This was beautifully filmed and acted, but apparently the plot line is way over my head as I don't have much of a clue what is going on, especially in the second half. What I do know is that Asian kids are the cutest in the world. :D

Since there are so many people couldn’t get this movie. The following is my own understanding, hope it could help you to better understand the movie. At the end of the first part, friend of Jing Nian told him to go after Lu Sheng, and Jing Nian did. But I think a car accident was upon Jing Nian. That’s why Lu Sheng didn’t see him on the bridge, but Lu Sheng didn’t know Jing Nian was in a car accident, and that’s why Lu Sheng said he waited for Three years on the bridge but Jing Nian never came. And the boyfriend of the doctor was He Luo, and He Luo died already (cut his own wrist in bathtub). So the doctor seize the chance to make Jing Nian(lost memories) believe that he is He Luo. That’s why, in the hospital, the doctor told Lu Sheng to leave Jing Nian if he wants JingNian to recover. And then the doctor lied to JingNian, told him he was HeLuo. All because the doctor wants his boyfriend(died) back. In the second part, why HeLuo killed that girl? There are two reasons. The first reason is, HeLuo(JingNian)knows she loves LuSheng. When she brings up the name Shen LuSheng, HeLuo(JingNian) repeated the name. I think at that moment, part of his memory was back someway. So he gets jealous. The second reason is the girls found out the secret that HeLuo promised to keep. The secret was the tapes. And also, at the end of movie, HeLuo said in the tape he will keep the secret for Jin Nian. So to keep the secret, he killed the girl. Last part, by the seaside, HeLuo already knew he is JingNian. He cannot accept that he once killed someone, and once loved the doctor JiangHan--the man who lied all this time. So, HeLuo(JinNian) chose to die and he said: LuSheng, I’m sorry, Please let me go.

I just watched Part 1 then I found a second part had been made and having watched it, what was made was nothing like I hoped it would be, in fact, it was not only disappointing, it was also confusing because the narrative was so disjointed and it just didn't end sadly, it was tragic. One has to wonder why people make films like these all the time.

You must be related to the filmmakers, as this flick was so complicated and convoluted as to be impossible to decipher, especially on first watch. Great acting but seems to me the students who made this film just wanted to get off on how artsy and super duper twisty their story was, never mind if anyone outside the immediate circle of artists could figure out what the hell was going on. There's such a thing as a simple story being the most powerful; it's the HOW it's told that makes the difference. Good god, suicides, murders, plastic surgery, betrayal, homosexuality, heterosexuality, amnesia, malpractice, love, hate...it took Game of Thrones several years to tell the same story and here we have 50 minutes. lol. Not happening.

The lead actor can be seen in a 2020 film Youths in the Breeze. This film is not as complicated as it seems. It makes you follow the storyline as it epps and flows. In other words pay close attention.

This is another sad example of the writer/director/creator or whatever being so impressed with his own creativity, he created something not many can follow, much less comprehend. He seemed to have forgotten about his audience, even though he supposedly created this work for them.

I am relieved to read your words, to know I am not the only one who had this experience. However, as this is student work, let me offer some thoughts from an older person with some decades in theater and film: The production quality was very good. The acting sincere and the director knew how to use actors and their craft to tell their story. Well done. However, the authorship, as you noted, was too complex to follow. It needed more clues for us to know who is who. Hiding what happened and the double identity until the very end just left us with 20 minutes of utter confusion. This is very like the problems with M. Knight Sham.'s films: organic, resonant storytelling is given over for the golden prize of cleverness. This is always a fatal flaw in storytelling. One cannot impose one's own will on a story: one must learn to listen to a story as it tells itself. That sounds esoteric, but it is the vital difference in making any kind of art. Listening rather than talking. As I teach my students: "It's NOT what you THINK it is; it's what it is on its own."

I enjoyed the cinematography and the acting. The story became too complex for me or there wasn't enough detail for me to keep up. I was confused by the end. To be fair I am a fairly simple person so anything too abstract is out of my league.

No. You're right, it was too complicated for a four-hour film, let alone the 50 minutes we got here. Writer or writers getting off on their own supposed cleverness, to the detriment of the film. I'd say about 2/3 of the plot line could have been cut.

Someone explained the 2nd part in the comments. I just like to share my interpretation too, albeit it's almost the same as the other comment. The first part, Jiangnian and LouSheng clearly has feelings for each other. But LouSheng was indecisive, he wasn't ready to face the harsh reality of love between two men. As a result, he hurt Jiangnian over and over again. He didn't know he inflicted a wound large enough for Jiangnan's heart to be left scarred (in which can be seen during the 2nd part). The 2nd part is mostly about LouSheng's regret, Jiangnan's recovery and it has taken a more serious and dark turn with the doctor's entrance. The 2nd part ties the knot that was left unresolved for years between LouSheng and Jiangnian. In the 2nd part, Jiangnan got into an accident which caused him to lost his memories and damaged his face. LouSheng asked the doctor (Han Jiang) how he could help, the doctor said by 'leaving him'. So Lousheng entrusted Jiangnian's recovery to the doctor, he told their past to the doctor so the doctor could help Jiangnian recover his memories. But contrary to what he said, the doctor instead suppressed Jiangnian's memories. I think he made Jiangnian underwent plastic surgery and made his face look like the original Lou He. The original Lou He died but the doctor couldn't accept it that's why he delude himself and tried to relieve him in Jiangnian's person. He hypnotized Jiangnian into making himself believe that he is 'Lou He' and he made him think that he's sick and has multiple personality disorder. The doctor is convinced that he was just 'helping' Jiangnian, because he knew Jiangnian couldn't actually forget about LouSheng, so he said (42:48) 'I just want to help you forget about the subjective memories and restore a new self consciousness, who treats those memories as another person's memory'. That is why in Jiangnian's mind, he is currently 'Lou He' and 'Chen Jiangnan' was another person (his split personality). His recurring dreams of 'Chen Jiangnian' was because it was his original self trying to resurface. But the doctor made it seem like his illness was getting worse, and made him take medicine (which is instead of helping him recover his memories, I think it was more meant to suppress). However, Jiangnian discovered about the doctor's secret (43:09). (Idk which secret he refers to, but maybe it's the fact that he wasn't really Lou He) But he doesn't plan to expose the doctor. JiangYi found out about that secret too that's why she was killed. (I'm not sure who really killed JiangYi though, the doctor said it was him but on Jiangnian's memory it was him. Maybe that's also part of his subjective memories, or maybe the doctor find out Jiangnian killed Jiangyi so his secret wouldn't be exposed so, in a way, he was the one who killed Jiangyi?) Anyway, continuation to the tape, Jiangnian also said that he thinks he had fallen to Han (the doctor). But unlike the doctor, he wasn't brave enough to be together with the person he loves. I think Jiangnian made the decision that time to leave the doctor, because he also knew he won't recover his memories anyway. That's why at 40:58, the doctor didn't find him, he only found the tapes. The doctor expressed at that moment his regret. His plan backfired and he instead pushed Jiangnan away. Unexpectedly, Jiangnan still managed to recover his memories upon contact with LouSheng. LouSheng didn't recognized him (that's why I was convinced he went under plastic surgery), but although his face changed, his eyes didn't (24:25). He still recognized him and tried to to talk to him about it (27:00) in which the doctor panicked and told him not to meet LouSheng because he was afraid Jiangnan would remember, after all LouSheng is special to Jiangnian's heart. So when LouSheng came one night and in a drunken stupor apologized to him and called him by his name, that's when Jiangnian recalled. He recalled JiangYi and by the time they got to the sea, when Jiangnian touched 'his old self', that's the cue he remembered everything. And as the other comment says, just like when they were kids (21:34), Jiangnan asked for 30 secs. LouSheng found him before but this time, LouSheng didn't. I think Jiangnian himself wants to forget and escape LouSheng, that's why he said to himself (45:56) 'Jiangnian, the choice is up to you'. Therefore, the choice that he made, was for LouSheng to let him go. 47:03. Maybe after everything, he was convinced that they weren't meant to be together (41:36). In the past, he had given all his love for LouSheng. But this time, he wants to leave room for himself. At the very least, that's how I see it. Pls note that is isn't as accurate, everyone are free to make their own interpretations!

Uh, I explained the plot as I understood it to my friends who watched it, so I guess I'll just copy paste what I've put together Please note that this is only a personal interpretation of my hyperactive brain !! - 1st movie time - SLS and CJN met as child and became friends - eventually fell in love - but because SLS is stubborn, CJN ends up leaving as an exchange student - 2 years after CJN left - CJN has an accident?? - like, a very bad accident which made him lose his memory and damaged his face very badly - SLS is here and ask the psy what he can do to help - to which the psy answers that he should leave - anyway the psy, upon saying he will help CJN remembers, starts feeding him other memories - he turns CJN into Luo He (THAT'S VERY FUCKED UP) (the original LH apparently died from suicide) - and one day LH find the vhs tapes left by CJN and starts to record his own tape in which he says he has fallen in love with the psy - 3 years after CJN left, 1 year after the accident - JiaYi is SLS's friend since they're like, 15 - she likes SLS but he says he can't forget that one person - so she hires LH to play the part of her boyfriend (for reasons unclear, that was too Straight for me) - anyway she drinks and she finds a box with vhs tapes - LH asks to not touch it, and she starts making a move on him - which he doesn't like, and end up killing her - he dumps her body in the ocean and tries to kill himself (??) - but he has like a vision of CJN saving him - also him drowning while CJN appears to save him is a recurrent dream of his (probably linked to the fact that well, he is CJN) - anyway a month later, SLS asks to see him - and LH has like a flash and calls SLS LuSheng - and that's when SLS unconsciously realizes that it's CJN - then drink and go on the bridge where they separated, and LSL thank LH - later SLS comes drunk to LH's appartment, and calls him JingNian (my heA R T) - LH has a flash and now remembers he killed JiaYi - so he runs away - SLS pursues him because he knows he's CJN - they hug!!!! - but then just like when they were kids, CJN puts his hand on SLS's eyes and asks him for an advance of 30s - BUT THEN WE HAVE A VOICEOVER OF SLS SAYING HE LOST FOR THE FIRST TIME - SO I GUESS CJN FLED - AND THEY NEVER SAW EACH OTHER AGAIN AND EVERYTHING HURTS AND I AM SOB B I N G

There was no good reason why LH/CJN drowns himself at the end. He realizes he did not kill the girl; that was the crazy doctor who did it. And he finally finds his love, but then drowns himself (for the 2nd time? not sure?)? ARG!!!!

Forgive my being critical: but this is about artists learning from each other. You clearly have talent in making compelling film. My elder's advice is: learn to generate stories organically and avoid imposing your won ideas so heavily on stories. I learned to do this when I was a student by humbly accepting other people's (well written) stories to direct. It taught me how to serve story and avoid the indulgence of my own will and intellect which can be dangerous for a director if he allows them to overpower the organic narrative.

So the childhood friend & the psychiatrist knew the patient true identity right from the start? The childhood friend agreed to keep the secret for the patient’s sakes & to keep a distance as promised until the patient remembered his past & memories on his own without other people forcing him? But out of love for his ex, the psychiatrist turned the patient into someone else (into his ex) with different memories because the psychiatrist missed his ex who committed suicide? Was the patient used to be the psychiatrist patient (when he was his old self, seeing a psychiatrist due to depression or something)? Did the patient found the recorded tapes (accidentally) at one point without realising that they were from his old self and followed the same way by recording his feelings & thoughts (sort of therapy & confession? When the psychiatrist said he “killed someone”, did he mean he felt guilty for changing the patient’s memories & regretted for his actions which caused the death of the patient as he found out that the patient confessed that he had fallen in love with him (when watching the tapes, the patient confessed his love for the psychiatrist), something the psychiatrist didn’t expect as the patient wasn’t his ex but somehow having an “altered” person to confess his love for him, the psychiatrist felt guilty & sad for his actions? Did the psychiatrist also know that the patient killed the girl & changed his memories to protect the patient? So in the end the patient regained his memories but due to remorse of killing someone, he decided to commit suicide and died? 🤯 headache, so confusing.

I agree, people should be able too see the difficulties but also be shown the ways to overcome them, to be told not to give up because they can then finally find happiness! There are too many negative thoughts and endings in this world now as people see no way to go forward and they get to believe they will never be happy. Please create these deeply emotional films, but give hope and guidance to viewers......this is a much harder film to make, a hopeful, positive or happy ending!
