Her De Carlo’s voice is perfect. Just the right amount of weight and brass to carry it off. Kudos of course to Sondheim who wrote it for her voice. Fits like a glove.

Oh .. my ... goodness!!! I didn't know Ms De Carlo introduced this song. She's darn good!!! Elaine Stritch makes this song her clarion call but Ms De Carlo offers it as a personal testimonial. I prefer this performance. Bravo, Ms De Carlo!!!!

by God she could still belt a song with the best of 'em!! you go gurl!!
And then the best she could find was being Lily Munster, which she did brilliantly, but it was far beneath her capacity level as one can see here. Hollywood didn't and doesn't like older actresses.

A lot of famous people sang this song.. on or off Broadway or on TV or in Vegas, London , wherever.. but out of all of them Yvonne was the biggest star! As Barbra once said , "To be a star you have to be a movie star!" Name above the title, Yvonne carried her own pictures for many years. Remembered forever on TV.

Proud to say I got to see her in Follies on Broadway also thanks to Mom and Dad. Her version is indeed the best and you can still get the original cast recording. Yvonne also did her own singing in most of her films. Check out her version of Frankie and Johnny in Gal Who Took the West! It's brilliant.

I saw the original "Follies," and to hear this song for the first time is something that will stay with me forever. The great thing about De Carlo's performance was that she personified every lyric in the song because she was a genuine movie star, and you could believe she went through all the ups and downs. While others can certainly do justice to the song, they don't have the history that she had.

I'll never forget meeting her mother at Disneyland (true story) when I was a kid. She told me that she had repeatedly told Yvonne as a teenager, "Ya gotta sing and dance if you wanna make it". Must have worked.

Robert Stephen Browning You are not kidding. Lol If you don't mind how did you realize it was her mom Marie?
@stephenacs7 жыл бұрын
She noticed my sister who would have been around 14 or 15 at that time. She told her she was pretty. We were with our parents and she then launched into her daughter and the whole deal about having told her she needed to sing and dance if she wanted to be a star. She just seemed (even at my young age) as a little lonely lady who wanted to brag her her daughter. It was very sweet. It wasn't until she did Follies that my mom reminded me of the whole interchange but I do remember it. We were in a crowd and I think waiting for the parade to start
@barbarajester32447 жыл бұрын
Robert Stephen Browning What an awesome story. Thanks so much for sharing that. I read Yvonne's autobiography who talks alot about her mom Marie so very cool to hear from someone who actually met her. I'm not sure what year your story is from but my guess is that she was there with Yvonne's two boys. I'm a really big fan of Yvonne's so love hearing these stories. Thanks again.

@JJ21210 Жыл бұрын
Oh ffs. A feminist is just someone who thinks that women should have equal rights. How do you not GET that, more than 50 years after the second wave of feminism? Or, how do you not SUPPORT that idea? If you're salivating over some quote she made about wifey putting on hubby's slippers and submitting to hubby-Boss, then you're stupidly overlooking reality: She had a career; she was financially independent; she spent most of her life WITHOUT a man in her life; and when her one husband was injured, she became the sole supporter of their family for years. Phuqq you, bigot -- lots and lots. Grow up. Face modernity.
