Totally agree with you. A better Beethoven is not possible. Yuja is by far the best pianist since Rachmaninow - maybe a little bit better than he was. Her technique, musicality, intelligence and good taste are overwhelming. We can be happy to live in the same time as such a great artist and charismatic woman.

@Fred MyOpinion: You are right in every aspect with the exception of one vital point. The violin is not meant to be the star. It is not a violin sonata. Beethoven conceived it along with the other 8 as a piano and violin sonata. It is a duo. The pianist does not merely accompany, the pianist plays with equal weight and importance. Yuja Wang plays it exactly as it should be played. She is in an equal conversation with the violinist.

A really outstanding performance of the whole Beethoven Kreutzer-sonata (Yes, I've watched Wang and Bell perform the first two movements, too.) by Wang and Bell! The latter is a remarkable violinist, and in this famous Beethoven piece Wang for once shows that she's got more on her plate than just her dazzling techniques.

Yuja Wang really super glad she is not wearing high heels shoes anymore, but a wonder to listen and watch her playing. A truly great young pianist in the class of Helene Grimaud and Martha Argerich --in time to come, she like Yundi Life is still young.

I have been a choral singer all my life, but I did take a few piano lessons at 35. They did not help much but the one thing I took away from them was the idea that one should relax shoulders and arms and support them on the finger or fingers that are sounding notes at that instant. My teacher felt that was one of the best ways to produce a singing legato sound. I'm not sure whether YW uses that technique or not or if there is a trade off of flexibility vs sound.

Good performance of the Kreutzer. To all music lovers and interested in music and social sciences, I recomend to read the book "The Kreutzar Sonata" by no other than Leo Tostoy. Beethoven, with this work (chromaticism in the second movement) paved the way for Berlioz's Romeo and Wagner Tristan, no doubt. Incidentely, Mr. Bridgtower, for whom Beethoven wrote the Nº 9 Sonata, was a black violinist performing in England in those days. He should have been a good one to deserve the honour! Also, what about the idea that Beethoven himself was not a pure white but a mulato (I read the idea in a Time magazine edition of many years ago)

I'm not against the idea and I've heard it before (mixed-race), but there is a lot of literature about Beethoven and almost none if not all fail to mention any African background in his genealogy. His parent's problems with alcohol is widely known and are probably connected to his becoming deaf at the height of his career. We all have a distant African background, but what you are talking about is a connection only a few generations removed from his birth. If there is any literature I would love to read it. PS. Yuja has very little Beethoven in her repertoire and her performance here makes me long for more.

I poked around Google (Beethoven Genealogy) after I wrote my first response and a number of sites delve into his heritage tracing his father's ancestry back to the late 1400's noting a strong Flemish background. There is even a mention of a Spanish connection but that is where it ended and the possible region where there may have been some introduction of an African genetic line, but none of that is clearly documented.

Perhaps CK who allows an opinion that he is an expert on piano practice to prevail could help us out a bit here. Was my piano teacher correct about weighting the hands?. Is that technique useful for a pianist of YW's lightning speed? Is there a tradeoff? Was the technique taught by her Chinese teachers? CK, I'm trying to help. Does YW have technical deficiencies that warrant your sniping or is it just a gut feeling that drives you on. Some of us would like to know.

This was simply perfect . there were periods of this piece that Yuja was actually working . I have never seen that before in her playing . This was probably the second time she had played this piece no doubt . I bet she doesn't wear that dress again .

Yuja's main antagonist on her YT pages in the past has dismissed her as a typist, that she produces a lousy tone, and that she assaults the keyboard and the music. Because of this she produces a negative reaction in his pianistic sensibilities and it appears to be his lot in life to warn away other gullible listeners and that he is not driven by petty jealousies. OK, I'll take him at his word but lets explore the charges.

Wang has a superb sense of rhythm, always correctly on time. Her accents are correct too. There's no denying she is fun to hear. But Bell plays like a fiddler, not a violinist. His rhythm is irregular, always playing catch up to the pianist .

Also... What is this non-sense about YW treading lightly on the Beethoven catalog. This performance belies that self-doubt. A lot of pianists who are not in Yuja's league are publishing sonata and concerto cycles and growing older does not necessarily translate into pianistic maturity. Yuja, go for it.

It's obvious that the pianist is better than the violinist. The violinist's tone is a bit maudlin and his timing somewhat drags.This duo reminds of the rabbit vs. turtle race ....where the violinist can't keep w/ the pianist and she is not stopping but is in full swing of things. She plays as if the piano is the star of the show when it is the reverse. But, in the end, it's fun listening to her. She has a clean, direct, and fun way of interpreting pieces.

The terms I use: "affectations", "gesticulations" are well known to serious practicing musicians. I speak here of music only - not bodily movements which are of no consequence to me. lourak613 Ok now I understand (English is not my first language and for me your comment sounded as if it was aimed at the body). And I slightly disagree. Both adhere pretty well to the score (I played the Kreutzer long ago myself (the violin) but I am not a professional, just studied it more than half a century ago, but letft it always as a hobby and choose engineering and programming - which I studied in parallel - as profession). It seems to be sort of a spontaneous, slightly exaggerated interpretation, but (IMHO) well within the limits. I personally like the recording with Argerich / Kremer best, but both recordings have one thing (avery important one) in common: They enjoy playing this very demanding sonata and they transmit this joy to the listener. However - we might disagree, we all have different taste and experiences so we can disagree with an interpretation, but we should never disrespect or claim, that one of them is the absolute best :)
