PATREON : www.patreon.com/maraganger TWITTER : twitter.com/maraganger Didn't expect for it to be this hard, to talk about a game so influential, so impactful to me. Last year, I found out that my coworker had never heard of Yume Nikki when I made a comment about Toby Fox's interview with Kikiyama that they happened to overhear. I recommended the game to them, and for the next few weeks, whenever we had a shift together, we'd play the game behind the front desk. Over that time, they told me they'd invested 30 hours into the game, discovering secrets I barely remembered from my feverish hunting through the Yume Nikki wiki page back when I'd attempted to play the game a few years prior. On one memorable occasion, they directed Madotsuki all the way to the sky garden, and we sat in silence watching Madotsuki stare out at the skyline over the trees. Even though that time in my life was only a year ago, I still think back on that period with nostalgia, and I'm glad to hear that nostalgia isn't merely a personal experience. (also this channel has been helping me through this allnighter so thank you!!)

I played Yume Nikki because a friend recommended it to me and it became this weird thing that changed how I looked at a lot of art, and what I wanted to make. At first I thought that sometimes leaving out a lot, or leaving things up for imagination can be much more impactful than stating it clearly. Which is true. But it also made me think over time about what makes the abstract interesting too. it's not simply because "wow, the abstract is so weird! It could mean anything!", but in the case of Yume Nikki, everything that is abstract is entirely a part of Madotsuki's character and character exploration. It's not simply random. We are exploring Madotsuki as a character through the abstract. And the result is a story that what we make up in our heads. Also I can definitely relate to wanting to talk about something, but feeling the anxiety of doing it. I think I stopped worrying about "has this been talked about enough, have others done it better?", because irregardless someone else's thoughts will not be the same as your own. Or I think of it as I do in drawing. Even things that are "flawed" or "imperfect" can feel vulnerable because it reveals how little or how much you might know about certain things. But that is also why it is interesting. If someone draws ribcages "wrong", because they misunderstand or perceive it differently, it can be what sets them apart and becomes their trademark. Something that people are drawn to, although it was entirely unintended.

Really insightful read, glad to see other people resonate with Yume Nikki on a deeper level, as much as it hit close to home for me. Also when it comes to being worried about creating art that might've been already done, it's a long process but I'll take your words at heart and just keep making what I vibe with, in hopes that people will too vibe with. :>

thank you for making this video! Yume Nikki means so much to me because it uniquely evokes this feeling I used to have as a child - a feeling of pure wonder, where I'm full of questions but not trying to analyse things, just taking everything in and appreciating life's mysteries as they are, revelling in the curiosity itself. that feeling gets harder and harder to tap into as an adult, but it's still in there, and Yume Nikki has something uncanny about it that brings it out for me.

Lovely video As i just randomly searched Yume Nikki/ Inside retrospectives and analysis to hear others perspective about this game, I just love to hear other people’s opinions on ambitious games as not only do they serve mystery to the creators artistic intent, because of Yume Nikkis old gameplay and timeless visuals really inspires other game designers and people like me, I frequently come back to Yume Nikki simply for its atmosphere, dreading music and secret areas especially mars, a large dessert like planet that you wished you could explore more or behind masadas ship, and just seeing mars-san crying and unnefective to any effects (knife changing color might represent the reaction to not feeling the pain) with the 6 second piano loop that.. thatsjust beautiful well done kikiyama

OH SHIT I didn't realize this was what you were working on!! So excited 9:00 hah, I also thought of hypnagogia! Make sure you catch the expansion when it comes out soon 👀 One of my favorite parts of this game is the impressionist and almost apathetic approach to art? I don't want to sound negative, but the art cares much more about the feel and the quantity of content than the quality/polish, which is actually super great in practice. The end product feels vast, scary, and difficult to comprehend in a way that highly polished and detailed art sometimes just can't. Lack of detail is an artistic tool too, and it just hits this perfect amount of detail imo. Adding any more would just take me out of the dream
@maraganger2 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree with that sentiment, Yume Nikki's approach to art is inspiring in it's own almost minimalist take on itself. Also can't wait for the Hypnagogia update !

I really liked this video. It explored a lot of feelings I also have on the game. My fave parts were when you talked about Yume Nikki presenting something but somehow also simultaneously letting it mean whatever you want it to mean. Like a mirror of how you feel, like you said. I relate to Madotsuki’s depression, anxiety and feelings of isolation, too... Also yeah, it was pretty cool back when OSTs were not available everywhere on KZbin and other websites so you could only listen to some tracks in-game. :) It was really nice just chilling in those areas, moving around just for fun, and listening to the tune. It felt special, like when you go to a place to see a view that you really can only see from there. It felt fun creating a path for yourself to get there, and just going through it everytime, like a route that you always go for walks at in a small town. I’m not complaining about OSTs being available though, of course. ❤️

We used to spend summers in the village when I was a kid. It was a gloomy village that was quite far from the city. There were no computers or internet, but if there was one thing I enjoyed doing back then, it was exploring the areas of the village that no one else saw. My friends and I would find hidden places made of trees and discover hidden places. Yume Nikki reminds me of the feelings I had at those moments. There were also times when I was interested in mathematics. This may sound strange, but what I felt was similar to what I felt in Yume Nikki and in the village. I guess there are some directions that these feelings drag me. I feel like I can find peace if I can produce something in the areas I love one day. After this video, I'm sure I need to strive for something. I always hesitated because I couldn't find what I loved in the people around me. But then I realized that most people don't have things of their own that they can love. That's why I find this characteristic of mine very valuable. But how well can I live this life by being guided by others?

Just finished watching this. I gotta say love how you went above & beyond with this video from going to the beginning, to how you felt about it, to end with the aftermath of its popularity in both games inspired by it & how the series as a whole was received by the community when it began branching off to manga title & a remake. I'm gonna stick around for more videos like this so you definitely earned a sub from me. Keep up the well researched videos going, because whoof you definitely called me out at the beginning about writing scripts about things you wanna cover, but the anxiety drives you insane & want to postpone it for later.

This game didn't needed to be turned into indie horror platformer. It needed a "director's cut" version. Think the original YN with new maps as well as new puzzles. Also i don't think it needed new effects, but all those cosmetic ones needed an actual purpose.

Just played the game last week for the first time. Thank you. This game... is indeed one of the kind. I found making one aware of one's unknown feeling through symbolism is powerful method. This is an art and can work as a digital tool (meaning you can copy, share, and preserve it) to help developing humane sympathy by conducting self analysis regardless of the sad ending of the story.
