Cory thanks a ton. My daughter has been begging me for these for a long time. I finally said ok and we got a few and put them on a 15 gallon planted. Thanks to your vids I went into knowing how to care for these little guys. They are amazing. However the LFS sold me a baby Fahaka with mine by accident so I went and invested in another tank just for that one. Now I need to fully research care for that.

I had a female pea puffer in a nano tank and she actually got along just fine with a lone crystal red shrimp that was leftover. Super cute and tiny, always greeted me every morning. A little more high maintenance than other fish because of the live/frozen food diet, so when she passed, I eventually replaced her with a betta - just as active, very colorful, and easier to feed.

These guys are what got me into the hobby! I’ve always loved puffers but was a little spooked to get a big one or even a salt water fish. These guys were so small they seemed like something a noob could handle. A year later (and 2 more tanks) and I’ve fallen in love! The puffers are still my favorite though :) they are always watching me and zipping through the tank.

I like your videos! PEA PUFFERS have taught me so much. I have a pea puffer in with my male guppies in a 5.5 gallon tank. The reason all goes well is 1) the tank is FULL of live plants for lots of coverage 2) there are a LOT of ramshorn snails. 'Puffy' single-finnedly manages the WHOLE colony of snails by himself. He eats the snail-eggs AND the baby snails. He leaves the adult snails alone. As the adult snails eventually die off from old age, I add more snails from my other tanks. Puffy works everyday checking the eggs. He does NOT bother the guppies. Occasionally the boy guppies try to get amorous with him and he just swims away, lol. It is one of the great joys of my life to watch this 3/4 inch fish manage this snail colony. It is very important to add more snails when the old ones die naturally of old age, after laying lots of eggs in their life-time. 2 years now, this has been going on. LOTS of plants encourage the snails laying their eggs, and this gives Puffy lots to keep 'interested' in. He carefully SCANS every square inch of the tank for his dinners. AMAZING little fish. I am so grateful to know and be able to observe him.💦🙏🐟

@sharonjack858211 ай бұрын
Maybe start with 2 puffers as they can really over-kill the snails at first until they learn to mostly eat the eggs and baby snails. I made the mistake of putting in 4 puffers in a 10 US gal tank and they overdid it at first. I like to have plenty of snails as they keep the glass clean and really help clean the tank. i have LOTS of plants for the snails to get away from the puffers if needed. You can even feed some live food at first if the puffers are slow to eat the snail eggs and little ones. You are very welcome!!@@ioancurea1356

Also I've found one of the best ways to feed them is to have a separate tank that has snails (Ramshorn or Pond work out best), and lay some sinking carnivore pellets (I use NLS) in the tanks. The snails will take to that, which allows them to very easily be gathered, but on top of that you transfer the nutrients from the pellets to the puffer via the snail.

I’ve actually owned several of these little guys, and they’re actually pretty easy to tell the males from females, at sexually maturity the males typically have a black spot on their bellies as well as an iridescent blue stripe undertone, while the females markings tend to be more muted in general. They are also born without gender and as they mature if any develop as male they will actually release a hormone in the water preventing any other still “underdeveloped” puffs from maturing as males. And also the clarity or saturation of the markings isn’t always the beat way to tell the sex as any puffer will become pale and muted if it is stressed or has poor water conditions. And they should really only be kept with other puffers, although they can coexist with other fish they do tend to bully and be extremely aggressive, I had to remove all the ones I ever owned from my other tanks including my 40 gallon and 20 gallon community tanks and wound up having to set up a tank of their very own because they stressed out all my other fish (even at one point my mated blue ram cichlids we’re afraid of them) but also totally worth it because they do have wonderful little personalities and they will interact with you, and even take food from your hand

I've kept 10 pea puffies with 6 blind cave tetras, 3 angel fish, 4 guppies, and 3 bettas. For YEARS, in a 20 long tank. Sand, lots of plants, spider wood, and mopani wood. It's ADORABLE, they all sleep on different leaves of a sword plant. I've used A.P.I. General Cure and A.P.I. Fin and Body Cure with no problems. They also get along with micro cories, dojo loaches, and paradise gouramis. (Though my micro cories died from a snowstorm heater outage; I wish they made emergency battery powered heaters! And the paradise gouramis I moved to a species tank as they keep breeding!) I do a lot of water changes. I know my tank is heavily populated, but it's been okay for years. I am going to start 3 new tanks and give everybody some more room.... I feel you should treat your little fish pals the way you want to be treated. They NEED what you NEED. Soft sand to sleep on, real plants, a private place that just yours alone. One lonely fish in a lovely tank is like a Stephen King short story or a Twilight Zone episode: it's stressful and uncanny to be in a luxury suite, FOREVER ALONE. A final note: Wikipedia says that pea puffers in their native habitat are becoming rarer, because of the aquarium trade. ✨💖🌿🐡🐡🐡🐡🌿💖✨

I honestly got the ghost shrimp expecting them to be taken out by the puffers and a few of them have. There’s the tell-tale carcass with a big bite taken out of the back... I feed frozen bloodworms and live black worms. They really enjoy the live black worms. I have to feed a lot at a time because the whole rest of the tank will gobble them up before the puffers get in on the action. They really like it though when some of the live worms don’t get eaten, slip into the gravel and then they stalk the gravel for the next few hours hunting! It’s so fun to watch. We love our little puffers. Only have them about 6 weeks, so I have no clue boys vs. girls.

We had 3 pea puffers in our 20 gallon planted. The tank was a jungle. The puffers lived peacefully (initially) with 6 panda cats and 6 zebrafish. As Cory noted, when you purchase these fish they are immature and cannot be sexed. Well, at 10-12 months we had 3 angry males. The puffers were good about their other tankmates, and left the zebras and cories alone, but the largest male tormented the 2 smaller ones. We eventually rehomed them all - not worth keeping 3 little fish in 3 separate tanks, and our LFS had no other pea puffers to exchange in the hopes of finding a few females. They were so aggressive I would honestly not have gambled putting new puffers in with them in any event. It is a shame, as they are cute and full of personality.

I have 3 pea puffers and they aren't huge fans of frozen foods. They check it out and then swim away. They must eat it eventually or else they would have died. Now I have a good colony of ramshorn snails and my lfs has live brine shrimp. As soon as they see live food they attack them immediately. I love these lil puffers. Thanks for the great advice Cory!

I'm sold. Decided I was done with betta fish after the one I have passes, but I wasn't sure if I'd be done with the tank too. I've wanted a dwarf puffer for years but thought keeping several of them in a large tank was the only option. Now I'm definitely putting a dwarf puffer in my five gallon when the time comes. Looks like I'll be staying in the fish hobby for a while longer than I thought.

I’ve got a female pea puffer in a heavily planted aquarium. She’s very, very docile for a pea puffer and lives with a group of guppies. Although she will kill a guppy every now and then she generally leaves them alone. I’ve got her on freeze dried blood worms, krill and the occasional live ghost shrimp.

I know it’s an older video but so informative! I’m picking up a 29 gal this weekend and it will be my pea puffer tank. Aiming for about 6-10 of them! I have a community tank, African cichlids, a turtle, and a glo tank for my kiddos 😂

I was fishing in a lake in Kerala (India) the other day and wasn't catching anything... Frustrated I was packing up to leave... I made a swipe in the water with my fishing net and voila 2 pea puffers.... Soooooo cute They are now in my 9 gallon tank along with cardinal tetras, endlers and 2 platys

Bro give the little guys more space 🥲 from the lake to 9 gallon is a harsh transition 🤣

Thank you for the advice and great replies. I'm caring for 8 in a 200 litre , its a gravel base , planted with grass and anubia. I will get swords soon, but use artificial ones to add height overall. I keep glass shrimp to clean the algea, 2 bristlenose and 4 ottos. I feed frozen bloodworm in the net and not much goes to waste. Live worm struggles to hide in the gravel! ITs too cold for snails now, but I hope a couple of outdoor tubs I've covered will give ramshorn. Funny, I really don't know their sexes or mating habits if any; Its nice to see them coast along in a caravan type trail.

Yo Cory I hear people talking about not being able to identify these guys, all the time and they could not be more incorrect, misinformation all over the webs on these little guys. Male Pea puffer's are super easy to identify at any size. Males have 1 to 3 vertical stripes behind their eyes to the cheeks, its small but there on every male big enough to sell. You can get a close up with microscope and see this line on the cheeks when they still have the yoke attached. It is a slight iridescence that will shine bright when the light hits it right. the older they get the more pronounced the lines becomes and the dominant males get a super pronounced lining pattern that even start to turn into rings around the eyes as well, the females do not have the lines and are nice and even coloring on the cheeks. If you take a look at the one at 3 min its a male has a single line on its cheek there, line the one at 7 min is a female no line. Additional dimorphic traits once they do get older though males start to get bright yellow tips on their fins and contrasting black spots where the females spots are foggy at the transitions between the color

great video! I had purchased 3 Amazon Puffers. Only 1 made it through quarantine by he/she is really pretty cool. It is the boss in my 40 gallon breeder with gouramis, habrosus & panda corys and a couple BNP. I feed Puffy krill from tongs. The kids love that fish! I know the video was about pea puffers but I wanted to share.

I'm super late, but I just purchased my first two pea puffers yesterday for a new aquascape I recently made. I'm contemplating on seeing if I can get them to coexist with a couple of amano shrimp after I add a bunch of java moss this afternoon.

I have 2 different pea puffer tanks that I keep. My first is a 10 gallon planted tank that I kept 3 in with shrimp as well as nerite snails and they were peaceful. My second tank is a 36 gallon that I made a community tank with 3 puffers. Everybody has been doing well with each other. I think that having it heavily planted has worked in my favor but the puffers have been able to live with plattys and zebra danio just fine, even a common pleco doesn’t bother them.

My setup. One pea pffer in a 54 liters heavily planted aquarium with CO2 injection. Tank mates are 2 otos, 3 corydoras julii, 4 corydoras habrosus, 5 green neon tetras, 2 chili rasboras, 2 zebra danios. I feed frozen bloodworms, white mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, etc. He gets along with his tankmates with no aggression.

I've got 4 in a 60 litre medium-densely planted tank and they all thrive perfectly well with my 1 ottocinclus, however I've tried them before with cherry shrimp as my LFS and an online forum said they would be fine but one aggressive male attacked the shrimp and killed it leading to me removing and rehousing the other shrimp. Love these fish but would not recommend housing with inverts. Great video Cory!
