Just one note: a Greek doctor wrote on a FB page earlier this month wondering why the world is amazed that Greece is doing so well: When we say Hello in Greece we say "Yiasou" and we say Goodbye we say "Yiasou". This means "In Good health" or "To your good health". Yia sou is derived from Hygheia = Health. Hygieia was the goddess/personification of health (Greek: ὑγίεια - hugieia), cleanliness and hygiene. A common saying one hears in Greece almost daily , and not just during this pandemic: "Υγεία το πολυτιμότερο αγαθό" = Health is the most valuable asset (physically, mentally and spiritually). Sending wishes for good health, on all levels, to the entire world. Yiasou from Greece!

It's a bunch of people that have been elected to do their job and they know how to. A decisive, inspiring, unifying and smart Prime Minister, with smart ministers that act fast. That's the first time i see such a thing in this country in my 28 years of life. Also, props to the Greek people that are loyal to following the measures that have been taken, and props to the government for correctly punishing the ones who do not. They are exactly the same useless like before. They do huge spending and have severely hostile treatment to anything Greek while illegals get free pass everywhere. I live in Crete with my husband and children and I can say first hand that Greece's response to the virus has been phenomenal. We have now been in lockdown for longer than any other country in Europe. Crete itself has not seen an increase in coronavirus cases for about 16 days now and there's only been 1 death in total on the island. The healthcare system has been on top of the crisis and every case is treated seriously. It's Easter weekend here right now and instead of lifting restrictions, the government has tightened them even more and increased the fines because what happens this weekend will directly affect when the lockdown ends. To add to all that, the government is helping our businesses stay closed by paying us and our employees to stay home. This is a country that has been treated like dirt by the rest on Europe and has been stepped on and stolen from. They have proven to be the bigger country and yes, the rest of the world should be looking to them for direction. I'm South African and I couldn't be prouder of my adopted country right now.

It was the most wonderful trip, and one of the best times of my life. It instantly felt like home. People were smiling everywhere, and they were so nice, calm and helpful! We could always ask somebody when we were a bit lost, even hitch-hiked sometimes, and had great experiences. What you wrote only warms my heart more. Next week, I would actually be returning to Crete finally, if it wasn't for the virus. The hotel's manager gave us an 18-month voucher - although we've booked non-refundable accommodation. I think the wonderful people of that country are the secret :).
@ZuvioxArts4 жыл бұрын
The key thing here is that people seem to be judging countries by their handling of the situation. In 5 years time, the countries that “contained” the virus may suffer drastic economic loss that will put them in a recession for almost a decade after. Those countries that “let their people die” may lost a percentage of the population, but may be economically thriving and may be a world leader after this. Depending on what people moral values are depends on what the best solution is. No country has it right, they’ve just done what the majority of their citizens are happy with. Greece j admire for the lockdown policy. But in 5 years time when they’re even worse off economically; do you think people will be saying the same thing?

- Yuval: “if I had to choose right now, between the United States and Greece on who is going to lead the world through this epidemic, I would definitely choose Greece.” - James:”...that’s so depressing....” Question: I understand this statement is, maybe, surprising or unexpected. Needs analysis to be understood (why Greece for example?). Someone needs to know how Greece has managed the crisis, even be living in Greece or know Greek culture to understand fully, why Greece (as a collective society/mentality and as a healthcare system) has succeeded in protecting human life so well; which also explains why Greece has some of the best physicians in the world. But “depressing” ....? The fact that the USA is unfit to lead and a small country is brought as an example of better leadership is “depressing”?? No James. It’s not depressing that the US of A has let the world down. What’s depressing is that we always expect America to lead and if they can’t or won’t, we find “depressing” the prospect of someone else, although small but acting as a good example for very good reasons, doing so.
@empireoflightz4 жыл бұрын
I'm with you 100%, would love for other smaller countries to unite and lead us out of this crisis. Dear Yuval Noah Harari, Thank you for making me proud to be Greek. In fact, it's not new. We have done it in the past and we continue to do what we Greeks know how to do well. To protect the world and lead our world. This is not selfish, but as a historian you know this better than we do.

All goverments had to ask themselves a simple question: the people or the economy? Greece chose the people and were accused by European countries of spreading panic. On the contrary, countries like the US and the UK have not taken early measures because, until the last moment when they were made to take actin by public opinion, they were trying to save the economy. In the post covid world, countries will have to ask themselves that question again. Greece is trying to persuade the EU to go with european coronabonds to help countries like Italy, while people-can-go-to-hell Germany could not care less. So yeah...Greece all the way. As for the bracelets, let's not mix what people are willing to do to prevent a crisis and what people are willing to do when things are normal. We might have agreed to taking permission for going out, that does not mean we are willing to take permission forever. People around the world would react if told to wear a bracelet or anything of the sort. Absolutely not.

Octavio M. V. Oneto No dear! Criticizing politicians is not an “easy” thing to do. It’s essential! One of the basic elements of Democracy. An elected politician you can criticize for wrongdoings without facing persecution. An elected politician who has to answer for his actions.

Geenagr I think in regards to the USA, you are wrong. We easily give up our rights for greed and convenience. To get an app, we will give up all kinds of personal info. Businesses in the US force us to pay by debit card instead of paper money, for examples gym memberships or self storage businesses. People are voluntarily putting in chips under their skin so they don't have to use a key to unlock doors to house or cars. Edit: not in US but in another country. Unfortunately we will be forced or gladly give up are rights and freedom.

This format can be a legendary format, that changes the world history, James Corden! The intellectuals, getting out of academics, serious tv shows, intellectual and exclusive institutions, (they can still be active there as well) and coming to public level, for nonexclusive, comprehensive platforms, sharing their wisdom in an understandable way, for the public and daily people. This would make the intellectual (in general) to understand the public, and learn ways to communicate in a more inclusive manner, and the audience will learn to increase their level of understanding about the world, without feeling stupid or rejected. Easy daily questions, down to the level of the easiest minds, should be addressed to intellectuals for a better world! Please continue!

I believe James is not saying anything bad about Greece, he is speaking of the state of the United States. Many “richer” countries have not taken Covid19 as a threat early on. My opinion is they felt safe by their health care system. What I assume is that they did not look at the ramifications of thousands of people dying, thousands being hospitalized what that would do to their health care system. I am currently living in Greece, we have a good government that saw that the financial crisis that we had has weakened our health care system. They know the limitations of the hospitals. I believe they care more about the people than the money we will lose. They locked us up fairly early on. It has been a struggle to be for sure, but it would cost us more if this decisive decision did not happen. We have been through a trial by fire for 12 years, we will get through this trial again. We have some great scientists and doctors and they do not have the arrogance not to see our limitations as a country. They work with what we have as a nation and try to make the best decision for all. I

Dear James, up until the day I saw your interview with Yuval Noah Harari, I was a big fan of yours. I enjoyed what you were doing, trying to make our lives happier, matching your talent and good vibes, with those of other bigger stars. I was hugely disappointed with the highly unfortunate choice of words, re Greece compared to the USA, not just because I am a proud, humble Greek, that is grateful for our current government, especially after being heavily beaten by 10 years of economic crisis, but because, under such dire times, I would expect from a public figure like yourself, more humbleness, rather than confirming that you are still living in a bubble created by Hollywood stardom and fame. Indeed, small, unpopular, hard beaten nations, can shine at times, and can lead the way, and there is no shame in doing so. People around the world, especially, wealthy, and famous individuals like yourself, should feel less untouchable, as this pandemic health, financially, socially, psychologically, wise, affects us all, and there are no distinctions made. So, a public apology is expected, as good examples, rays of hope, is all we need, and we should be building on that, especially influencers like yourself. For a better world, with less prejudice, and discrimination. Mari

I would love to hear more from people like him. I bought his book and I couldn't put it down. His predictions can some times be scary but then you say to yourself, "wake up this is happening right now." Will you please get more experts like this. People who think deeper and are able to see a world that we are not able to, whether it's good or bad because I think we all deserve the truth and not fairy tales. We can get takeaways that are not pushed by the government. Then you might be able to think a different way: "Damn this is the way it is, I'm not able to change it, so here is what I'm going to do to keep myself well and get through it" . I know all the other stuff about distancing and cleaning non-stop. But will we be able to give one another a hug anytime soon? Will we be able to go somewhere that has sun.? Thank you for all your shows. Ti-Dublin

I'm a citizen of Greece and I feel that I must say two words about all of this. This Greek "success", even if is too early, nothing is over yet, anyway, this great response of my country was a result of some major and important things: 1. My country was suffering a 10year bankruptcy and depression, so we were ready and in a "emergency status" already 2. Government acted quickly and responsibly, listening to the SCIENTISTS, and 3. People obeyed. We stayed TF home, listened to the specialists and stopped fricking believing in superstitious stupidities You all welcome to Greece. Dr. Harari, my respects ✌️

The reason the nation of Greece is practically getting out of this unscathed is because the governing political body decided to listen to the experts in that country. The Greeks, when hit with adversity, have always performed well. A recent example besides their handing of the pandemic was Turkey's failed attempt to blackmail Europe by transferring illegal immigrants and desperate people to the Greek border. Greece was phenomenally successful in protecting its border and at the same time dealing with constant turkish provocations. I just don't get what is happening in Italy, Spain, UK and a few others. As for the USA, I live here and I follow the news. The US is plagued by a President who is filled with hubris.
