Yuzuru Hanyu & Johnny Weir - Otoñal Comparison

Comparison between Johnny Weir's free skating performance at the NHK Trophy in 2004 and Yuzuru Hanyu's short program tribute at Skate Canada in 2019. In August 2018, Hanyu announced that for the upcoming season his short program would be set to "Otoñal" by Raúl di Blasio and choreographed by Jeffrey Buttle.
On choosing music used previously by his skating idol, Hanyu remarked "I am satisfied that as a result (of my Olympic success) I have been released from the pressure that I have to produce results. I think, and feel, that I can skate for myself from now on. I want to go back to my skating origins".

@@springday3842 Certainly has developed from 2004 (Johnny) to 2019 (Yuzuru). In 15 years the level of a program has increased a lot. They keep pushing their limits for obtain higher scores because of this new scoring system. Figure skating is a very interesting sport still is not so popular as other sports and that's because nowadays it's more about jumps with many rotations and less about artistry. We'll live to see how this sport will evolve further and we'll continue to enjoy it. God bless you !

Yuzuru has much more complex and packed program with transitions in between each elements, seamlessly connecting each other. That twizzle to 3A and exit with twizzle?? That's one of the best in the field. His step sequence? His spins? To die for

The thing for me is when watching them side by side, you really get to see just how dynamic Yuzuru's performances are. JW is lovely but his style is very upright. Whereas Yuzu's had so much more variations not just in transitional styles but also his body position. He bends his knees more which gives him a high to low and back to high visual effect and adds dimension to almost every move. And he is just naturally elegant in a way that can't be taught, some of it is natural talent and some of it is his dna (eg body build and body lines which adds to the elegance of his moves). Really enjoyed the side by side.

Wow, I really enjoyed both performances. Johnny more than a decade performance but never fade away its elegance and artistry. And Yuzu, well we all know why he’s the best of his generation. hard to compare due to all the parts of skating that are different these days to back then. You can see where Yuzu got some of his elegance to add to his style, Johnny was elegant. It is hard for me since discovering Yuzu to truly enjoy anyone else, it just is what it is. The way he skates has no comparison in style to anyone. Plus he is beautiful

All the comparisons between Yuzu and the other skaters of another era just show, how much men figure skating has changed in this 15 - 20 years, there are worlds between. It also shows very clearly, how outstanding and genius Yuzu is in his programs. Maybe in another 20 years there will be quintuple jumps common and we will look with a slight smile to this time now. Besides this my respect for all the skaters of today and their performances raises enormous, what an achievement. Every legend has its time, Yuzu's is now - hopefully we can see a lot more of his magic in future.

comparing artists, athlets from different times is always so difficult. See, I'am pretty old and I remember the fights of Muhammed Ali. Against Fraser, Foreman. My Dad. my older sister and me stood up in the middle of the night to see those fights. And sometimes we ended up in tears. I have never watched another boxing fight. Ali was not really to beat. He is and will be forever the Greatest. And that special magic Ali has have (RIP champ), Yuzuru has it too and Johnny Weir not. Of course Yuzuru is doing that routine better. But there is much more. He is a very complete skater, I love the way he is interpreting mucic; he is touching my heart. And he seemed to be a very thinking person and a person, who is very helpful, generous. Simply very much worth to be loved.

Figure skating as a whole sport has been dying out, so no other skater will come close to Plush, and no where near Yuzu's popularity. Yuzu and his fans were keeping the sport alive for the past years but now that he has retired from competitions, it's so obvious the popularity of the sport is low. Even before Yuzu debuted as a senior, competitions were filled with fans, now they can barely fill half.

Yuzuru's performance is more complicated and more artistic, but although we can't really compare because his' is the short program and Johnny weir's program is the free skate. And skaters usually tends to include less step sequence to make it look artistic at the beginning to save up their energy meanwhile the short program let's you explore the artistry with more step sequences and are able to spend more energy because the program is shorter. So I'm just saying that it would be a fairer comparison if Johnny weir also did a short program or vice versa

Произвольные программы Yuzuru - кардинально не сравнимы с оными у Джонни, хотя бы потому, что фигурное время не стояло на месте : "другие времена - другие нравы", перефоазируя слова одного известного классика русской литературы. Стиль катания Джонни - соответствовал именно тому времени, в плане построения соревновательных программ. Сейчас это выглядит архаично и даже порой и скучновато. Но то, что Джонни имел собственную, не совсем обычную для того времени, - манеру катания - это бесспорно.

Not offend to Mr.Johnny Weir, he might good in his era, and because of the changing era, Yuzuru also has much more style tehnical, but for me Yuzuru always stand ahead from others, not because he is beautiful but he has something that nobody has, that is hypnotic and magic aura around him that i cant take my eyes from him. I have always enjoyed watching Johnny Weir, from the beginning he was something different. In this comparison you can see Weir's influence in Yuzuru's program but then Yuzuru took it further. This video is not so much about the changes in the score and how if affected the skate overall - the jumps and quads, are just details (Yuzu has being using Otonal way before the ISU's score changes). This video Is about the comparing different technics musicality and artistic level between the two programs. Is about how their ability to convey what the music is saying. Since the beginning, artistry has always being a very important side of skating, and with the timeis something that is being forget. And here we can see both types of ice skating: the sportive one - wich focus on the jumps and it's technicalities and less on the musicality, expression - and the artistic - wich focus more on the musicality, expression, performance, while applying with perfection the jumps and quads as a part of the his choreography not just random jumps that doesn't fit in the overall performance. And this performance this particular performance of Otonal by Yuzuru, was a was of him trdting the new score. To know how his old programs would be scored

In terms of step sequence, matching the song and speed, I really liked Yuzuru Hanyus one. The vibe from Johnny was very cool. I liked the choreo for Yuzurus more but something about johnnys performance gave it a flair that’s hard to match.

They are both my favorite skaters. And I only enjoy watching their skating and no one else! They are both the epitome of figure skating. Perfectly representing the figure skating sport where technically and artistry goes hand in hand. Too bad, nowadays, it's even less worth watching since it has become a silly jump skating show. There goes the grace and artistry of figure skating. I miss Johhny and Hanyu's presence in the competition.
