I can't get past the Rushdie "controversy" as easily as you . Cat Stevens sang "why can't we live and let live " I guess Yusef Islam did not quite agree with that . He called for the execution of Rushdie for religious principles. Yusef says he was misunderstood , yet he was quoted later of saying , ‘My only crime was, I suppose, in being honest. I stood up and expressed my belief and I am in no way apologizing for it.’ Now he is trying to distance himself from what his beliefs . Hypocrite if there ever was one ... I guess its live and let live , as long as you abide by the Sharia or Muslim beliefs -

I bet Cat/Yusuf gets tired of people asking him why he converted (from Christianity) and having to defend that most personal of decisions. If you read the story, at the time he made the decision he was drowning in the ocean (caught in a riptide, maybe?), all alone, and with not much chance of making it safely to shore. He made a promise to God that if he was spared he would make a change in his life. Sure enough, he was miraculously able to make it to shore (IIRC, a piece of driftwood floated within reach right at that moment, or some such?). So, he kept his word. 😄
