shafted, and one of the ones that did get shafted was undefeated. 3 and 2 (and a bit of 6). Yeah, the villains were either all Kaibas who turned good after being beaten, random filler people, or Otes who was playing the long game like Bakura. 1. I'm not too familiar on what else this studio has done, but it does feel like they do work on a bunch of 12-13 episode series/seasons since that seems to be how long most anime series/seasons are these days, with some of them later going on to last longer like My Hero Academia. Luckily after the first "season"/52 episodes/4 13 episode arcs they did seem to realize that they could longer story arcs (or it could be that I wasn't counting/paying attention/unclear of when one arc starts and another begins) so hopefully it won't be a problem. Although if they do still do 13 episode arcs, they might be able to make it work with a new invading party coming in every arc. Granted it's still formulaic, but it could work. My personal disappointments that weren't on this list are the mystery behind all the different blonde girls and how we didn't get any explanation for why Otes hired them all, and all the clip shows. They were funny clip shows at times, but still too many clip shows.
@sxwriter85692 жыл бұрын
10) Yeah I can't argue with you there. Nail and Asana probably should've went up against the Siblings or someone tied to Goha. Maybe Asana vs Yuro or Yuran and Nail vs Goha Drone? 9) I agree with Nanaho, heck the whole branch family with Gakuto thing could've made an solid arc in it of itself. She never even got a match with Gakuto which probably could've given him a even better send off duel. 8) & 7) & 3)fair. 6) Granted they f-ed over Asana's family, Mimi, and a few others though yeah, they could've been a bit more of a threat. 5) Same it didn't bother me too much, maybe balancing Yuga & Luke. 4) Yeah if Yuran and Yuro got one more duel, it would've been better. The Lukeman twist was good but it did over take their role for a bit. 2) All they need to do for Otes say, "my family founded Goha and all this company done has destroyed my reputation, just as the Sevens Road story my great grandfather worked on with the Mutsuba's created." That answers at least two questions. 1) Honestly I'm a little torn on this. Before and After Zexal, YuGiOh's suffered from arc fatigue and the 13 episode arcs actually allowed the writers to tighten the writing instead of giving us 2 episode duels every single time to pad out the story and plot. I do agree it affected the tournament, Goha Siblings arc, and the final two arcs a bit, but it kept things consistent and without feeling too slow or time wasting like other YuGiOh series. Though I do agree the arcs should probably be about 20 episodes going forward. Overall good list. If we had two more arcs (or seven more lol,) some of these wouldn't be so bad. But at least these didn't ruin the series for me.

I do want to say, for a number of these I could kind of point to covid as another culprit? Like, some stuff is valid and I agree the villains were not as great (I do like them better than most but I can see why); but if we look at the various delays around the start of the show because of the pandemic we can probably infer that the writers realized they'd have to rush through or even cut some things to be able to finish telling the story they wanted; which I think they still did quite well.

Hard to hold it up to the same level as the older gens when the audience is more clear on who its aimed at. Also he's apparently the Manga's main protag instead of Yuga, which while not likely to be a factor might be?) is canonically a better duelist than Yuga, and arguably the best duelist of the main Seven for most of the series save Nail. With them making Luke basically a prodigy in duel monsters and Yuga basically average at it (at least in the beginning), with only being the creator of the Rush Duel format and having REALLY GOOD FRIENDS his only real assets as a duelist for most if not the entire series, it actually wouldn't make sense for Luke to lose but Yuga to win without it feeling cheap. @christopherb501 Arc-V's biggest problem is; that it was meant to be an anniversary season but Dark Side of Dimension took most of the animators hence why during the synchro arc, most of the animation looked unpolished when it aired. Also, it had a roadmap, but the budget was used on the movie instead of the anniversary season, which also led Vrains to have issues as well. Japan has this problem when it comes to celebrating series when it reaches a milestone. They celebrate it by rushing everything as possible, and then as the anniversary is over, they go back to being taking things seriously again. How do I know this mainly because I have seen it before, for example Super Sentai and Kamen Rider anniversary seasons are either loved or hate it but the common reason is that they straight up rush things when they have good ideas but overshadowed by trying to have callbacks.

My biggest disappointments with Sevens: Yuga losing too much, the tournament arc, Gakuto not getting a second duel with Yuga like the other members of the main 7 did, and Nail not getting a lot of wins. This is my reasons for each disappointment. Yuga losing too much: I don't mind Yuga getting losses most of the time, however I feel that Yuga should have at least won most of his duels while still getting a loss at times (like with Yugi, Jaden, Yuma and Yuya). Gakuto not getting a second duel with Yuga like the other members of the main 7 did: I still wish Gakuto did get a second duel against Yuga where he wins against him like the other members of the main 7 did cuz he was the only one in the main 7 not to beat Yuga. Tournament arc: We barely saw any tournament duels in that arc since the fights were mostly offscreen except the last three duels of that arc (granted those last three duels didn't make the arc any better). I'm surprised this specific disappointment isn't on the list cuz it didn't live up to it's hype. Nail not getting a lot of wins: I know wins aren't everything, however I wish Nail did win more duels in the show since he has the least amount of wins out of all the members of the main 7 (he won twice in the entire show and that was it. I would have liked to see more then that). These are in not order btw, just listing them in a random order. Edit: I meant to say Yuga losing too much, not Yuga not losing too much. Sorry to anyone who read that, I made a mistake when I said that.
