I love London, moving here for University was one of the best decisions I ever made. As far as crime goes, the majority of people in my area are just normal people going about their lives. As long as you have a basic understanding of when and where to go out and what to be wary of, it becomes much easier to enjoy London and be able to see it as the amazing place that it is. Towns and smaller, rural areas outside London can feel much safer, but not all of them are so quaint and charming. When I went back home to Crewe for Christmas, it reminded me how unhealthy it was for my motivation and mindset to stay there. It's an area with such little life, and has been neglected for years by the council. I feel so much happier being in London. The atmosphere is always active, and I'm able to feel positive about going outside and seeing what's around. For anyone reading this who is thinking about moving to or even just visiting London, I can only give encouragement.

I used to think the black bogies was from diesel exhaust but I found out I was getting it more from the Tube - especially the Northern Line. If you look from one end of a station to another then you will notice a black haze at the other end. The haze is caused by a mixture of dust floating but largely by the wearing of the brake pads shooting our brake pad dust which is made of burnt metallic materials once airborne.

Bins are collected twice a week in Islington, but if you leave stuff out on the street other days street cleaners sometimes remove it anyway, specially on busy roads, to prevent a hazard. Check with your neighbours/landlord, it isn’t usually every day and you can get fined for putting stuff out when you shouldn’t.

Or check with the local council website, of course, which is paid for with your council tax.

@A smoking ChickenFish There are plenty of English people in London. The tories have made it into a virtual tax haven, so it's got a huge international population. The last time I live in London (a few years ago now) was in a very nice apartment in a modern complex around a dock (basin of water) in Docklands not very far from the Tower of London. All of the apartments had at least parking spaces, a few had garages - my apartment was one of those; I wouldn't then or now have felt very comfortable having to leave my car outside, but I understand that many 10s of thousands of people have no option. So I never experienced vandalism on my car there, luckily. However I also lived in Paris for a number of years in a very upmarket area (not far from the Arc de Triomphe) with an underground (lockable) parking garage below our small apartment block - and of course I had it broken into; after my first car break-in when parked in the multi-storey parking of the nearby supermarket I used frequently, I took the advice of local French staff in our office and had the stolen radio/CD player replaced by a removable model, for which very 'natty'/small bags were available for when you parked the car outside a restaurant and removed your radio/CD player from the car, so when my parking garage was broken into in Paris the damage was a smashed window, but no radio/CD stolen as I had removed it to the apartment when I came home the night before (luckily the thief fled & did not do any more malicious damage) - oh, also in Paris, I was once mugged with pepper spray when driving into the underground parking garage of my apartment building in Paris, after opening the outer door with my remote control; yes, this really was the equivalent of Knightsbridge or the more upmarket parts of Kensington in London. London has its problems like any big city, of course, but it is nowhere near as bad as some other major cities I have lived around the world in Europe or Asia. Glad you're still enjoying your life in London :)

I'm a country bumpkin and i commute into London for work, i can't understand how anyone can live there. As you mentioned it takes just as long to get anywhere in the city as if you were out of the city. Pricing is stupid in general for the UK but london takes it to another level, i couldn't afford a studio room in London for the cost of my 1 bed flat in the country Biggest advise i'd give someone who is working in London is look for somewhere outside of london to live, it'll take you just as long to get to work and you won't have to sell your left arm to get something called 'space'

Some people prefer urban living, with all the wonderful bars, pubs, restaurants, galleries, museums, clubs etc in easy walking distance or on a regular tube/bus journey away. It can be an amazing lifestyle living in the city. Others prefer country living with the open spaces, trees, country lanes and country pubs. I can understand both attractions. Then again, an alternative is another UK city like Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds or Glasgow which are all pretty nice, have many of the same urban benefits of London but cost a lot less (though granted London's galleries and museums are pretty much on a different level)

You're only just scratching the surface with this topic! Lived in North London for 19 years, moving from a northern town. London might as well be a different country. The culture is so very different and the city changes you as a person. It is really important for tourists to experience a more representative UK and travel outside the M25 motorway ("highway"). Nightly rubbish pick up happens in most areas if you live above a shop or office because you're not usually given a wheelie bin for general rubbish and one for recycling. We usually have to get green bags from the council to put all your recycling.

I think the reason air pollution is so high on the tube, is because the brake dust from the trains brakes has no where to go, hence it leaves its mark.

If you live in a high street (especially in an affluent area) then there’s usually a small refuse truck/van that will pick up refuse left out and empty street bins. Although it’s not guaranteed in most areas of London or the U.K. but it’s a frequent occurrence in affluent parts of the city (which is another reason the council charge is higher).
@kendee44215 жыл бұрын
Daily bin collections are because there are shops and restaurants nearby. That is why your Council Tax is high. It is cheaper to buy a house just outside London than to rent in London, because mortgage payments are less than rent, if you can get one!

Crime is a feature of London; we live fifty minutes south of London; for many years we didn't bother to lock the house, even now it is not an issue. The best way to enjoy London is to have an apartment there and a house in the country. Of course that isn't feasible for most of us, so we are very content to live in a town on the edge of the countryside and visit London for cultural events. The train service to London is greatly improved and, as you say, it often takes as long to cross London as it would for us to go directly to our destination from where we live. I lived in London for a while and eventually just had to visit the countryside each week, because it was too much, just like New York.

The nearby Shenfield station is less than half an hour straight in to Liverpool Street. Even if you live in a village near Brentwood or neighbouring Shenfield it's still quicker into the centre than actually living anywhere outside Zone 1. Travel may cost a bit more but the lifestyle is on a different level.

The transport crush is because the urbanised landmass of London and its continuous suburban environs is 24 million or so. If the British were not so obsessed with boundaries and actually dealt with the reality, then we'd be building a lot more metro lines by now (and we still have the largest urban rail network in the world outside Tokyo).

Here’s a tip. Draw a 40 mile radius circle around London and live just outside it. Property is much cheaper, supermarkets are cheaper, council tax is cheaper and the crimes rates are lower. Having watched all of your previous vlogs I'm sure this is only a temporary set back. Sadly you need to move to the other side of the M25 for property prices to become more realistic ( although my wife and I have no mortgage now we do pay £2800 per annum council tax ) the compromise is you have to travel further to get into town, I know this as my office is in Putney. You probably have to park by the side of the road and that's why your car is vulnerable, are there no secure parking nearby? Anyway as a number of us have been enjoying vicariously your discoveries and adventures in our metropolis I hope that you can bounce back from the downsides of living here, and take heart from the pleasure that you regularly bring to others.

1) Absolutely correct, and has been an hour for 25 years or more. 2) £1500 is not bad given where you live. 3) Rent is expensive. There are worse places. 4) The tourist spots are not all that great. Hit the City and you’re surrounded by a thousand years of history. 5) Walking slowly is fine. Just be aware of other people (though tourists never are). 6) Some bus routes are OK. But the tube is fast for distance. More people should just walk. They’d see so much more. Victoria has been mental for years. It’s a joke. I’ve let many more than three trains go because you can’t get on them. 7) There is crime everywhere. But it isn’t as bad as you’d have people believe.

You could not pay me to live in London. It was pretty cool 30-40 years ago but the crime rate(knife attack capital ), too crowded, dangerous in many parts that you have to know which are no-go-zones. It is also expensive. I traveled a lot over the years, 91 countries London went from a fave to avoid for me about 10 years ago. Actually, most of the larger cities that were tourist destinations in Europe are living off reputations created 50 years ago. Rome and Paris were special and not they are just big dirty cities with 3-5 times as many tourists at any given moment as locals and almost as many pickpockets. I moved from the US 20 years ago and very happy living away in a city with 7 million despite never being a city person except for leisure travel, and there is no neighborhood where it would be risky to walk alone at 3am. Low cost of living, about 1/10th the cost compared to California Marin where I have lived much of my adult life, and far more access to culture, museums, theater, ballet, jazz clubs, pubs, and 13,000 restaurants within walking distance. If one looks around they can find desirable living regions of the world not prohibitively expensive. Salaries might be higher in large cities like London or NYC but what they do to the human spirit is a very heavy price to pay. I never had a job however, always own businesses so my income was based on skills in building the business, not the prevailing wage rate. Good that you like it there, but find a better place to park the car. I love not having a car with really good cheap transportation that is safe, fast and clean. It is liberating to not have that responsibility and get around faster and lower cost than driving. Growing up in California meant needing a car to live, with little or no public transport and spread out suburbs with low population density.

Hampstead Heath is run by the Corporation of London, not by Camden or Islington. It is just that Labour councils believe in spending other people's money that the rates are so high. Walking along the Thames (or Regents Canal) is worthwhile - and cheap (Hampton Court to Greenwich mainly). Everything of interest (almost) is within a 10 minute walk of the river as that was the means of transport before the railways. NW11 has the lowest rate of burglary in London.

I live in a village and we get bin pickups on Tuesdays and recycling on Wednesdays. Every day must just be a London or big city thing.
@EricIrl5 жыл бұрын
There are daily collections in Brighton and Hove too.

mainly a London thing. I had my bins collected every day in London, but I lived in a very busy area. everywhere else I've lived in the UK its once a week.

Yvette the police say leave your glove box open and no loose change on view so criminals can see there’s nothing worth taking..
@simontmn2 жыл бұрын
I'd say car break ins are a UK wide problem. The police don't regard it as serious so there is no deterrence. I think violent crime against strangers is not that high here in London, except gang stabbings (muggings do happen), but property crime is high.

Sounds like your cars are being opened by people using devices that activate your wireless keys. It's pretty common, just keep your car keys wrapped in foil to prevent the radio waves.

Crikey, we get a rubbish collection once a week, alternating between recycling one week and normal rubbish the next! I think nightly bin collection is definitely a special case due to where you are and probably accounts for quite a lot of thar council tax lol

I'm definitely not going to bash NI as I've never been there, and it does look beautiful in many areas. Nor am I going to make any remarks here about the province's colourful politics or history. I just want to say, if one's attracted to NI, be forewarned that the weather is terrible: it rains 300+ days of the year. That is a big reason why the island of Ireland, as well as much of the British Isles generally, is so verdantly attractive in the first place. :)

@@nobbynobbynoob Ah - but Irish rain is different. It's soft and welcoming and if you smile, you won't even get wet. (He says as he hangs onto a lamp post as he's being buffeted by Storm Brendan).

(She says, regarding Buses) "I don't even know how you catch one" How do you catch a Bus in Australia? You wait at a Bus Stop, brainiac! And that's pretty much the same for most of the world... Apologies to International viewers. We're all not that stupid in Australia. Then she says "Bus Travel isn't a thing in Australia" She's wrong again! She obviously hasn't been outside her car congested Sydney! Major cities in Australia except where she lives with her eyes closed, have huge bus patronage. I can't watch anymore past 7 minutes. She's too much hard work. Bye

Bare in mind, all she can do is speak from her perspective, as you do from yours.
@hoxtondave96195 жыл бұрын
Of course. She's pretending bus travel doesn't exist in Australia, which isn't true - she's just too middle class to use these services. Then she immediately starts telling us about her car, in London. Most people of her age in London do not have a car. She obviously does't earn that much from KZbin, so either she's getting a bit of help or she's so averse to public transport so as to avoid it at all costs.

It may be true that nothing in life comes without work, but I find it a dubious prop that work is never easy. If life and work are a struggle, it may be because the path being pursued is the wrong path. Of course, if one continually affirms that nothing comes easy, then there is a good chance that nothing will come easy. Think twice before you tattoo yourself with a bad affirmation.

London has a population much bigger than a lot of countries. 2/3rds the population of Australia So I'm afraid there will be a perception of huge crime rates etc. You can't compare Sydney with London like for like.
