As an apprentice my biggest frustration is when I can't fix something the first time. I'm hungry and luckily I have a great boss who can steer me out of the woods. I used to be afraid I would disappoint him if I couldn't do an efficient job. He told me I can never disappoint him and that this job is always a learning experience. I hope you all have a company/family that treats you like this. If you're a boss be a great boss and you'll have employees for life.

My dislike for this trade has been with people, I'm very passionate about this trade. When I work with un-motivated people it drives me up the wall. Now granted I'm an owner and have an owners mindset. But even before being an owner I still had an owners mindset. I always treat the equipment like it's my own and I treat the customers like they are family. Honesty and passion will get you a long way in this trade!

Came back installed, still had issues, ripped apart the exposed ductwork on roof and found the return blocked by a ceiling tiles, customer didn't say anything. They blocked it after I left the first call, the exhaust was pulling heat trough the return on hot days when unit was down. Lol

Best thing to do is get a hobby your passionate about. When HVAC get you down you have your hobby to concentrate on. Burn out is common in this field. Especially if your family is not on board. If they don't understand the long hours, the late nights, the early mornings , And make it feel like all your hard work is not appreciated because it inconvents them then burn out is common.

Good video man ! I’ve had many weeks or days like you have had over the years. They suck. Just gotta keep going , I’ve wanted to quit this trade many times over the years just from different reasons . Being exhausted and burnt out , pissed off , every job you touch something goes wrong etc. the list goes on and on. Lol. But deep down I love it and the bad days pass . Just gotta step back sometimes and regroup and move on and don’t dwell on it then the good days come back.

I just started my 24 th year in the commercial hvac industry. I love the work, I love to be challenged and when the busy seasons comes it gets crazy. We all have those days, usually my frustration is because of people - sometimes a boss, customer, apprentice or another journey man very seldom is it because of the work. There have been times I asked myself what am I doing, do I want to do this anymore thinking the work. I take some time to think about it and it’s always the same answer. I love the work and my frustration I’m feeling towards the work is usually related to people. I try to look at myself and fix me first with out trying to sound corny. That’s just the way it is. Were responsible for us. Good post thanks for being real.

I have several problems with the HVAC industry. #1 is the quality control (or lack there of) with the manufacturers, I'm tired of making excuses why their brand new unit has such major problems so early on. Now I usually just say " they sure don't make them like they used to". #2 the engineers have basically supplanted a lot of the troubleshooting I used to do. With many pieces of equipment you cannot identify the problem without going through tech support, that seems to be happening more and more. Many times I feel like a parts changer.

Getting divorced threw a wrench into my mind-set. I've also had plenty of times that hours wear me down and burn me out, but I just have to remind myself why I love the field, during those times I try to start learning something new (or refreshing myself), during slower times when I'm in the office a lot, getting out of the office and having some customer interaction helps me. HVAC is my life, I love what we do, but like everyone else I'm human and have bad days or days I don't wanna work. I think a passion for learning helps to prevent burn-out as there's so much to this industry.

In my experience they tend to happen when you’re dealing with something relatively new to you. It also can happen when you’re relatively new as well. Most of the hurdles I’ve had to overcome have been with family time and my employers views of family time. All in all this is a great field to be in with soooo many different avenues you can travel.

I love being an HVAC tech and I have always wanted to be a tech since I was a little boy. But, with that said people suck. I was at a place for 4 years and it just went downhill. From drama to nothing ever get done on management's side, to losing customers, and a revolving door of techs and dispatchers. I just had it and I had to quit. It killed my moral, I ended up becoming sick and tired of going to work, I ended up hating my job, and it affected my home life too. I was on edge and was looking for a fight, finally, I had it and just quit on the spot. Although I don't recommend quitting without a 2-week notice, but let's face it we are HVAC techs and we could easily have jobs the next day, and I did. Needless to say, I went right back to loving my job.

I can relate to that. I worked at a Comapny about a year out of HVAC School. I didnt know anything but this company I was at , was being run into the ground by the owner. They had a great customer base, but they were hurting for cash flow. They underbid all their jobs to get money coming in, and that made it worse. They sent me to a customer that wasn't even mine to help another tech finish up and they even asked me to get the check from them so they could rush it to the bank by COB. They sent the Secretary to pick up the check.

I really felt my company just cared about a tech getting to the house to collect the service charge. Quit hvac after 6 months and went to commercial maintenance and made way more money and way less stress. I actually liked coming to work. That only lasted a couple months before i took a job with my local natural gas company. Making way more money than i ever had. Anybody new to hvac there are alot of options available if straight hvac isnt working for you. And i definitely see why hvac guys say go commercial over residential. Good luck to everybody

While I was working in HVAC and Refrigeration, my brother asked me to visit a junior college with him because he didn't want to go alone. I went to an HVAC technical school and worked for four years in mostly refrigeration but did some A/C work too. I installed and serviced mostly residential A/C's, Perlick beer and soda systems, ice machines, walk-in coolers, installed the electrical, piping, drains, etc. It was fun for a while but I got tired of the heavy lifting (carrying heavy walk-in panels) and working in hot attics. I started out working for small companies and didn't make much money at first. I held an HVACR contractor's license for a short time and I have an EPA certification from Mainstream Engineering. I know four years of experience doesn't seem like much but I didn't have any problem passing any of the licensing tests.

Good Evening All, Once again a great video from our mentor at AK HVAC. I'm not a person who complains but I do have a few problems that I would like to share with everyone. Maybe you guys can provide some helpful suggestions. I've been an apprentice for six months. The most recurring problem I have is that a situation makes me look like a dumb-ass even though I wasn't able to stop it happening in the first place. For example, we are running refrigerant lines on a split system air-conditioning unit, we are running it through the roof trusses. So the other guy goes downstairs to pull the line while I stay upstairs. The line gets wedged between where the trusses meet. It takes me a while to try to free it, but it gets stuck again, making me look incompetent. Other times, I'm told to go fetch something from the van, but its not there, and the other guy gets angry at me. Or when I'm trying to do something myself (which takes a bit longer) so the other guy demands that I move out of the way so he could complete the task quicker (or with less error)... It frustrates me because all these little things hinder my learning on the job... What can I do? Help.....

Hey Andrew. I’ve been so busy that I had to look at this video twice. It’s a great video. Now about your question. I guess that dealing with people is the toughest for me. And it was not the outer customer. In other words not the ones who put food on my table but the guys that I work with. I’ll give you 2 examples. The first one was about 10 years ago I had a field supervisor that didn’t like the way that I wrapped the wires on a condenser fan motor for an Intellipak. He decided to take pictures and show my service manager. I was fortunate in that my service manager was a good friend of mine. I found out through the vine. I thought. What a schmuck. The second one was a co worker who always tried to work early so he could go home early. He had a contract that he spent 80 hours a month on. He got home early one day and received a call for this contract. I was on call. It was summer and I was looking at getting home a little early to rest. His response to the dispatcher was “Let the on call guy take it “. I was livid. What a shmuck. Anyways I went through an unwanted attitude adjustment which helped me to be able to handle anybody. Life’s too short to have bad feelings for people. I love my trade. I look forward to going to work everyday. By the way. Seeing your truck reminds me that I have to clean mine. Great video again Andrew! Keep em coming. God bless.

So I have a solid foundation for my time in the trade. Though I know I have much to learn. I love this job. I bought a bunch of tools and make sure the work is done right. But I'm mostly grinding "tunes" out all day. I feel like a mindless drone sometimes. If I find a leaking coil under warranty and I get to put in a new one, that's an exciting day for me. I want to do more problem solving and diverse work. This company gave me a chance, has an awesome culture and pays decent. But I'm not happy with the stultifying work.

What a great video. I have been in the HVAC/R world for a long time about 30 + years! I still struggle with the job and what it takes from you emotionally and physically. I don't think that ever goes away. It's a very demanding job and is very gratifying as well. But will take it's toll on you if you let it! My father Rest in peace told me to do it as long as you can. I don't want to discourage the new recruits so to speak. It's still an awesome trade, You put into it and you will get out of it a lot of satisfaction. Just my Two cents sorry to ramble!

Had a week or so like this this summer. I'm either too stubborn to quit or too stupid.... Haven't figured that one out but I keep going and everything seems to work itself out. I just try and stay positive while it's all going on or at the very least keep the negative thoughts to myself. Anything to keep any negativity from affecting The way I communicate with coworkers and customers. It always works out, I learn what it is I'm supposed to learn from it and still love my job. HVAC can really be a stressful career 🤣 I just try and deal with it with as much humility and positivity as possible 👍

just want i just came across your channel and so far i like the channel. Not to disclose company names here, but I believe we are of the same company just different branches. One topic that you could address is safety and such. something both of us know is pretty heavy with our trade as well as our particular company.
@AKHVAC6 жыл бұрын
Great idea, and yes it's something ive planned on doing for some time. Thanks for watching man!
@countrykid16406 жыл бұрын
no problem at all, keep it up. Its great content for sure. when you do hit the safety topic, dont forget about anyone working on air cooled chillers. Since we have a solution to "safely" work on top of them with the new fall restraint system, and arc flash. I just went over a bit of Arc flash with one of our new guys. He was a bit mind blown.

I recently quit my job working as an installer (residential/commercial). Even though I have school and my certifications I understand I am one of the new guys to the industry. What do you think of the people who have been in the industry for years and make work hell for new guys like myself? Talking crap, being unprofessional, being degrading, and telling us that we shouldn't be in the industry just because we are new? I'm out in the Vegas are and the work itself was great but my coworkers were too much for me to keep dealing with.
@maxramsey56276 жыл бұрын
No offence to you mate you might not be like this but we have some now guys in our company that are fully qualified but can’t do anything without being shown how to do it. So it’s frustrating when there are two of you on a job and someone getting nearly the same money as you because he’s qualified is slowing you down because he doesn’t know what he’s doing plus we do give each other shit in general but it’s mostly banter.
@MaceValor6 жыл бұрын
Max Ramsey oh i totally feel ya man, and i take zero offense. I didn't go indepth with everything but my situation was a tad bit more than that. These guys were doing shit like throwing tools at me, shaking the ladder while i was on it, telling me every day that i was a piece of shit and they hoped i fucked something up and get fired or just quit. Management and HR pretty much ignored it since these guys had been with them so long. I do have experience in the field prior to working with them, mostly in dealing with res. Non ops and some installing. Commercial was new to me and was really excited to get into it. I just couldnt keep working with these guys at a company that didnt hold safety as a priority.

Trade has been great to me yes! Most of the time it's your employer or client's that make you hate HVAC. Dont think leaving one company for another will fix all issues each company has it's own issues, if you work for yourself you will have your own issue that will make you hate the trade from time to time. We are human unfortunately this will be a cycle of up and down. Funny you showed the truck, my helper and I just went thru both of my service trucks today man did I find some things but if feels good to be organized !!

I don't think that I can work 60+ hours a week without burnout. Did you seriously say 70 or 80 hours a week? I might be able to work less than a month at 10-11 hour days, 7 days a week but not the night shift. Should I forget about this trade?
@MrDJSkeptik3 жыл бұрын
I am 30 years in. This trade is ruthless and unforgiving, not to mention thankless. I would not have done this had I known how brutal the demand on me would be. Getting up in the middle of the night to go up on a roof is not uncommon. My last employer said that we should ask for relief if our weekly hour load hit 75 hrs. Got that? 75 hours before you are allowed to cry about it. I am burned out like you wouldn't believe.
@lareconquista16962 жыл бұрын
@@MrDJSkeptik Wow 30 years my respect. What would you say to a college hvac student that is not sure if he likes the trade? Should he just take the certificate he has already completed and work? or risk finishing then finding out the career is not for him?

Dude my work truck always looks like that! Good video... cause seeing all your guys' immaculate vans had me feeling like a real shitbag. But when you're slammed, you're slammed..sometimes there's no time to be organizing the rig. You're missing one very important item in your van though...the hammock hanging rack to rack!! People get a little weirded out when you come crawling out of the back with your boots off, but who cares. But I will say this, your work truck page motivated me to clean up my act a little bit and buy some milk crates, hard cases and tackle boxes and what not. This has not only made my truck more clean and organized, but I'm more productive and not buying crap/doubling up on stuff I don't need cause I can't find it in my truck.

Im impressed with your knowledge and passion you have for this trade ive been doing hvac/refrigeration since i was 16 im now 33 so i got 17 years under my belt, its the only job/career ive had. Its extremely easy to get bitter, angry and lose your passion for this trade. Usually due to customers giving a hard time about anything. I love being a tech and truly enjoy what i do so its nice to see another who is so driven and positive, keep making these videos there legit.

I'm a newbie, 15 years. But I don't install, and I think we get our TXV's from Danfoss. Or I'll usually say, "Get me a TXV for a Carrier coil model # blah blah." I don't really control who makes the parts.
