Yuja is, on screen, dwarfed by both the grand piano and the orchestra, yet she completely dominates the whole scene. What a talent she exhibits, and she manages the strength that Tchaikovsky asks for in his work without every going over the top. Brilliant, just brilliant!

How can anyone create such a wonderful composition, and without any of the things that we take for granted. I cannot imagine how I would even make a start, and then how it would sound with an orchestra playing. Coming down to breakfast, or dinner, and saying, “I’ve finished, have a listen to this, and try thinking how it would sound, with an orchestra too”. The mind boggles, absolutely beautiful, thanks.

How do you make an old warhorse of the concert stage sound fresh and exciting? You’ve just heard it. Both soloist and orchestra played with brilliant precision, at times exchanging rapid fire phrases, each holding his own without a fraction of pulse being lost. And there was still room for expansive gestures, a full dynamic range with the most delicate pianissimos, to the most thunderous of fortissimos, and everything in between. It’s difficult to imagine how the score Tchaikovsky committed to paper could be played or made to sound any better in a live performance than we’ve just seen in this video.

What a wonder she is. The Tchaikovsky sings in a way I’ve not heard before. There are portions where you can actually feel the composer singing…no humming in that lyrical baritone voice he had. Then there are parts phrased similarly to vocal recitative that are so entrancing, and I love the strength and power Yuja brings when required. Play on Miss Wang….play on…Bravo.

@@tonybarnard8071 The interesting thing is that I think she was criticized for her appearance or things unrelated to her performance because her performance is just too good to be true that she exhibits the qualities of a master level of some of the best pianists. I was in the tenth row from the interval, left sector! The concerto was stunning, I was completely in awe after the final chain of octaves :) At the pause she changed into casual clothes and mixed with the public like any ordinary spectator, I bumped into her at the discs stand and didn't recognize her first, cause she's so petite, haha :D Well I was only partly impressed with the encores, cause she missed some notes in the Mozart-Volodos "Rondo alla turca", and Chopin's Waltz op. 64 no.2 was not in her best interpretation, but I've eventually found out that she had had a hand injury and some other problems, so I was quite amazed about how she could play the concerto and also give two encores.

Yes, the sound itself I think is boomy-makes the piano sound kind of heavy. But Yuja played with her usual aplomb. So interesting her first big splash on the major music scene was replacing Radu Lupu in this at the last minute, so to speak, with the Boston Symphony when she was 20. I think you could say she has mastered this evergreen concerto...
@hollywebster31012 жыл бұрын
This was also the story of Andre Watts who at age 16 filled in for Glenn Gould playing a Liszt concerto with the New York Philharmonic. And the rest is history. Yuja is creating her own legend now!
@bloodgrss2 жыл бұрын
@@hollywebster3101 Yes indeed-Watts, a favorite of mine to this day. For a time in her college youth, Yuja was, in her own words, the second hand for a number of cancelling pianists; Lupu and Argerich among them. And she seems always to have impressed. Not quite the same story (for Yuja is friendly with and admires both), but it reminds me of Jascha Heifitz debut. The pianist Leopold Godowsky, who was a family friend of the Heifetzes, shared a box with the violinist Mischa Elman, who was 10 years older than Heifetz, had studied with the same teacher, Leopold Auer, and was the first great Russian violinist to make an impact in the US in the 20th century. The longer the concert went on, the more uncomfortable Elman became. In order to hide his discomfiture, he turned to Godowsky and said, “It’s hot in here, isn’t it?” Quick as a flash, Godowsky retorted, “No Mischa. Not for pianists.”
