The Superlux need a bit of break-in to sound GREAT. So either use them like normal for a while OR set them aside playing loud pink noise [ • Pink Noise for Ten Hou... ] and that will wear in the driver for 30-50 hours.Monoprice's I noticed no benefit with break in. If you are looking at headphones for gaming and can support OPEN headphones the Superlux are your babies!

I received the Superluxes a few days ago and I found out some tricks to fix the issues that you were talking about (which I actually experienced myself): To get the new pads on, simply flip around the surrounding thingy that goes around the earcup (I don't know what it's called) so it faces the inside of the pad, place the pad onto the cup and flip it back around. To get rid of the harsh high-end, use the driver covers (the foam thingies that go under the pads) that come with most replacement pads. I even found a use for the shitty pads that came with the cans, I use them as palm rests with my keyboard haha

Nice tricks! I also tried with and without the driver covers that came with the device, which definitely makes them way more enjoyable (not so harsh high end). I'm using them mostly as guitar practice headphones, and this works great :)

I own one for 10 years. I'm using it right now (with the spare velour pads that came with the 661 EVO from my brother. I took your advice at time and replaced for the velour because the differece is night and day). I watched this and many other videos of this channel at time. Thank you for these reviews, very informative.

I bought Superlux 688B's back in late 2013 for $39. I used them as daily drivers, traveled with them clipped to my backpack, wasn't particularly soft on them, and in early 2017 the left driver quit working. Nearly 3.5 years of HEAVY use on a pair of $40 headphones. Best value I have EVER gotten out of anything I think I have ever purchased. Seriously, if you need some headphones and you do not have much money to spend..don't hesitate.

Recently, my 20 year old Grado sr60's gave up the ghost. Feeling really crappy and being a fan of your channel I needed a new pair of headphones. Knowing I would be using them daily, I didn't mind spending the money, but your review of the Superlux 668B's got the better of my curiosity. Today is my first day with them and right out of the box, these $35 headphones are great and my ears are happy again. I want to thank you for your review on them and keep up the great reviews! By the way....you are right about the pads. After about 10 minutes with them on, I went to ebay and ordered upgrades.

I'm impressed with my the sound on my SUPERLUX 668B, especially for gaming. I'm using a cheaper $10 Cosmos Velvet pads with the stock foam instead of what came with the pads. Sometimes I take them off, thinking that I must have accidentally left my speakers on, because there's no way I'm getting this spatial quality from a $35 pair of headphones. Compared to everybody's "The best $50 gaming headsetz evarrr", it's not even comparable how much better these sound. I was a little worried getting a 56 ohm headset compared to typical 16-30 ohm gamar geer, but haven't had any problem driving these without a headphone amp. One thing worth noting, when I took off the pads, there's a sticker on the grille with a little note saying something like "This sticker is super important to the sound quality, never remove this sticker". One of those stickers was in the wrong place, and I don't just mean that they weren't symmetrical (both sides are clearly the same part that has been rotated instead of mirrored). The stupid cheap sticker wasn't covering all the holes in the grille that it was supposed to be covering. So make sure the stickers were put in the right place, it's not hard to move it back into the right position. That sticker may be the cheapest thing ever, but that is some actual tuning effort. Some engineer actually spent the time to sit down to figure out that these cheap monitors sound better with a sticker on the grille than without it - and that it's important enough to warn people to leave it on.

Oh man I installed those velour pads and they completely ELIMINATED the bass on my 668b's and made the vocals sound hollow and washed out, I hated it and instantly switched back to the stock pads, good thing I have long hair as a barrier against these things, but the Hifiman pads weren't that comfortable either IMO.

The problem with the Superlux pads is that they the foam is squishy fine, but the pleather itself is so ridiculously stiff, and when you combine that with the massive clamping pressure, it gets painful to wear them if you wear glasses (or even sometimes without glasses too)

Looking for some feedback to decide between a Superlux 668B, probably with some replacement cups, or a Sennheiser HD 558. I primarily want them for gaming, but also some music and movie use. They would be my primary (and probably only) headphones for the foreseeable future. Would they be of comparable sound quality and comfort or is it definitely worth paying double for the 558s?

I've had a pair of the 668bs for a while and just got some cheap velvet pads in the mail for them, and i'm not a very happy camper! The high end is way more noticeably sibilant and piercing with the new pads. The low end is still alright but still slightly worse. Did i go wrong with getting the cheap chinese velvet pads because the quality of the fabric makes a big deal?

So i've been looking around for some new headphones lately and i came with the superlux 668B's and the ath ad500x's. I'm European and a student so i don't have hundreds of euros to spend (especially because products that americans have on amazon are like 50 euros more expensive in Europe) the superlux's are about 30 euros and i can get the 500x's for about 150 euros.... i want to use these for gaming so i'm also getting a microphone for about 30 euros with it. Do you think it's worth the extra 120 euros to buy the 500x's or are the 668B's so amazing i won't notice much difference? Oh and btw, would you actually reccomend the 668B's for gaming?

As someone who owns both pairs of headphones, the 668B's have the better sound stage, but the ATH AD500X's are in every other way better (the sound stage is still good on the 500X's). You get what you pay for in this case.

All right. Very cool analysis and conclusion man. I'm a fan of semi-open headsets anyway. I will go along your recommendations and go for the mod. Superlux even if it takes some time for the pads from the US (I live in France). Context of use : mobile Lumia 830 specs. Mp3/Wma/Wma Pro/AAC and third application App. for FLAC. Mostly used "on the go" so I'll need to hear a bit of my surrounding by precaution. Thus, all in all, the Lumia 830 audio chip handles : 16 bits / 48 kHz / 768 kbits for Music. Notes : - From Head-Fi the Lumia 830 is powerful enough to drive "difficult" headsets. - Music Apps - Xbox Music/MixRadio from Nokia - both have 16 equalizer presets + 1 personalized (so tunning the Superlux shouldn't be too hard) By the way I do subscribe . Keep up the excellent work :) Rgds

In case you're planning on using the Monoprice 8323 for more than a year, be informed the stock pads aren't going to last as long. I've had my cans for just about a year now and the pleather is so hard and cracked that I went and bought new headphones (a Sennheiser HD439; great headphones btw).

Replacing HD668B stock pads with HIFIMAN velour pads increased soundstage drastically, but now after a year or so I changed them back and realized how bad bass became with velour pads. But the overall sound is surprisingly comparable with sennheiser hd 380 (which cost 3-4 times more).

I don't understand why amazon doesn't have more pads compatible with the Superlux 668B form factor. I went with those Cosmos ® 1 to find them better than the stock, but still not especially comfortable. The link to your recommended earpads for them now redirects to another site. VelPad for HE400S are available, but "Velour Earpads" are out of stock as I type this. What's the difference between those amazon $5 Cosmos vs your linked $10 Velour Earpads vs the $15 VelPad? I can see the difference with the Vel, but the Cosmos listing on amazon that I already use might be identical to the linked "Velour Earpads".

The Hilo623 Would the Hifiman Velour earpads feel more comfortable than the Cosmo earpads I got off Amazon earlier this year? If they'd be the same I wouldn't want to get them. The $5 listed earpads below feel coarse and uncomfortable compared to HD 598 pads. It's like Amazon only has poor options for that large doughnut earpad size. These are the ones I have now : www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KLPRQMO Would these Hifiman pads below be the same ones featured in your video? I have the Superlux 681 Evo and I'm pretty happy with them. I have to mention that after about 10 months of use one of the cups died. However, it was just a wire that had to be resoldered. They were still under warranty so they fixed them no problem. It wouldn't be too expensive to fix if it happens again. They are easy to pull apart and you could do it ourself if you know soldering. As for the comfort, I have to admit the pads are not the best - neither the pleather ones nor the velour ones. Could someone recommend replacements pads? Preferably something I could buy from Amaozn.

Im deciding between getting passive bookshelves or active studio monitors for my desk. is there a size i should not go past? also a guy in an audio store i walked in said bookshelves should not be used in the nearfield, because you lose your stereo, is this just bollocks? I sit at about 1 to 1.5 meters away from the monitors. I live in europe so micca isnt really an option for me but i was looking at either the q acoustics 2020i or 2010i? Thanks for the help.

+WolfElemental I would jokingly say "Carefully" but since you have already damaged one I have to get serious. You need to stretch the vinyl out on the hifimans first. It is flat and you need to stretch it for 3-4 minutes into a cylinder. Go easy, go slow. Work it open. Then you get that first third over the headphone and wiggle down the sides to get the rest on.

Hey Z Reviews, not sure you will see this but I'll ask anyway. I got a pair of the superlux this week as my first real pair of headphones. My initial reaction was underwhelming, I find they are really weak bass wise (tried to drive them with some RATM but it was really meh :(, quiet as hell (like on my ipod max volume is not enough), and overall a sidegrade if anything compared to my cheap seinheiser earbuds. Do I need to EQ them on all my devices ? Also do I need a preamp or something to actually drive them ? The only thing I actually like them for so far is gaming. I was kinda expending to be blown away like how I was playing on a 4k gaming rig for the first time, but as I say, being totally unbias I feel like they sound poor ? Not sure If I'm not using them to their potential though ?

I wouldn't consider the superlux's to be a "real" pair of headphones. Even as a first. If your first reaction was not enough bass, you need to go for something else with more bass, or something with good enough tradeoffs, that even with less bass, the other factors make it good.

i own both. vastly prefer the shp9500--the comfort is worlds apart and they are much better for long gaming sessions. the audio levels are pretty similar on both, generally flat with a slight boost in treble. there's slightly more bass in the 9500s but if you're a bass-head neither of these headphones are going to be very satisfying for you. if bass is what you're after i'd go for the hyperx clouds instead.
