He could hardly speak English until high school. And he said he wasn't good at speaking English. But he made an effort. Few top Japanese athletes can speak English. But he worked hard and got a communication tool. So, while Japanese players are getting together and talking in Japanese at the figure exhibition, he is the only one who feels free to communicate with players from many countries. That leads to why he is loved.

To Westerners, please keep it mind if you were planning to visit Japan. This video is considered ruder than you think. In Japan, how well you speak English is very sensitive. When I was in America, a guy said he was terribly sorry about he had thought I was Chinese...I felt strange because I didn’t care. Later, I was shocked because that guy suddenly said that my life there must be hard because my English wasn’t good 😨 Later, I was astonished because he asked me to go out 😳 You don’t say to a girl who you want to date that she is ugly, do you? You shouldn’t say to a Japanese person who you want to be close that his/her English isn’t good. Only examinar is qualified to say so. I consider it ruder than they thought I was Chinese. It’s completely different from how good your Japanese is because all of us learn English at school. It’s also different from how good English of people from other countries is. In many other countries, affluent people can speak English at native level but common people can’t. They live in different societies. Japanese people are educated equally and some can speak English and others can’t. They live in a same society. We usually relate to how smart they are. One of our bad point is hard work. We usually have to obey people enter that company earlier than you. After I came back to Japan, I was told I had better hide that I can speak a little English or say I had stayed in America much longer than I really did by my colleague. The reason was...not to make a worker who had stayed there much longer than I did but her English was worse feel bad. Though I think it’s ridiculous that we sometimes had better pretend not to be able to speak English not to make others feel bad, I don’t think it’s ridiculous that we should not dis people’s bad English.

What a horribly counter-productive standpoint. So, in order to not make someone who was lazy to study feel bad, you, who was not lazy to study, should lie about your skills and feel bad. 😳 I respect Japanese culture a lot, but I don't care if they say it's rude to point out when their behavior is objectively bad and counter-productive. Same applies to their perspective on women, marriage, and ageism, because the general evolution of the society is more important than their objectively bad conservative views.

Finally. The voice of reason. I totally agree. He's a rockstar. A JAPANESE FIGURE SKATING GOD. People should respect that and speak to him in his own language. The English speaking people are so disgustingly arrogant thinking everyone needs to speak English. What a ridiculous notion. And this channel using him to get views by taking advantage of what it considers a "flaw" is shameful. The JSF failed Yuzu from the beginning. When he became their number one asset he should have been provided with a designated interpreter for all his interaction with non-Japanese speaking situations. One who knew him well and would ACCURATELY translate his words. It's not a "flaw" for him to not like English. As driven, as focused and as intelligent as he is, I have no doubt that had he wanted to master English, he would be speaking it perfectly by now.
Thanks for the explanation for "I bet my life to skate every time"..wasnt sure what he meant.

Honestly, who cares so much about speaking "perfect " English? When you communicate with people with different accents, you know that you have got another culture to learn which is so much fun. It is also the communicator's responsibility to try to get used to a new accent if you are interested in what the other is saying. I think our adorable and charismatic Yuzuru speaks good English in some of the clips. And a lot of us would trade off our overrated language skills for any qualities Yuzuru has.

There is no L in Japanese pronounciation but in stead of that they use R. In spite of the fact that they use a lot of English words, they somehow addapt them to their pronunciation, so that for instance LION becomes RION. The structure of Japanese is totally different from that of English, so it is difficult for a Japanese to master English in the same way as it is difficult for an European to master spoken Japanese not to mention in writing (Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana). Neither I am a native speaker of English but I have been exposed to foreign languages since my childhood ( mainly to German and English, which in the end I have studied and graduated from University ). The English speaking nations are in a way lucky because for them is natural that all the other should speak English, so just a few of them, first of all the language freaks put some effort for learning any foreign language. The easiest way is to criticize those who are not that fortunate but to make themselves understood must master English.
