TheFlowMind I think he got in enough rotations to get necessary points. And despite all that he got silver. A serious head injury moments before competition and he still got silver ahead of all the other uninjured (except Yan Han who was also injured) skaters. If that isn't managing it then I don't know what is.
@TheFlowMind6 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar why the scoring point of skating. In gymnastics, a fall is minus 1.00 point and since most gymnasts score between 14.00 to 16.00. A fall is pretty much the end of a competition unless the athlets is a top one and the competition is an all around.
@adlaaq6 жыл бұрын
He received minus 1.00 point for each fall, you can see the deductions in the score :) but this is different from gymnastics. Even if you fall, if you jumped and got the correct number of rotations you'll be given the base value points for the jumps, and the deductions as penalty. Each jump has a certain base value. There's also the GOE (Grade of Execution), which can be positive (meaning the base value + bonus points for the jumps) or negative (meaning base value minus the negative grade), which, for jumps, usually goes from 0 to 3 points, positive or negative. If you make a bad landing, you'll probably receive a negative GOE, and if you fall, there's the negative GOE plus the 1.00 point deduction, BUT, as I already said, you'll still gain points for completing the rotations of the jump. Also, Yuzuru is known for having difficult entries for his jumps - this also counts for his scores. Also the jumps are worth more in the second half of the program, and he landed well his two combinations (the ones with two jumps) in the second half (a combination jump has a bigger base value, specially if it's done in the second half, and he landed two combinations). The program also consists of other technical elements, like spins and steps, and these ones he did not make a mistake, the jumps aren't everything in a well constructed program. And this is only the technical score, there's also the component score, which scores the skater's skating skills, the transitions between elements, performance, composition of the coreography and etc. The technical and the component score together make the skater's score for the program. Another thing is: in figure skating, the skaters perform twice: the short program and the free skate (or long program or free program, call it the way you want haha). The overall score consists of the scores in the short program and the long program together, and this is the score that matters for the podium. Yuzuru got a good score in the short program, and it helped his overall score. Well, this became bigger than what i expected haha I hope this wasn't too confusing, but the scoring system in figure skating is weird and kinda hard to explain and understand.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I don't think he should've performed after that terrible crash with the Chinese skater. He could've injured himself even more seriously during the FS. You never know what could happen performing with a head injury. Yes, it is heart-wrenchingly beautiful to see human endurance, grit and determination but if he couldn't bring himself to let it go, his country's officials and coach should have forced him to pull out. His life is more important than any medal. Before he is a star athlete & commodity, he is a human being.
@aosanshou7 жыл бұрын
themissingmile : Yep. His coach told him he does not need to be a hero but he wanted to give it a try. This kind of unforgivable incidents happen often than we wish, from the poor conditions athletes are in, from lack of space=money etc.and he didn’t like to make big thing out of it (like, this becoming political issue or Chinese and Japanese hating each other etc.etc.). But he did make clear speech how these conditions should be changed, that he could have been seriously hurt or “be gone(dead)” so please think about it, but I guess people don’t do anything as they’re not in danger themselves. I think he is someone who feels strongly about representing his country, his homeland (* damaged by 3/11 2011 Tsunami), loves skating, be always grateful about his environment being able to compete, and [hate to lose] which is also important element of good athlete.Anyway, there’s joy in showing what one have gained ( technics, conditions) through real dense intense days of training, so I assume he athlete is the one who wanted to give it a try here.
@themissingmile7 жыл бұрын
aosanshou I think I understand what you are saying. I had imagined all of those possible reasons myself yet none of those reasons could take precedence over his being alive. There was a greater than 50/50 chance that he could’ve hurt his head fatally during any one of his multiple falls. I love so many things about Japan but this is the one thing - mindset that I can’t agree with. A Life lost to overwork (in this case, defending a championship) is such a terrible terrible tragic waste.

aosanshou Having just watched Hanyu’s 2018 Olympics SP performance, he looks so mentally strong and focused. I have to concede that if he didn’t perform injured at the 2014 COC, he might not have built up that sort of mental strength to power through the Olympics today. I suppose those were the types of major obstacles he had to overcome to get to where he is. He values skating above all else and while I still don’t agree with him performing injured, I respect and understand his need to do so. He will win Olympic gold!

🤝 I still crying, Beijing hits me like Cup of China 2014 back then, different tears, different pain, but same bravery and strong will of Yuzuru. I so inspired

I heard about the crash but never watched the performance until today, much less knew that he fell 5 times. Watching him get up again and again hurts but is so inspiring, and his reaction after getting his score was really something. I can't believe he did all that in a state where afterwards he couldn't even walk without support
I never fall in love this hard with a guy in my entire life and he doesn't even know my very existence.

Damn I still cry overtime i watch this - especially at the end! You could tell he was in serious pain during the performance - beyond just the falls, he was much slower in general. His spins also looked gruelling! After each fall it looked harder and harder for him to get up, it's amazing he was even able to attempt half the jumps he did! What a professional, he even landed some, in that condition! So proud of him, and so happy he won gold twice at the olympics, YUZURU DESERVES the title of TWO TIME OLYMPIC CHAMPION! I hope he stays healthy for a loong time!

I find it incredible that he fought through not only injured but by that time all the adrenaline in his would have worn off by then and you just feel extremely drained at that point
This video was 5 year ago and KZbin just recommend me today. I don't even watch skate sport before but his performance really touching eventho it's not perfect.

hi there yeah this performance happened after he crashed into another skater in a warm up. it made a lot of his fans worried. it’s good that he’s in good condition now and is motivated to go against the usa’s figure skater (nathan chen)
@nanwijanarko19694 жыл бұрын
5 months late, but someone crashed into him mid-jump during warm ups. The collision on the torso knocked his breath out and injured his leg muscles (forgot which). As he was mid-jump, he fell and knocked his head on the ice. He must have grazed his chin too as he fell. In one interview he said he could hardly breath on ice as he lied there or sth like that, maybe his atshma added to that too? One worrying accident, really. Some say it was deliberate. We may never know.
@al.m7653 жыл бұрын
@@nanwijanarko1969 It was absolutely not deliberate, no skater would ever risk the danger of intentionally crashing into someone. Both of them were lucky to not face season-ending (or even career ending) injuries

Everytime I feel like giving up, I always come back to this performance. Although he may not of won, he was still there and competed until the end. I truly admire his determination, he is a great person.
No matter how much he's been beaten down, he doesn't give up. Yuzuru means strength and even if he's viewed as a graceful and gentle athlete, hes the strongest I know. And that perseverance pays off when he's still in first place even after the pain, the down falls and whatever had brought him down. It's so sad to watch but at the same time so beautiful. I look up to him for, at such a young age, his attitude and sportsmanship is much too good.

God I can't imagine how much pain he was in. The falls were from his ankles literally buckling when he landed. He had such a beautiful routine and I'm glad he won silver at least.

awww... that poor thing.. bleeding and limping.. he must have pushed himself to the limit. But so professional, he kept himself safe, that's the most important part. aww..

You can tell that it was getting harder and harder for him to get up after each fall but he still did it
Look at the woman in the audience at 5:40. After his second consecutive fall she cried for Yuzuru, knowing that wasn't the performance that he wanted to give. Later, you can hear someone shouting 'arigato' at Yuzuru for still skating despite his injury (8:13). His fans knew how much skating means to him and how much their support keeps him going. Their tears and his hard work paved the road to his second Olympic gold medal.
Damn! I know this happened long ago. But seeing him in this state and still performing even though he was injured, he's so strong!! My heart aches and I feel like crying every time I see him fall. I wish I was there and at least do something to help.

Holy crap, what a guy! And I love how supportive everyone was of him, realizing just how much he was fighting to persevere. Even the commentators were throwing out words of encouragement throughout his performance. They aren't exaggerating when saying how strong of a person he is. Not to mention he won 2nd despite being injured! Honestly, he's such an inspiration.

I watched this again today. I couldn't take it. I just started crying and sobbed. He's such a fighter. Even in that condition, he didn't forget his gloves and didn't leave his band aid in the rink. I've had a difficult week this week. At times, I thought I couldn't go on. When I see this, it gives me belief that I can fight on too. PS: Brian Orser was packing all the Poohs at the end..
Yuzuru is so amazing, he should have been feeling so much pain at that moment, but he still made it to the end of your presentation! he is not only the pride of Japan but also of the whole world! I really hope that one day I can meet this legend in person.❣️
Idk why youtube recommended me this, I dont even know who this boy is but damn... 5:40 and 6:56 made me cry so bad. The way he still trying even after the shock, and all those injuries and falls. The moment i saw his eyes when he finished the performance my heart ached. he is the strongest, you did it amazing sweetie👌😭. I love you and now I feel like I want to protect you like my own child😭

Leave it to him to make the falls feel like part of the program. There are many great skaters, but few who can evoke the kind of emotion he does. Such a legend.
