There's something existentially scary about thinking that anytime anywhere on the internet you could just get jumpscared through no fault of your own
@Jenna_Talia
@Jenna_Talia 2 жыл бұрын
There's also the fact that a lot of screamers (nicknamed void memes iirc) don't just have a creepy face pop up, they have the loudest earrape possible and deepfry/contort the image so much that it plays with your primal emotions. I remember there being one of Dash's teacher from the incredibles, where instead of going "coincidence? I think NOT!" he would instead go "coincidence? I think-" and then he would turn into a screamer. The video was so potent that it was the one video out of many to actually spark debate on whether or not it's okay to share those things around. Basically, what if someone with heart problems sees one.

This video made me realize something. I have this habit of always checking the comments of a video while the first few seconds are being played. It's been so long that I misremembered and attributed this habit to hyperactivity, but watching this made the memories flood back. @@CanularRadio I'm taking a wild guess based on an arachnophobic person's reactions and how we've gotten around the, err, issue: Basically screamers tend to be all about being unpredictable and coming out of nowhere with no warning AFTER tricking you into thinking there's nothing there and it's normal. Now what's the oldest "joke" about paranoia? "It's not paranoia if they're REALLY out to get you." Basically the equivalent of telling an arachnophobe that you don't have any spiders in your house and then you shove your pet tarantula's tank in their face.

The screamer that got me is a club penguin video that advertised an infinite money glitch. It said watch until the end, but I hadn't encounter too many screamers before so I didn't catch the hint. The evil thing about it was the video seemingly buffered and then gave the KZbin "this video is no longer available" error before screaming, so everytime something buffered after that I would take my headphones off or mute the volume before making sure the video was actually buffering. Screamers are a trend I won't miss.

My first screamer was also Club Penguin but I think the video is lost. It was a video tutorial explaining how to get a rainbow puffle (before they existed) and I was following it step by step. I had two tabs open in my browser, KZbin and Club Penguin. Towards the end of the video I switched tabs to the game only to hear really warped clown music playing really loudly. When I switched tabs to see what the sound was, I was met with the image of a clown with no eyes and a long tongue smiling at me. The music itself is the weird part because my memory wants to say that it was a song from the soundtrack of Ghostbusters, but I think that's me misremembering. I've been searching for this video for years but can't find it. Tl;Dr fake Club Penguin rainbow puffle tutorial had a bloody clown screamer

I remember my uncle would hit me with these constantly because I had "funny" reactions. Eventually he dressed up in a monster costume and chased me down in my house. I was maybe 8 years old. Now, over a decade later, I have trouble looking out windows or mirrors in case there's something there. Even when it subsides enough, I can't enjoy horror content half the time because it'll make that paranoia resurface again. It's not like a hallucination, it's like, something in my brain *knows* this is exactly how the jumpscare goes. I look in the mirror, my reflection opens its mouth and climbs out and gets me. It feels silly but it never really went away for me.

I'm so glad you brought up the Bongcheon-Dong Ghost! Most screamers were just cheap gags to get a scare out of people, but that one was legitimately impressive in how it subverts your expectations and uses the experience of scrolling through a webcomic to heighten the fear. Losing the ability to control what you're seeing by scrolling and then removing the saftey of the comic being static and contained is so much more effective than just a spooky picture and a loud scream. Such a shame that the death of Flash reduced its impact.

I remember this era. I was a kid, around preteen age toward the end of it all. There were also a bunch of videos that i got sucked into about "haunted dolls" and ghost sightings. Theres one video, removed years ago, that ive been trying to find any trace of since. I remember watching it but have nothing but my own memory to confirm it was a real thing once. A little girl, presumably an actress from a recently released horror film, sits in a chair next to the host of a TV talk show, an older man, with another man on her other side not saying anything. The TV host is going on as normal, talking about how fasinating it is to have her there, and she's responding like any other kid in her position. Then she stops, stares at the host as her pupils dilate to take up the entirety of her eyes. She says, in a more serious tone of voice "You're going to be hit by a bus today, Bob" before making a loud slurping noise as she licks her lips. Everything is quiet. The host has heavy confusion and concern on his face as his eyes flicker from the girl to the camera. Then the video ends.

ugh the "what's wrong with this image" ones... I don't know if it was my "first" screamer, but the one I remember the earliest was one of those "when you see it" pics that was actually a GIF. It flashed good ol' Jeffy boy in my face and I recall jumping back in my chair and swearing at the screen. Sidenote: the JTK pic still creeps me out at 22 and I still can't look at it for long without feeling paranoid. I am not proud of this.

I’m glad someone made a respectful, non-prank video about these, finally! I’m very glad screamers aren’t really a thing anymore, as I had my fair share of trauma from these things as a kid. I still distinctly remember my worst example of it (although it wasn’t my first screamer, that I cannot remember). My parents were watching the Super Bowl downstairs, Beyoncé was performing and they were super into it. I was upstairs on the computer, browsing KZbin unsupervised at the age of maybe… oh I don’t know, I must have been 7 or 8? I’m 20 years old now, if anyone wants to double check the year Beyoncé performed at the Super Bowl lol. Anyway, I had clicked on a video that apparently was supposed to show a car crashing into a train. I was a kid, I was morbidly curious, so I click on it. It’s one of those terrible CCTV cameras that moves at 0.5 frames per second, and shows a train slowly approaching an intersection with a road. Obviously I’m looking really closely at it to not miss the whole point of the video… and bam, an image of a giant skull with flames shooting out of it on one side of its face and a horrible screaming noise. Looking back I’m sure the image wasn’t really all that scary, but to 8 year old me I was fucking terrified. I’ve tried to track down this video or even just the image of the screamer since then but I haven’t been able to find it… unfortunately? Fortunately? Anyways, my mom was totally encapsulated by the halftime show on the television that she completely ignored my bawling ass as I ran downstairs away from the computer and didn’t touch it for another week and a half. Again, I’d seen screamers before, but they were with other people crowded around the computer. This was me, alone upstairs in the dark, exploring the internet on my own. Even today I still instinctively clench up and put a finger in front of my line of sight when I see a video linger on a single image too long. Edit: I found the video!! Thanks to your video I found that the screamer wiki is a thing that exists, scrolled thru it a while and found the video. As it turns out, I misremembered the image- it wasn’t a flaming skull but an edit of Jada Pinkett Smith from Scream 2, with half of her face ripped off and a bit of blood on her skull. I guess I remembered that half of the skull was there and the other half had something else going on, but I couldn’t remember exactly what it was. I feel weirdly nostalgic watching this despite the heavy trauma it set in my head lol. I suppose it’s also pretty great being able to “scan” through the timeline on the video to see when it was gonna happen hahaha, so it’s nowhere near as scary anymore. screamers and jumpscares are why i STILL have trust issues with videos, scary or not, but mainly scary, and therefore why i truly do tend to watch only a few people for horror content even though i enjoy horror content. i couldnt tell you my first one cause they all blend together in a mush of 'scared the living daylights out of baby me' but one i always remember is my brother telling me to watch him play a game on the family computer (ah, early 2010s, when family computers were still a thing) and i was like oh okay. it was the maze game. i remember being so scared that i started crying after i screamed. i still hate the idea of looking at that exorcist girls face at all because of it. also fun fact i was so apprehensive to screamers that i knew by the way people talked about them that the car one was one... but i never fell for it. it was only this very video that i finally saw the end of it... and its just a lame looking zombie? over a decade or so of avoiding it for that? damn. i hate jumpscares for a lot of reasons, but especially because of screamers. im extremely glad that that era on the internet is almost entirely just history by now.

I think my first screamer was GTA San Andreas Ghost on TV (or smth close to it), back when my obsession with GTA SA myths were at its peak. It wasn't overly terrifying or anything, no scary faces, just some screenshot of a guy mid-shouting with a loud noise jumping out at you after the subtitles tell you to focus on the TV in CJ's house. Still startled the heck out of me though lol The subsequent ones that I encountered were certainly more evil than my first one, though, and they pretty much left a lasting impact in my life. I've become so adept in spotting telltale signs of screamers that even today in videos that aren't screamers at all, whenever I see/hear anything unusual that could potentially set up for a jumpscare (unusually long silences, suspicious zooming in, the mere act of bringing up the topic of screamers) instinctively makes me pause the video. These things can really change your perception on things lol In any case, I think a reup of that video exists on YT rn if you'd like to view it

my first screamer I found on a weird website that had a collection of flash games on it. I remember there was spank the monkey and a sort of point and click adventure game. One of the "games" involved a spining, red and yellow spiral. The text on screen said "watch closely for a minute, and your vision will start spinning!" or something to that effect. And, of course, after about 20 seconds a screaming weasel's head popped up along with a screaming noise. It didn't really scare or startle me at all, and I was confused why it showed up. I watched the video several times because I was a naive kid and actually believed that watching the spiral would make my vision spin, so I kept trying to get that to happen. And, of course, the one that actually scared me was scary maze game. I found the images about "if you see it, you'll shit brix" a lot more fun and scary, because the "jumpscare" was solely dependent on you scouring the image for something scary.

I think my first one has also been lost to time. It was a slideshow that my dad had downloaded on his computer, which showed a series of photos that supposedly had ghosts contained in them. At first, it was completely innocent, just showing some old photos and pointing out the "ghost" hidden in them (though, I'm pretty sure most of them were just due to the shutters that cameras had back in the day). Then, just before the last one, the text on screen asked "What's between the trees?" It then switch to an image of a completely normal forest filled with a bunch of trees, and the only thing that was between any of them were sun rays. But after about three of seconds, it was replaced with an image of a black eyed dude screaming in your face, even though the rest of the sequence was completely silent and then ended with some sort of sendoff message (I don't remember what it was) with an evil laugh that accompanied it. I only saw that thing once, but it stuck with me a long time, even making me fear completely normal slideshows that my church would show of their missionaries' trips!

My first screamer was a video called "The scariest image in the world" (translated from german). The creator talks to the viewer via default windows movie maker text that they found the scariest image in the world and debates with themself, if they should show it to you. Eventually, an image of the teletubbies is shown and the creator explains, he decided not to show it, but that all lies have a kernel of truth in them. Then the actual screamer happens with a detailed fan-art of Spongebob with his jaw unnaturally wide open. I can't find the exact video anymore, only versions without the spongebob image. I've been thinking about this a lot. Okay, so by your definition, a screamer is found outside of a horror context. A video or movie where you wouldn't expect a jumpscare. So, like a music video or something. And a jumpscare is found within horror media. Self explanatory. So, by that definition. The Parrot scene from Citizen Kane is the first /screamer/ And the jumpscare from Cat People is the first /jumpscare./

The video that scarred me the worst wasn't a screamer but a horror themed video where a guy was working late in an office building with uncanny looking environments. He just woke up from a nap, because a flock of crows outside the building were screaming really loudly. He looks inside of his monitor, which shows a narrow hole he can grab into. For some reason he starts climbing inside and the hole just keeps getting darker. He crawls further inside and all of a sudden the crows start picking against his office window. He gets scared and crawls faster, while the crows try to break the window. The tension rises and when the birds breaks his windows he panics and keeps crawling. The crows fly in through his monitor and pick him to death which was shown in a really gruesome way. When the crows scream he wakes up from his nap finishing the loop. Yeah...this video scrwed me up bad when I was a kid. Worst part about it is I can't find it anywhere. I hope somebody has a clue!

Near the end, you get to stuff the turkey, when suddenly, it would come back to life and jumpscare me! I cried afterwards. Edit: Oh! I nearly forgot to mention Dreader! I was older when I first played it (19), but I think it still counts. It’s loosely based upon the Scary Maze Game. However, unlike the Maze, Dreader just shows you that something is wrong, giving you, well, dread. Let’s just say that spooky scary skeletons get involved.

Man this video is like therapy. I got hit with two really bad screamers almost back to back when I was around 8-9 and honestly I still get moments of unease sometimes where my cursor automatically rests on the X until I can verify that it's safe. The first one was the 'Ghost in the London Dungeon' video (still up). It just does way too good a job of luring you in with the premise and getting you to get as close to the screen as possible. The actual screamer itself is also fairly unique I think since I've never seen it used anywhere else. Gotta thank my dad for this one and while he had a good laugh about it I've never experienced such a visceral reaction to something scary, not before or since. The second one which I think is still around somewhere although it probably died with Flash is the 'Color Blind Test' game thing which shows you numbers made up of colorful mosaics and you have to type in what number you see. It's all fun and games until it gives you something that really doesn't look like a number and so you stare at it and stare at it and you know what happens next. I think this screamer was just some bad jpeg of a face and some blood but that combined with the loud audio was enough for a second dose of trauma. Browsing the internet just hasn't been the same since, in more ways than one.

I don't remember my first screamer, but the one that scared me the most was this image at 3:50. I remember seeing this image in a Dora the Explorer YTP and it scared all life out of me. i remember the comments where talking about how they got scared by the screamer at the end as well. it makes me mad now because the image is an edited picture of a stock image, at least i'm pretty sure.

I was a big The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time fan as a kid, and I can’t remember the video exactly, but there was one talking about a secret Shark Cage Easter Egg in the Lake Hylia Laboratory. It showed Link looking in first person at the shark, and then that typical jumpscare face showed up. It was pretty scary, and it made me not watch Zelda videos on KZbin for a while.

I have 2 video game screamer memories myself. Both were creepypastas and took place in the early-mid 2010s. The first video showed Mario exploring a Ghost House yard. Within the first minute, Regan McNeil shows up with no warning, but had a different female scream. The second video was a romhack showcase. At some point in the video, the player closes the game and investigates the suspicious .exe file that came with the romhack. Immediately after opening the application, he gets hit with the Jeff the Killer screamer from Findminecraft. It had no flashing lights, but was still loud as hell. 💀

You brought this memory back from the depths of my mind. I remember one day I got home from school and found a cool web browser game, it wasn’t the maze, it was a genuinely fun arcade shooter. I played the game for around an hour straight, upgrading my ship and doing mission, before getting hit by the classic Reagan screamer edited to be scarier. The fact that they had the jumpscare so far into the game, I was caught with my pants molecularly obliterated. that traumatized me enough to be terrified browsing any web page for years. Also one of the scariest “screamers” was a horror webcomic where a character is unexpectedly animated, jumpscaring you by turning around and revealing themselves to have a bloody and shredded face, I believe pewdipie reacted to it back then. edit: YOOOO you actually covered the comic!

My first Screamer was an old flash game of naught's and crosses against a computer opponent. If you were about to win the screamer would pop up. My dad got 7 year old me with that one lmao

I saw the maze happen at a friend's house to someone that his step brother had over. Ever since I saw that I always assumed that anything anyone linked me was out to get me so this never really happened to me. Lol

I used to binge those "subliminal messages" videos when I was a kid. It probably wasn't my first, but I have a vivid memory of an image of a crowd of people, one part circled in red, with "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt playing in the background - then a screamer appeared: a black-and-white face that probably had some blood on it. I remember insisting that I'd sit it out because I was a big kid, but turning the volume down out of fear after a few seconds lmao ALSO my brother-in-law showed me the Bongcheon-Dong Ghost a while ago and istg it shook me up for a solid two weeks. I was probably 17 at the time. I can still remember the cracking sound her neck made on the first 'jumpscare' ;;

Thank you so much for not playing any of the screamers. You kept true to your word and I truly appreciate that. “What’s wrong with this picture” was my first screamer, then the scary car zombie. Hell, even a Scooby-Doo game formerly hosted on the same site as that Garfield game called “Escape From the Coolsonian” had a screamer in it, when you looked inside the sarcophagus. The text asked players to come closer and then a grotesque mummy face filled the screen with a loud scream. Scared me and my brother. Don’t really know if this is a screamer, but when I was a child, Large Marge from Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure scared the ever living hell out of me because it was so unexpected, and frightening for claymation. She doesn’t exactly scream, but laughs demonically. Was something that traumatized me for years. I’m obviously over it now, but back then, it was nightmare fuel. I’m a huge fan of horror now, and jumpscares don’t affect me as much, then again, it’s like you said, you expect scary things to happen in horror settings, so it’s definitely different.

As someone who was obsessed with scary stuff for as long as I could remember, I usually watched a lot of the old iconic screamer videos, usually knowing that they were screamers and when it was gonna happen. However, the first time I ever got a screamer and didn’t expect it was a video of someone playing through the Turret Cemetery area in Portal 2. They got to the point where the door to the next room was obscured by the little conveyor rail thing carrying doors or something, it’s been too long I can’t remember ALL the details. But then it cut to the white text and blue background asking me if I “saw it”. Honestly with how much I knew about screamers I should have known that I was going to be bombarded by a screaming corpse with bright flashing lights. Honestly I kinda miss screamers. I wish more jumpscares in horror media channeled into that purely aggressive flashbang nature that old internet screamers did.

Holy balls. you had me in your hands the whole video. i was scrolling down like a paranoid trying to avoid screamers. guess i could say my trust issues never disappeared now, my first screamer was the one with the chair. i remember my mom showed it to me and that made me never watch another video she showed me again, until years later, im glad that screamers died with time and they're only a memory now

I can't really remember my first screamer ever, but the first one that impacted me way more than I would like to admit was the MJ ghost one. I was watching that video with my dad, can't remember if he was aware of the screamer beforehand or not, I think he wasn't.. and then when it popped up, I got so scared! Geez..

I don't remember my first one, but one that always stood out was a edited video of "The Duck Song" by forrestfire101. I think it was called "The Duck Song: Alternate Ending" or something like that. Most of the screamers I had tragically placed on me were ones with the exorcist girl in them. Personally, I think this was the one that stapled to me, because it was the least expected out of any screamer I had placed on me on the early days of the internet, plus it was the one that made me have a despise for the trend. I swear, I can't even look at an image of the exorcist girl on google without just having a feeling of uneasiness, like I'm in danger the longer I look at it. It's such an oddity to me, because I seen way worse on the internet now, just not sure why I can't ever feel comfortable when I see her.

My first screamer was Liquid Generation's eye test game. You did a bunch of colorblindness tests, typing in the number you see, but after a set amount of time you'd be hit with a woman covered in blood and broken glass screaming.

Believe it or not, MY first screamer is ALSO lost to time. This one was called "Sonic CD Subliminal Message" (not to be confused with the "Fun is Infinite" pic that's hidden in the game). That video would have a beginning part that said "Not a screamer. Turn up your speakers" which should've already been a red flag, and the video would show the version of the title screen that was used in the original PC version, and the version in Sonic Gems Collection. It would show that screen for a little bit with some music playing, and then suddenly it would cut to that same pic from the "what's wrong with this picture" screamer, and you'd hear a loud scream followed by a violin screech. I remember it scared the shit out of my 10 or 11 year old self, I screamed, stood up and blocked my eyes while the scream and violin screech would play. Then I slowly uncovered my eyes to see a message at the end that said, "I got you good". And oh man that video traumatized me, for a while I would be so scared to click on ANY video coz I didn't know whether or not it was gonna have a screamer. And also in ANY video of Sonic CD that used the PC/Gems Collection version, that title screen that was in those versions would always give me PTSD coz that one was used in that screamer video. But yeah, that was my first screamer, and it's LONG been deleted and no one has ever reuploaded it. lol
