The World Championship Candidates' quarter-final line-up comprises Viswanathan Anand, Boris Gelfand, Vassily Ivanchuk, Anatoly Karpov, Viktor Korchnoi, Nigel Short, Jan Timman and Artur Yusupov. All matches are played in Brussels, where Anand comes close to defeating Karpov, but loses 3½-4½, Gelfand is beaten by Short 3-5, Ivanchuk loses out to Yusupov 4½-5½ after two tie-break games and Timman convincingly beats an out-of-form Korchnoi 4½-2½.
The Women's Candidates' Tournament requires a tie-break to separate joint winners Xie Jun and Alisa Marić. In a match that moves from Belgrade to Beijing, Xie Jun wins 4½-2½ and advances to face Maia Chiburdanidze for the Women's World Chess Championship in Manila. The Chinese challenger continues to impress and captures the world title by a score of 8½-6½.
Garry Kasparov wins a strong double-round Tilburg event with 10/14, one-and-a-half points clear of second placed Short.
Ivanchuk wins at the Linares tournament with 9½/13, ahead of Kasparov on 9/13.
Valery Salov and Short share victory at Amsterdam's 5th Euwe Memorial with 6/9, ahead of Karpov and Kasparov with 5½/9. All four players go through the tournament unbeaten.
In the first tournament of the second World Cup, Ivanchuk and Karpov are winners at Reykjavík with 10½/15. The World Cup is then abandoned, when Kasparov and Karpov are refused their requests for appearance fees and create an impasse. It is a sad conclusion to an exciting new series of events and heralds a decline in the fortunes of the Grandmasters Association (GMA). The World Cup branding is however resurrected much later.
Karpov finishes on top at the double-round, 33rd Reggio Emilia tournament, held at the 1990/91 year end. His winning score of 7½/12 narrowly eclipses Lev Polugaevsky in second place, with 7/12.
Gelfand is victorious at Belgrade with 7½/11, ahead of Gata Kamsky and John Nunn on 7/11.
A double-rounder at Biel is won by Alexei Shirov (9½/14), with Evgeny Bareev in second place on 8½/14.

The point of no return was when Vassily allowed the pawn push. That pawn on the 6th rank is the most important piece. It allows checkmate in multiple variations

The difference in position is Ivanchuk’s pieces became very discoordinated from piece grabbing in queenside while Yusupov’s pieces were mobilized perfectly in attack directly against white king

An amazing game, esp since it was only a 30 min. Rapidplay tiebreak. Two things: 1) the GMs watching in Brussels, incl Karpov, unanimously declared Yusupov's knight sac unsound. 2) However, after Nd5 Chucky had to grab Black's f-pawn, thus also weakening the e-pawn. Seirawan analyzed this & I believe demonstrated that this should win for White.

25 Nce7 should have been played rather than 25 Nde7, according to Seirawan, Christiansen, and Willy Watson. The three of them analyzed the position together, then afterward Yaz found the win at home.

When ivanchuk graps with the queen the black ruck by a8. After this he only have the next move to but his Knight from c6 to e7. So his queen has the hole white line connect with the bishop and in the same time the black ruck is under attack

It's definitely a game deserving of a title of sorts, as Ivantchuk's defense is almost as brilliant as Yussupov's attack. As impressive as the attacking ideas are, Ivantchuk keeps finding ways to throw spanners into the works. In other "immortal" games one very often finds that the player who becomes the victim of brilliant attacking play is a bit of a pushover who makes things too easy for the attacker. Just saying.

Chess blindness can afflict any player. Ivanchuk in hindsight shouldn't have pushed those Queen side pawns while his opponent's pawn sat on e3. To answer Agadmator's question. This game is an immortal.

I feel like Ba3 by Ivanchuk was his point of no return, he needed to play e4, or at the least e3 to keep that pawn from marching its way down the board and lodging itself deep in Ivanchuk's camp.

Sometimes a rookie mind is a good thing to have. A rookie would kill that pawn and sacrifice the knight, or move the knight and let him take another pawn. But NEVER allow a pawn to breath on kings neck. The worst thing to do.
