Not gonna lie, if I was actually his friend/possible lover I'd be genuinely upset that he's been trying to leave me behind and never told me. That he plans on leaving and intends for me to stay here. Knowing that he plans to leave and possibly never come back would absolutely crush me. I'd want him to take me with him. I could always return to the underworld when I wanted, but never even getting the choice to go with him, knowing he never intended for me to be with him, would be heartbreaking.
