I really dig this stuff. Though, I speak from experience when I say I would highly recommend a lap joint at those beam and post connections. As it is, your vertical load is bearing only on what little sheer strength that all-thread might have, not to mention the fact that you've joined two convex surfaces which will only expose that all-thread to even further torsion stress. That is a fatal failure just waiting to happen. You had the right idea by adding that additional support under the forward beam, but that too needs to be inset into the post if it's to provide any axial support to the vertical load at all. Otherwise, again, you're relying solely on the sheer strength of that all-thread. This applies to your ladder as well. Perhaps even more so, as screws have hardly any sheer strength at all, and you're going to be putting quit a bit of torsion stress on those rungs as you pop up and down that ladder how many ever times a day. Just my two cents... I'd hate to see that thing collapse on you, and while it certainly would have been easier to do before hand, it wouldn't be too terribly difficult to retrofit what you've got so far with a properly supported joint. Cheers!

Wow, I'm going to love these videos. Beautiful place, really cool ideas. My initial impressions are that you need a third, and maybe fourth, dog. If you think about it. You can adjust to view 2 attackers simultaneously. Not so with 3 or 4 (animals know this). I'd get a pit bull, or 2, to add to the pack. I'm not a fan of pit bulls, but they're just the ticket for garden and home protection, and probably eat less than heavier dogs. From what they say about wolverines, I don't think they would back down from a fight with 2 blue healers. Dominant brown boar, same story. Just my guess. James Gary Shelton wrote the best book on brown bears that I have read, and he's from just about right where you are. Critical info there. His first book has most of the critical information in it. In a book I read about adventuring through Africa, the guy asked their native guides if they drink a lot of water, and they responded that they drink a lot in the mornings. I had to presume that this is because, he who goes to the bushes to pee after dark, too many times, does not live to a ripe old age. Cougars are bigger than leopards, so you should understand that you have the same problem. You can say you're more concerned about mosquitoes, but you'd better be concerned about the cougars. Good warm dog houses, so they can be out there on the front lines, all the time. They will create a territory that other predators will avoid as long as they are there. If you go some place and take dogs, you would want to take 2, and leave 2. Leaving one, could lead to a dead dog and a raided garden. Your stove vent goes directly outside. I stayed in a cabin once with a loft that had ample headroom, really tall cabin. They ran the stove vent at an angle, so that it traversed across the cabin and turned and went out the top. A lot of feet of pipe, and the tiniest little, itty bitty fire, kept the cabin real warm until morning. Big cabin too, I think it was a 2 bedroom plus loft. We slept in the loft. Super warm up there, with the tiniest fire I've ever seen. It was a very small stove, so maybe it doesn't matter with the greater stove mass. Still, more heating = less chopping. Good luck. Hello Jake, I could not find email to send this. Just a thought, maybe it time to invest a snatch block system or as I know it as a block and tackle, for lifting heavy items....logs. I watched Ep 60 on your other channel with the ridge pole lifting. You need a lifting device with pulleys or 12v Winch or the manual winch off a boat trailer. You could attach a cable or rope on one side of opening area and then the other and have a running pulley with lift system attached. I know you like going to LOG Gym, but one day one will fall wrong, I do not need to explain, you know what I mean.
@0623kaboom
@0623kaboom 4 жыл бұрын
a snatch block is the pulley that can be placed onto the line anywhere ... and then secured ... a block and tackle assembly has to have the rope threaded through it ... combined they are all still block and tackle ... but you are right 4 snatch blocks and 2 or 3 double pulleys ... and rope and he could lift anything up as high as he has rope .... such as he could have built the yurt roof on the ground and then block and tackled the completed roof onto the yurt with 400m of rope and 6 or 8 pulley's to let him lift it alone ... yes that would give him somewhere between 6 and 10 to 1 mechanical advantage

The dude gets it done, but he could do things faster and much safer if he used his head and jerry-rigged up some tools and lifting aids. Or a simple thing like walking the pole ( spinning the pole easy-like, a half turn clockwise, another counter-clockwise) to the hole...see 12:25. Rent or buy some used scaffolding and hang a block and tackle. A little more time consuming and an added expense, but with a dwelling like that it will be needing repairs and maintenance regularly, making the scaffolding pay for itself in short order, and will keep you from attempting to do things that not even the Flying Wallendas would try.

please don’t take this the wrong way because i love your guys’ videos but i feel like the thumbnails that you guys pick are... obviously fishing for views? i love that ya’ll treat your bodies like temples and want to “advertise” that, for lack of a better word, but i think its kinda shitty that you’d make the decision to have nicole be in her underwear facing away from the camera for a video about building a loft - it’s just a consistent pattern that i’ve noticed since you’ve started posting your yurt series and it just seems... disconnected from your message. thank you for your time readin’ this, i know its not a necessary thing to say but i’ve been thinking about it for a while and thought i would say something instead of getting pissy and unsubscribing! i hope you find good health and happiness and abundance in your near future

It takes thousands of dollars to support 3 vehicles, 2 boats, 1 yurt, 2 woodstoves, ferry fees, gas, oil, chain saws, chains, tools, solar, gloves etc fencing, roofing, travel, food/vegan, cost of fruit/vegi, 2 dogs, 2 cats, clothes/boots for summer/winter. Did he buy or lease the land? Cost to repair the water well. Water tanks. Probably has electric hooked up. Cost of computers, cameras, phones, internet! What did I forget?? Viewers are supporting them. How long will it last??

Hermosa Calif I’m happy to celebrate their success as long as it’s genuine and they’re not blatantly ignoring the fact that the majority of their viewers are not here for their off grid life style and instead are staring at their physical forms. perhaps they should focus less on being “sexy” and moreso focus on their safety as many folks have been happy to point out :+)

Thank YOU! You guys are REAL! All of this adventure has given me so much inspiration, As a child aged 10, or 11 years or so, i used to go into the woods and hunt, fish, shoot, and forage myself with my best friend.. As for the "nail" contest? with Nicole with the nails in mouth? lol, you BOTH Won! :) you are both winners as i can see. I shouted out to the screen to throw down pallets when you found yourself short when dealing with the main outer canopy, (Perilous step ladder shortage). the one that is bendy, and heavy due to it being just that. Then you went and got pallets and did just the job that i was shouting out LMAO! I want to massively THANK You Both! for providing us all with your adventure into the "Unknown" and i commend you both hugely. I'm glad you both chose the 30 footer though :) I look forward to future vids from here on out :) Jake/Nicole? Massive respect. Many Regards, and Good luck! Next project? Dig Underground, basement, bugout? Tunnels? :P

@@humannatureismetal1263 Everything has accidents. A chainsaw can have an accident totally from no part of the user's activities. A chain can separate from poor quality, failure to assemble it, from bad machining, etc. However, if it came apart when he did not use it in the house, would that not be the same? An accident is something we can't determine is to happen. My legs were crushed it 1984 by a drunk driver hitting a car and ramming it into mine while I was out of mine. Nothing to do with the chainsaw, but it was an accident. We should be careful how we use them, but inside the house or out, they can or cannot have an accident.
