They’re lovely fish. It’s great to study them during their whereabouts in an aquarium.

Dan, I keep my Chocolates at 83 degrees and they do great in the high Florida heat. It's a myth they require soft, low pH water. My FL City water is 8.2 pH and over 400 DOS. I've ordered twenty five of these fish from Dan and haven't lost a one. They are a mysterious beautiful fish and easy to keep.

will your typical cardinal/neon tetras and Harlequin Rasboras be too fast for the chocolate gouramis?
@DansFish8 ай бұрын
I think it comes down to numbers. Cardinals, Neons and Harlequins can be quite fast at feeding time. If there are a lot of them, they might out compete the Chocolate Gourami. If there are a few of them, they might be okay. It gets tricky though because those species tetras and rasboras like to be in schools, so they do best in larger groups.

I really love the chocolate gouramis, the Sphaerichthys genera are all stunning even the brown Sphaerichthys osphromenoides. Thanks for showing them off, seriously underrated group of gourami and the only gourami I actually find facinating. You should check out the samurai chocolate gourami, Sphaerichthys vaillanti although from talking to people who have kept this species have said their a lot more territorial specifically with their own kind. In the UK we seem to have a few issues with this genera as our water is really very hard (pH 8, TDS 250) and they don't seem to do well in harder water and instead prefer much softer water specifically S. vallianti.
@DansFish5 жыл бұрын
I like your taste...I LOVE samurai gouramis. I get them every chance I get. I honestly have not seen any problems when they are kept at a higher pH/hardness. Breeding might be negatively effected ( I don't know for sure), but they will thrive IF they are acclimated properly.

When you mentioned that the guppies sort of "trained" the gouramies, I had a similar experience with my sparkling gourami. It always seem to be just one in the bunch though. I had placed bunch with scissortail rasboras at one time since they were not really big nor really small in size. One seemed to copy the movement and even the coloration of the scissortail. It tried its best to have the same markings, I thought it was a different species too, it mimic the dark tail and what seem to be a faint black line along its body, it was bizzare. Another instance I had a few to be housed in a "plant grow out tank", where I placed plant trimmings to grow. I have a couple of puffers in there to control snails. One sparkling gourami out of this bunch imitated the behavior of the pea puffers. It would fold its tail and make the spots on its body more prominent another odd behavior. I had to split the group since I didn't want too crowd each tank, 3 in one tank and another 3 in another tank.

I have 2 questions. Can they be kept with dwarf gourami? That's if I keep them in my large paludarium. But if I don't. How many can I keep in 20 gallon? You said they like to be in groups.
@karolbrooklyn5 жыл бұрын
I"ve got 4 of them from my local store, but they've last few days only, they're imported and the owner of the store had no clue how to feed them so sold to me very cheap, they're in bad condition already but i felt bad leaving them at the store and die hungry, at least they've had their last good meal on nematodes in my tank

I'm sorry to hear they did not make it. I hope you get some healthy ones someday...they are truly amazing fish if they are properly transitioned to aquarium life.

I am looking to buy some chocolate gouramis for my Fluval 15 gallon flex. About how many are safe for the tank. The tank does have live plants and peat to keep the water soft. I am planning on some corys and maybe shrimp. I like her croakers. I have about 5 and their a couple of yearsold. They are hard to find.
@DansFish4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a neat tank. Stocking depends entirely upon how much is fed and how much water is changed, plants, and filtration, but I'd say you could easily get 6 or so of them in a 15 gallon if it is mature and well maintained.
@michaelmathes19914 жыл бұрын
@@DansFish Right now I have three skunk catfish and a couple of female bettas in their . I put about 65% of water from my two older tanks and am using Seachem Stability. If the female bettas are two aggressive I can remove them. I like what you did with the guppies.
@emmanuelramoncerrer63905 жыл бұрын
How do you "train" them to take dried food? Also, by groups, how many are you talking about? Lastly, at what pH do you keep them at?
@DansFish5 жыл бұрын
Hello Emmanuel, I start them off by putting in a small amount of flake food each morning and then feeding them live and/or frozen food in the evening. After a couple of weeks, they will start eating the flake food. This way, they learn to eat it without going through a fasting period, which can be stressful to newly imported fish. Groups...the bigger the better. 6 or so if fine, but more is better. At a dozen or so, they really start behaving more "naturally" and feeling more confident. My water is naturally around neutral pH. However, I know lots of folks who keep them in very hard, alkaline water with no problems. I don't think pH matters for keeping them. I think clean water matters.

Beautiful fish! Really. Thx. :) Since they're stalkers, will they eat dwarf shrimp like Cherry's and such quite easily? Or maybe there's a way to almost, pretty much, prevent that? And what about tank size, like 20L, regular 29 gallon, etc? Finally, max pH if you know? Because mine is kinda high, 7.2 or a little higher. TIA! :)
