I really enjoyed the win tonight from start to finish and thought all the players had some extra jump and enthusiasm tonight. I really enjoyed seing Valeno on the top line for once! I love his speed and agility and ability to effectively forecheck to win those important puck battles. It was really calming to have Edvinsson back from injury to stabilize the whole defense. This new coach comunicates a lot more with the players on the bench which I think is very Important.

Almost as if Todd can see a player's skill set and see how that can be used, rather than just seeing the names on paper. Veleno is decently fast and can dig the pucks out of the corners, leaving Larkin and Raymond space to maneuver.

Todd is already having an effect on the team. Kaner seemed to really like Todd’s style when asked about him in an interview. Ray, Kaner, and Cat looked great against Washington. The team had life, hopefully this is the start of something we can all get behind.

The main thing jumping out at me after watching the Washington game, is that our D didn't look completely lost out there. Gus and Petry especially looked much better. Is that the coach bump or the ability to just play hockey? Need more games, but this is definitely a better product on the ice

I'm really interested in seeing how much improvement McLellan can get out of players like Gustafsson, Holl, Copp, Tarasenko, etc. It never made sense that a player would go from good or even just serviceable to bad or invisible. I'm not expecting them to become all-stars by any means but if they can be put in position to succeed more, maybe that alone will help. I don't know how McLellan is as a coach, but I've enjoyed his press conferences so far and it seems like the players like him so far. Hope the Wings look a lot better the rest of the year, but still not win many more games.

The coaching change is great not because it will get them into the playoffs this year. We all saw Kane shaking his head while sitting on the bench this season. We all saw him coasting thru a most shifts most games. Bringing in an experienced winning coach should result in more effort out of the veterans like Kane etc... Improved play out of the veterans will result in higher trade value at the trade deadline and that is a great objective for this season. Need to clean out the roster of dead weight veterans.

I think seeing how the pieces on this team gel with McLellan is smart. Maybe wait 5-10 games to see who should go/stay in trades. Or say we get red hot, dont touch anything. Need a little wait and see before anything big.

Serious question, but why is everyone so adamant that the wings can't make the playoffs? We're 8 points out of a wild card spot which is only 4 wins. There's 46 games left.

Because of the amount of points it takes to make the playoffs, usually between 90-100. And the points percentage around 80% win rate over the remaining 47 games the team would need to get 60+ points. Not to mention the 7 teams that are between the wings and the last wildcard spot that they will be playing most games games that they would have to out pace. There's a reason odd makers give them about a 2% chance to make that last wildcard spot.

I'm even ok with the Copp-Compher thing at the moment. If you can't have a 1A-1B, could a 2A-2B get you far enough for a playoff spot. I can argue for it now even if I was a little confused when it happened. The Holl-Petry thing is typical for him in my opinion as he has a habit of over signing or over supplying the roster in some way. I don't agree with it, but it has worked out really well at times.

Agreed re Holl Max . But we so stuck with Bad Vlad . I like the guy but his game is so not there. Time will tell . That was IMO SY’s worst off season move.

As a Canadian it is extremely frustrating for them to leave elite, high draft picks off the WJC roster every year. Beckett Sennecke was 3rd overall and would be a star or one of the best players on every other teams rosters. Yakemchuk was 7th overall, I saw him play when I lived in Calgary last winter and the guy is a beast. Huge at 6'3" and he also scored 30 goals as a defenseman. He was dominant in every aspect, walking the line like a pro and quarterbacking the powerplay. Sad that Ottawa got him, hate to say it but I think he will be a really good NHLer. Also Parekh was 9th overall and extremely talented offensive defensemen who was near 100 points last year. Wonder why Canada has fails like losing to Latvia and comes 5th in the tournament, what a joke.

I’d like to see a trade for someone like a Byram (BUF), Provorov (CBJ), or Petterson (PIT). Defense is a bigger need than anything up front right now.

1:23:30 The team hasn't done funny dances coming off the ice and haven't laughed as much. If you're always miserable or meh when you play, it can hurt. You're playing a sport. If it just feels like a job and a have to, just...blah. EDIT: Also, think how the levity can help when trying to put a bad stretch behind you.

Yzerman should bring ASP and MBN over the GR after the WJC. GR is looking like a strong candidate for the Calder Cup. Add ASP, MBN and Mazur when he's back from injury, they'd hopefully win the Calder Cup!

They are under contract in SHL, for the same team, Skellefteå, who is trying to repeat as champions.

They're both on Loan to the Skellefteå.. Yzerman can do what he wants with them. ASP has already won an SHL title. ASP has shown he can be dominant vs men on the big ice surface in the (SHL). He's dominant vs his age group on the small ice surface playing in Ottawa for the WJC.. next step for his development is playing against men on the small ice surface.(AHL).. If he were to play in the AHL for the second half of the season, He would be more likely to make the NHL next year.. MBN's doing okay in the SHL, but playing style is much better suited for (NA). He's very physical and aggressive with an amazing shot.. Austin Watson could definitely mentor him. Personally I think Detroit really needs to have a winning culture again. Having most of their future winning the Calder Cup, would be massive for the franchise.

@@danb239 They're both signed with Detroit. They're loaned to Skellefteå. In 2015 William Nylander was loaned to MODO. After the WJC, the leafs put Nylander in the AHL. If they weren't signed with Detroit, then yes they would have to wait till the end of the season. But they're both under contract with Detroit, and loaned to Skellefteå..

I guess technically it is possible but I don't see Yzerman doing something like that to screw over Skellefteå. I would bet everything I have in my bank account against it.

Am I nuts or is trading Larkin not a terrible idea? Where is Larkin gonna be in his career when this team is ready to really compete? Why not find the best farm system of the current group of cup contenders and take a king's ransom. Does it set us back a couple of years? Maybe. But we've been waiting long enough. I don't think you are nuts at all - it is not a bad idea- but I think you might be underwhelmed by what he would get in return . He is not a #1 guy - he is an excellent complimentary piece - the best thing for him would be to trade him - and expedite this - but I don't expect to see that .

Lets do the math first. 36 games 32 points. To get to 92 points last 46 games need to be played at 107 point pace. Last season eight teams had 107+ points. Don´t know about u3 but in two McL matches Gustafsson was imo just what we wanted him to be. Ghost-Light. Hard to forget how atrocious he has been but he is one that benefits a lot from allowed to just play fucking hockey.
