Smoking pipes is getting rare. 30 years ago, lots of people did it, i remember my grandfather with a pipe. Nowadays, its really rare with only a few old people still smoking pipe. Im not a fan of smoking at all, but a pipe has a lot more style than anything else. Your pipe is so nice that i can imagine how proud the owner would show it of. Very nice job. It reminds me a bit of the clay pipes that historically were produced in the town i was born, Gouda. Long stemmed clay pipes. I always liked that design.

I am planning a follow up to this video where I will show a similar pipe yet made with different methods for the turning, boring, stem shape and connection type, might even use a different wood, but don't count on it :) I promise that I will do some talking in the follow up, unlike in this video :) Yuval.

Which woods are best for the bowl?

Well, the best of the best would be Briar root, which is imported from Italy. Alternative woods are Olive, Cherry, Mulberry, Walnut (which is kind of controversial, since some species are poisonous), Apple, Oak and more.

Well, there are many alternative woods for pipes, while the "best" wood for the job is Briar root (which is expensive since it's rare and comes mostly from the south of Italy, a small single piece could run you up 20-100 dollars), while alternative woods are many, among them are Cherry, Olive and Walnut. Between you and me, the Olive looks the best, but the Walnut taste the best when you smoke it (and the first couple of smokes will always have wood taste, until the inside of the bowl is well charred, while professional pipes come pre charred).

I had a plank of Oak, about 5 cm tall (2 inches) and 20 cm wide (some more inches) and I cut a piece of it 30 cm long (about 12 inches) and I started slicing it in 2 mm wide slices on my table saw using my sled, risking my life and fingers in the process... if I had a bandsaw it would have been much simpler. If you can get a thin (but not too thin) veneer slices, use those, why not!

Cool project, Yuval. I never even thought about making a pipe... A tip, which you are of course free to disregard :-) Use a wooden handscrew clamp (two wood jaws, two screws in opposite directions running through threaded pivots in the jaws; the jaws can be tightened non-parallel) to hold stuff on the drill press and bandsaw. I've accumulated a bunch over the years, and modified them by drilling holes through the centerline so that each jaw has a half-circle cutout or by making "V" notches in the jaws at right angles to or along the length. I can firmly clamp about anything with them. Clyde

Thankyou Nolan! I used simple wood glue, it's not toxic (but mind you I don't use it on the edge, that will be held by pressure inside the bowl of the pipe. The space is about 2 mm wide and 1 mm tall. Yuval

Yuval, I'm a pipe smoker. That is a very nice looking pipe. I'm just wondering about the mechanics of how the air hole and tobacco chamber meet up. In a briar pipe or ones made from olive wood, usually the air hole meets the bottom of the tobacco chamber. The way you have it, moisture will collect in the chamber below the tobacco chamber. I hope this makes sense. That's the way it looks to me. The only way to know is to fire it up and smoke it. Again, nice work.

In fact, most of the pipes I make have a side hole, and looking at some of the comments here and on facebook I might as well make a follow up video showing the side hole type of bowl. This is the first time I'm trying that type of configuration, and I can tell with ease, it works just fine, but it might be it will need a cleaning more often... only time will tell, but this type of chambers meet up is not unconventional, especially in native american peace pipes. When the stem heats up and the glue vapours from the heat. Perhaps a more old fashioned layer of horse hide glue. Or tie stainless steel wires to a trees branches. The result, custom non split pipe stems. My grandfather used to make and carve his own pipes.

I mostly use Walnut and Olive, since it's two woods I have which are good for pipes, you can also use Oak, Cherry and Apple, and there are quite a few others which are good substitutes to the very expansive Briar root. Mineral oil is my choice of finish because it's non toxic and food safe, but you can use different types of waxes and dyes on a pipe as well. If I had a good buffing system I would have sanded the wood to a high grit, apply shellac sanding sealer, let it cure and buff it to a shine, but I don't have a buffing system nor do I have Shellac, so you know, use what you can :) Yuval.

I like the design for the bowl having a lower chamber. how does it smoke though? have you tested diff diameters to see if the draw changes?

I have to say I haven't tested different bore size fo the pipes, I use a standard 20 mm paddle drill bit these day, then change it if I feel it's too large, or for smaller pipes, if a little different and I normally do it by eye, to be sure the wall thickness is enough to let the inside get a good char layer, and be wide enough to allow good thermal insulation on the outside... and it's smokes pretty good, or well enough to be called a useable pipe. Lets be honest, people would normally smoke pot in these, and they aren't really concern about these miner issues... Yuval

Awesome Video! I woud like to know if the is another method to shape a long hollow piece of wood, for instance if the used piece is not that flexible.

Thank you! There are a few more methods for making the stem, like a hollow branch and then steam bend it to shape, but I don't know which plants have those hollow branches, I bet a google search will help you find anything local that might fit the job. I also know of people who hand carve their stems in two halves and glue them together after they carved out the track in the stem... Yuval.

Thank you Mike! Each layer (out of three) is about 2 mm wide. It's not super accurate as I don't have the tools to make it 100% accurate, but it's wood, so you can work it your way if you really want to. Yuval

Thank you Glen! Some people do it without the wire in the glue up and then try to push the wire in to clean up the glue, which sometimes is impossible, this way, you know your hole will be clean all the way through. Don't ask don't tell ;) Yuval.

That's a good idea with laminating the stem. It looked like one piece after sanding.

Thank you Phil! It works really well, especially if you keep the grain alignment, and also have a tight glue up. I like to sand the stem after I oil it so the oil and dust mix and fill in the pores and any small spaces between the laminate layers. Yuval.

I would say smoking harms the smoker. I would also say I ate so much of that glue as a child it might explain some of my faults today... :) it cures and burns off if it's too close to the heat source, but I am working on making some new pipes with a different method of fixing the end without glue, just to quite down those who see it as an issue. I don't smoke a pipe myself, I'm more of a roller of tobacco and other herbal remedies. Yuval

In the video when you drilled the small hole down the center, it went through the bottom, but when you show the assembly, the bottom looks to be in tact. Should the hole go through ? Thank you Casey! Well, to answer your question, the hole I drilled in the center made it through only to the space I drilled before from the side for the stem to enter to, so it broke the divide between the bowl of the pipe and the stem channel, and not pushed through all the way to the bottom of the pipe.
