Great vid! Shows Yuja developing massive climax in movement 3. Remarkable buildup to the great left hand jumpin’, Rachmaninov octaves. Strong voicing. So many vids cut to drumsticks or tympani mallets at this spot. One of the most difficult and exciting finishes in a piano concerto…..who wants to see drumsticks?? Yuja’s great! Look forward to her Artistry in Chicago. When Yuja’s at Symphony Center or Ravinia, atmosphere is electric. Kinda’ like when VH showed up in Chi-town in the 60s&70s.

No pianist can perform the Rach 3,as beautifully, technically, and emotionally as Yuja has done--except Horowitz himself. He is the Master of the Rach 3. Yuja is the only pianist that compares to Horowitz,s recording. Rachmaninoff praised Horowitz who when. he played it in the presence of Rachmaninoff. From my own experience living in and visiting some countries in Western Europe it is not unusual to see (and feel) the absence (over low levels) of air conditioning in many places like concert halls, restaurants, cafes, etc. Yuja Wang is a champion beyond her masterful execution of the Rach # 3 by enduring such a horrible indoor lack of proper air conditioning.

I really have no idea why she doesn't play the ossia cadenza...
@skrutten_ Жыл бұрын
The toccata cadenza wasn't my favorite at first. I always liked the ossia because it felt so grand, but then I switched and prefer the shorter one now. To me, the ossia is just overly dramatic, without any restraint. I think the structure of the toccata cadenza is so much more beautiful and intriguing. It's more noble and elegant, whereas the ossia sometimes seems loud for the sake of being loud. So honestly I'm happy she plays this one
@mcd1722 Жыл бұрын
It is the ossia. It just doesn’t seem Like it because she plays some sections of it so lightly. She does’y seem to struggle at all like other pianists but I certainly want it more Forte.

Remarkable!! But why is she not playing the terrible difficult 2 bar ossia in the finale (35:05 till 35:10)? Too hard? The same for Horowitz, Argerich, Volodos and everyone else. I never heard any other pianist then Evgeny Kissin playing that ossia (bar 215-216 I believe). Rachmaninoff wrote that ossia to challenge the pianist even further. It's hard to believe if pianists like Wang or Volodos are not able to play these two ossia bars. But then again, If you see the notes/bars and how fast it must be played it will dazzle the mind. Kissin ofcourse is notorious for his transcendental technique, but come on, Is he really the only one who can play it? So far it seems to be. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWXRf6Kcidmre9k. (38:13 till 38:18)

To each their own, to me the two bars of ossia don't sound as fitting as the regular. Edit: Wang, Horowitz, and Agerich also never played the ossia cadenza in the first movement. Doesn't mean they couldn't.
@hiddenrivals Жыл бұрын
@@DrDLL99 The big cadenza in first movement is indeed a way of interpretation cause they musically sounds completely different from each other.
